Hey want to sell it , I have a 2240B. They are a thing of beauty

Ok, I'm new at this and what a challenge. I was a computer programmer for 40 years and making mistakes i'm used to. But these mistakes are frustrating. I appreciate your helpful discussions on how to trouble shoot. That test you did by taping the power board is exactly what i did to find out why my receiver was not fully turning on. I found that when i took the large filter capacitor off it had a ton of glue. I knew i would have to be careful pulling it off and it took some time and by extracting it the board cracked in at least 3 places. I would tap on it and it would sound on and off. It was not to easy of a fix but i was able to solder those joints back in place. Your helpful hints is most appreciated. Please do some more when you have time and thanks again.

You have a great vintage receiver. Congrats!

I hope someday Marantz would produce a retro model similar to this one for the mass consumer market. (with some updated features like bluetooth, remote, updated speaker ports.)

Marantz had a Big Mfg. in Chatsworth that I use to drive past daily back in the 1970's back when they were made in USA. I should have been a Elec. Engineer and bought this elec testing equip. Your living my dream.

Thanks for sharing. How cool is that, you remember the Marantz factory in the states. I knew most of the Japanese companies set up on the west coast, of coarse that makes sense. This is the first comment that I've heard about someone remembering a factory here in the USA. Thank you again.

I bought one of these in 1973...Sold it to a friend, who recently had it restored for 500 bucks. And it's working great! Wish I had kept it....

They sure did. So many different manufacturers and so many different models that were engineered/built to last.

Also, you and a couple other KZread channels have given me the push to jump back into electronics. I've started setting up my electronics bench and picked up a couple pieces of stereo equipment for very cheap. I got a Teac Stereo Receiver Model #RX6010VBK and a Teac Reel to Reel A-1500 deck for $20. I'm looking at a pair of Bose 301 Series III speakers that need one of the tweeters replaced. (He wants $40, does that sound about right?) I think I'm going to finally have that stereo system that I wanted when I was 20 about 40 years later. LOL Happy New Year!!!

Very cool! You got some descent gear on the cheap. Good Job! It's a fun hobby and it doesn't need to be expensive. As you get more experience working on the equipment you'll get up to speed pretty quickly. Just like everything in life, experience means so much. Happy New Year to you also and a great 2020.

Sweet. Dad bought one of these in the early 70s that we kids used until we left home. I have it now and did not realize until recently just what a gem I have.

I just love the vintage equipment, I guess you can tell. It's much harder to find deals now a days because of supply and demand. Add to that everybody thinks that their equipment is worth a gold mine because they saw on eBay that someone is "asking" $10,000. Then you see what they "sell" for it's $300. Anyways because of a combination of reasons most of the really good deals are gone. Your 2230 is a great little receiver. All of the vintage Marantz equipment is good stuff and was made to last. Happy New Year to you also and have a great 2020!

We, at Marantz in the 70s, rated full power at 20-20k so 90 in mid freqs is normal. The 2270 was so popular and so good that he we "secretly" produced it for a year after it's replacement was introduced. In fact only Marantz and Mac rated conservatively, not really any others. We ran public "clinics" to prove our specs and the deceptions of the competition.

I had a Dynaco PAT-4 & Stereo 120, then a Marantz 2270 and finally a Pioneer SX-1980 (the beast).

You want to know what getting old and forgetful is really like? I had my 2270 from 1973 up until 15-25 years ago. It was still my main amp but was beginning to be edged out by surround sound processors and the like. Then it went into the box which I still had. Now I can't find it or remember where I put it or who I may have loaned it out to. Now, I'm forever doomed to browse these videos and walk around cursed all day. DAMM! Getting old is not for the young.

