I Bought The Cheapest Supercharged Alpina B7 In The World - Project Chicago: Part 1

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I bought a giant check engine light! That's right, finally Alpina on the channel. And not just any Alpina, it's the notoriously "reliable" E65 B7 with the N62 V8 engine. As you'd expect, it's quite broken and in need of TLC. Join me while we take delivery and inspect this 2-ton luxury rocket.

Same with my friend who has been *flooring* his turbocharged car the same minute he started it, and it's been running fine for years. But I guess you wouldn't believe that, I think you'd find more satisfying to keep regurgitating the myth that was popularized by people like you who don't know what they're talking about but they feel it's OK to insult people who won't buy their BS.

Especially since the delivery guy has no information on the history of the car. The engine oil could have been 5 years old. There could've been a bad head gasket, with oil/water mixed. Hey im a e65 specialist and know your problem by looking at the symptoms. Your eccentric shaft (valvetronic) has been worn out on both sides/engine banks as your throttle input is in fact the valvetronic motor turning this eccentric shaft pushing in or out the intermediate levers onto the valves creating variable valve adjustment. So everytime someone puts its foot on the pedal this eccentric shaft will be adjusted to the gas pedals electric position. These eccentric shafts wear out due to delayed oil service intervals. Replace the eccentric shafts on both sides with new needles from bmw and also the intermediate levers. The engine is starting rough because of a possible misfire due to one of the intermediate levers failing to make contact with the counter part in the valvetronic assembly. You can fix it temporarily by unplugging the mass airflow sensor near the right upper side of the radiator. When its unplugged the engine will run in safety mode and pushing all the valvetronic levers always 100% open/up instead of 0% closed. Then it wont misfire.

Some helpful E65 pointers! When you are changing the headlights, be sure to change the angel eye LED bulbs at that point if you plan on upgrading them to the more modern white LEDs, as the angel eye bulb is located on the underside of the headlight unit and requires the entire headlight to be removed along with the front bumper. In regards to your interior heat, whilst the blower motors can fail, so can just the resistor pack attached to it which is a seperate part. If you are getting heat but no real fan speed, the other culprit can be the HVAC control panel which requires replacement. As you have the rear sunshade, be sure to choose the HVAC controls with the same part number as what comes out (as there is some bizarre difference). You have the chrome lined door handles, which means you have comfort access. These handles are notorious for failing, which can also result in a battery drain. It's unusual to see them all sticking like that, possibly from lack of use or maybe Texas heat. The door handles come out relatively easily without having to remove the door cards, but you need long tools to unhook the handle latch system through the access port on the side of the door (theres a few videos on it). You may find greasing them up frees them up. In regards to the comfort access, if you find it is not working on any door, you may have frayed cables in each handle which can be soldered back together. If the touch sensitive strips have failed, there is no repairing them. Last time I checked, the comfort accesss handles are upwards of €700 a handle, so you could be better off doing a comfort access delete. In regards to what you mentioned about the exhaust vacuum valve, i would leave it be. The valve reduces noise at lower rpms; sticking that valve open the whole time will induce a drone noise into the cabin which grows tiresome. The CD changers in E65 models fail all the time, pull it out and replace it with a Dension Gateway, it gives USB/Ipod/Bluetooth/AUX. If you press and hold the driver window shade button, all shades activate at the same time. Whilst you saw no blue smoke, be constantly on the lookout for it whilst driving or on longer journeys. It may not have shown in your idle test, but it might show under different driving conditions. Do NOT use BMW stem seals, use Elring. I used the Bimmerpipe valley pipe, 5 years on and still going strong. Good luck!

Yeah, the point is - don't use BMW valley pipe. There are better solutions already, that doesn't require you to tear the whole engine - instead you cut off the original pipe and replace it with a extendable one. Way easier, way cheaper - same effect.

Streten, in that bulletin they say you have to change ALL FOUR camshaft position sensors and the crank position sensors and reset adaptations. Now there is an update to that bulletin for how you reset the adaptions. In insta, it’s something with resetting the oil life counter on that. But it’s only in the UPDATED version of that bulletin you referenced. The only reason why I cannot stress doing all of those sensors and resetting adaptions is I almost put an engine in a customer car I was trying to diagnose for this EXACT issue. I checked timing, I checked the motors, I did everything. Car ran great too. But it would throw those faults and a fault for timing being a tooth off. I did all four camshaft sensors and the crank, did the adaptions reset and it was perfect. If I had work tomorrow I’d get you the updated bulletin number for that one you were following but follow that before you rip those valve covers off. They are a MAJOR pain in the fucking ass.

I have a story about the E65 Gear Selector: In 2009 I was working as a Technician at a BMW Dealership. Another Technician a few bays down from me had just replaced a Brake Booster/Hydroboost unit on an E65. Something went wrong, and the car had no brakes, or hardly any. He pulled the little dongle-shifter into drive, and the car smashed into his Snap-On tool box. He then accidentally got it into reverse (this is where it gets interesting) and backed over the lift arms, crossed the shop and smashed a Drinking Fountain next to the parts department.

Have fun with the valve cover gaskets, really tight job atleast on the 5 and 6 series. I had the integrated power module go bad on my 545i, it had a bad solderings inside. Also noticed when i had the 545i that the n62 is also very picky about oil quality and right viscosity. I had lots of issues with valvetronic and random misfires at first, then changed oil grade and viscosity to manuafacturer specific, fixed all vacuum leaks, pcv diaphrams and set minimum valve lift back to the original with ista. The coolant pipe is quite easy to change just remove wiring and intake and there is lots of space to install the collapsable coolant pipe.

Clogged oil feed lines for the eccentric shafts cause pre-mature wear on the shafts. Best way is to inspect the shafts for "grooving" where the intermediate levers make contact and the most typical spot is when the shafts are in idle position. But you have probably already researched that :P But good luck and love the videos :)

Great car! Be careful with the CD magazine drawer. Just eject the magazine with the little square button that you will see if you look carefully inside and then remove it fully and then push it back in until it grabs it and pulls it in and then wait for quite a while while it reads all the discs or checks that the magazine is empty and then after all that, the the door/flap will close by itself. Be very patient ...
