I BOUGHT THE WORST MARANTZ ON EBAY

Ғылым және технология

Need tools? Here's a video showing what I use (with links!): • Must-Have Tools For Wo...
You might not be able to tell from this video, but this is indeed a Marantz 2230 Stereophonic Receiver. It is quite broken, and it is the most disgusting and dirty receiver I've ever seen. I am happy to report it at least does not smell bad!
I will be restoring this receiver, so please consider subscribing if you want to see the progress. Thanks for watching!

Pretty impressive! Never seen one like that, lol! What's amazing is that it WORKS! A testament to these old units? Love these vintage pieces, have a ton of them around the house. An old Pioneer SX-3900, a Technics SA-5570, a Fisher RS-2007, Marantz 2265, Pioneer SX-838, Yamaha CR 800, and more! Probably more than I need, but I'm a sucker for the silver faces, lol!

Man, I remember what a revelation FM stereo was on those units. We were accustomed to tinny AM pocket and car radios. Then there emerged FM, and on a Marantz or other quality receiver it was ‘dark’ yet beautifully clear. And with the flywheel tuner, the process of tuning in your fave stations was almost mystical. And you’d play it through these gargantuan wood speakers, and whether classical or jazz or rock were your thing they all sounded great at all volume levels. And there were FM DJs who played whole album sides from Coltrane or Pink Floyd or whatever other mind-blowing thing turned you on.

Worked on a couple of Marantz receivers in the last few years. A 2275, and very dirty 2238B, which was very nice once cleaned. Given to me free by a friend who had it stored in his garage since it quit working. I wish people would store these indoors away from insects, rodents, dirt, dust, and dampness.

I bought a Marantz 2270 new from Soundex Electronics in Willow Grove, PA back in the 70's and loved it. I'm pretty sure that Marantz had an optional wood case (lid) that you could purchase at the time.

  • @williamsampson4926

As an audio repair guy for years I'd say this is probably better as a parts machine depending what is wrong with it. You'll need one for all the cosmetic parts anyway. You can figure out what is the best main chassis to start with once you get the parts thing. People are charging stupid price for parts machines also. I could fix most any of these things but you need a complete one to start with lol

  • @incipfer

I just bought a Marantz 2230 myself and until you showed that terrible faux wood grain metal cover I thought someone vinyl coated the one I have. I've never seen one without the actual wood case that could be ordered separately. The one I have has the power switch replaced with a toggle switch, which I believe you probably answered the why part. I've been told if you replace the factory Marantz power switch, install a power snubber capacitor circuit and while I am not familiar I guess it has something to do with that DC Voltage issue at turn on.

It´s the first time I see one of your videos, and; man!!!! the sound of the camera is really amazing, I mean, the frequency range of those mics are impressive. By the way, the output DC becomes of a shorted output transistor, I' don't know your skills with electronics, but thats an easy fix (with good original or close as possible spare parts).

I'm 95% sure the main amp 27 volts on the output problem is the output capacitor. 2200UF at 63 volts. It has to be shorted. Replace both when you do this. This looks like a unit was bought to fix another that the shop could not get parts for, or they made an error and got a replacement junker for parts for another customer. That dirt build up could be part of the problem, but doubt the high output voltage.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but measuring DC offset on a capacitor coupled output without a load is pretty meaningless. You wouldn’t necessarily expect 0 volts without a load to charge the capacitor, no? Connect a speaker or an 8 ohm resistor, then measure and it should be at zero. In short, the capacitor won’t do its job of filtering DC voltage unless you put resistance on it. At least it’s that way on my 2230. Or am I full of crap? Not sure where you ended up with this.