I bought a mint untouched 2270 with wood case 12 years ago for $175! Insane but understandable why these are skyrocketing in price. My Marantz 4300 monster is the heart of the audio setup.My 2325 unfortunately is in disrepair. Finding a tech I trust is a challenge in 2021.Any suggestions?

bought one in CA from pacific stereo used components dept,300 buck$,( 312 w tax) worked nice no,,worked perfectly for a few months,,,then dropouts one ch or the other periodically,I removed the heavy dog from the chassis,then all face panel knobs to expose the pots,,radio shack tuner cleaner on the balance control,tone controls, volume pot too,,that cleaned up the problem,nice soubd fir 5 years ,It eventually needed bench repair,brought it into pacific stereo repair in chgo,,, got heavy involved in renting some properties,hands on repair like quickquick a lot of work,,I got caught up,,,,,found that pacific was bankrupt and closed,,my unit gone,,shee ittt, someone out there has my beloved marantz somewhere over the rainbow,,I do remember you had to make very neat speaker wire end strip cuts so they do not touch each other,the unit did not have quick burn fuses so that a short would not smoke the whole unit,be very careful not to short speaker connections

My dad has the same unit! It needs new electrolytics, and the velum paper needs a refresh. Also, the channels seem to drop in and out while set to lower volumes. Thinking maybe the relays need changing as well.

I watch a lot of your videos and they are very informative and helpful. I would like to ask you a question. Is there any seller you would recommend for a rebuild kit for the Marantz 2270? Maybe you would have a rebuilt list of parts for the 2270? Thanks for any information and thanks for your videos. Brantly

Hi, thanks for watching the videos. I've never purchased a kit from anyone so I can't say which ones are good. What I can say is if you purchase from eBay you can check their feedback rating. If it's good then you will probably be all set. I don't use build lists as I have almost all of the parts in stock. I just start a project and use the parts I already have.

Main reason why I am interested in a vintage Marantz is the Loudness button.

My 2250B is missing those main in pre out jumpers, yet it is just playng normal. Do I miss something here?

Wish I had more room for more equipment. Are you getting to the point you need to start thinning out? I can imagine it's tough to know what to let go.

Man, I've been beyond the point for years. I've slowed up obtaining equipment because it's gotten pretty expensive over the past few years. That's takes some of the pressure off because I really don't have mega bucks tied up in the equipment. For example, I purchased my Pioneer SX-1980 and SX-1250 in 2006, including the original boxes and owners manuals for $700. For both of them!!! I remember even thinking about it then, should I pay that much? Crazy huh? In 2006 I had to think about a deal like that, in 2020 I can almost get my $700 back for just the boxes and owners manuals. So I have a lot of equipment but much of it I obtained before the prices went through the roof.

Bought my 2270 new in 1976 for $300. Has some problems but the amp is still kicking butt. If you run into the tuner dial sticking, clean the top metal slide bar well and slightly lube it. Also had to replace some burned out lamps. Think my FM tuner is gone but I don't use that anymore because the stations aren't what they used to be. My remote speaker switch burned up and is frozen but I never used it anyway. Sounds like poo poo with 4 speakers anyway unless you want to listen to 2 speakers in another room. Getting to the pots to clean easily is a tight op. Using an alcohol only based cleaner usually evaporates before penetrating the casing. Hate to use a residue base with a different type cleaner. I would like to restore mine but my health is too poor to even sit at a bench for a short period of time. It's a collectors item and I would like to hand it to someone who would want to refurbish it to mint cond like the one you demonstrated to an interested party. But I would like to see the results too..... I would have like to have seen that test throughout the audio band and not just at 1kc. It has great bottom end amplification too. I hate letting it go and not sure if I'm ready for that. I did have an offer about 15 years ago from another very interested younger (than me)Tech but just couldn't. It's like saying goodbye to a good old faithful friend and the memories throughout the years along with the pleasure it gave me.

Hi Chris I tried to send you an email but it keeps Bouncing back ? So ill ask you on here hope thats ok. Iv got a 2270 which i love but the Stereo light doest work i did have an engineer look at it and he said and i quote:- there is a slight problem with the FM section the tuning meter is slightly off this is due to a very involved problem in what is called the FM I.F amp/detector stage which i cannot resolve. Also i will have to double check that the stereo lamp is faulty as the mentioned FM problem may affect the stereo decoder which drives the Lamp. ?? Is that correct ?? Thanks again G

I bought my Sansui 2000 new in '69. Lost one channel about 10 years back and put the receiver on the shelf. Now I'd like to get it going again but don't know if it would be worth it. Who knows when a diode/capacitor/transistor is going to quit? What do you think?

With the vintage audio equipment if you can work on it yourself it's a big advantage. The labor is the big cost most of the time. The parts are available(most of them) and inexpensive. If you need to have someone else take a look at it then it's going to be more expensive.

if you want one of these beauties.....don't wait....there only going up in price!!

@@vintageaudioaddict I'm on my way to restore many of my own Marantz receiver collection and I have two of 2270 that still waiting to be recapped. Maybe there are some hints or obstacle that very challenging that we should pay more attention? Thanks a lot for sharing.

Don't forget, the 70 watts is with both channels driven from 20 Hertz to 20,000 Hertz into an 8 ohm load. In your test I believe you were using a 1 kilohertz tone. Have you tried the low and high end of the audio spectrum? That being said, marantz was still conservative in their power rating system, and you will probably get close to 78 to 80 Watts before exceeding the THD

I fully test the units. I just don't think most people watching here want to see full spectrum sweeps etc. and spending a lot of time with that on the video. From the feedback I'm receiving most no matter their age want to remember when they, their Father's or Grandfather's and this equipment were part of their life's.

@@vintageaudioaddict thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I didn't mean to come off as critical. It was more for the layperson who might not understand why the conservative power rating. You and I grew up in the same era where low to mid-range quality audio manufacturers used EIA, IHF, peak music power, 1 KHz tone, non-published high THD's in order to sell their crappy ware. These beautiful pieces of equipment that you've acquired over the years fully deserve their place in the upper echelon of history. I've only just discovered your Channel, and this persnickety old fart just felt that if Saul Marantz was here, he would have said "show THD at 20 Hz, 1 KHz, and 20 KHz or at the very least explain why real world testing parameters are used". I am so looking forward to viewing all the videos you have posted. So far, I've looked at your Sony Elcaset video and I remember where I was ( Tip Top Sound, local Stereo shop) when I saw the same one in your video sitting on the shelf, brand new, playing at 3 & 3/4 inches per second, and saying to myself "I gotta get me one of these"! Well, I never did, but YOU did. The closest I've got is a Sony TC K5 cassette deck that I bought at a garage sale in 1985 for $75 and put $150 into a new motor and counter belt (still works great). So you are now my go-to guy for seeing what's under the cover of all these beautiful old gems and seeing what makes them tick.

What about the 2325? It benches way higher than the 125wpc

Do you have a shop? Where are you located.

In your opinion is this the best vintage amplifier? I'm not real familiar with them, but I want a top notch sounding unit.

Marantz are probably the best looking receivers around and sound pretty good....but soundwise, vintage Sansui was and still is the best. And don't get roped into the WPC B.S.. Many of the lower watts Sansuis sound friggin amazing. For example, the 50wpc G-4700 and the 25wpc Qrx-6001. These are two AMAZING sounding receivers (the qrx is warmer and generally what you're looking for when searching for the "vintage" sound). I've had/have both and everybody who hears them try to buy them off me. Just make sure you have some decent speakers, too. 👌

But . It mean it can give those 96w on the long run? . Maybe there is thermal concerns

I had a 2216B in my childhood and I cannot tell you how many times I pinched my finger in that tuning wheel. That is not the best design in my opinion. Yes a cool looking receiver and it brings back some good memories, but now people are more distracted with other things such as computers, smartphones, the economy....

Expensive receiver. People want $500 for broken ones

Yes, they are pretty expensive. The vintage audio equipment in general keeps going up.

The difference between 70 watts and 100 watts is not much to our ears, a little over 1 dB which many people can barely detect. So for you to make a "big deal" about a 70 watt per channel receiver being able to output close to 100 watts per channel is not that big a deal to people that understand SPL. Also, I wonder why Marantz didn't use similar equipment as you are using, and try many different test frequencies and check how many watts before it goes above 0.3% distortion, and take some type of a fair average. Also, why not double rate it such as less than 0.3% distortion at 70 wpc and less than 1% distortion at 100 wpc? Some people don't mind a little distortion to get those "extra" watts, especially if they have inefficient speakers (which may be very accurate though).

Would i trade my 2325 for the 2270? Never

you'd better be selective when using 'ever'. which one is the best 'ever'?

The older Fisher's of the 60's were way better.

Interesting that I have had a lot of experience with the 2270 and find it to be one of the worst I have heard. Before the hate comes out this is just MY opinion.

Maybe listen to one that’s up to par . I’m very critical with my equipment. Having several pieces my restored 2270 is one if not my favorite daily driver . Outstanding sound
