I think the reason why there was no play or highscore data is that most arcade games don't keep save data after they're turned off or unplugged. Like I know at least most older arcade machines once you unplugged the console it would lose it's highscores

By the time of the Naomi, that had pretty much stopped. What would the point of all those bookkeeping screens be if you had to check them every single day because they'll get wiped when you turn the machine off?

  • @alfo2804

It's probably because it was held in battery-backed SRAM, and that only works for as long as the little button battery lasts. Once the battery is dead, the data will be wiped when the power is turned off.

I believe a lot of arcade games were just kept on 24/7, though I'd still expect the Naomi to store bookkeeping data/high scores in some sort of non-volitaile storage, likely on the cartridge itself

The reason you're seeing issues with the graphics and issues getting the system to load is likely dirty and improper contacts. Take some compressed air and clean the contacts on the MB and the cartridge, or use a QTip and some isopropyl alcohol to clean them. Then, the cartridge is actually meant to be held to the MB with screws. I don't know what size they are, but screwing the cartridge in will help it make better contact with the MB and might help some of the weird issues.

In the US the Commodore 64 uses that plug for video out for example, or any synthesizer with MIDI capabilities. Meanwhile for AV we used SCART (which stands for Syndicat des Constructeurs d'Appareils Radiorécepteurs - Syndicate of Manufacturers of Radio Receivers) - a french standard, that supports RGB right out of the box. Fun Fact: The Chorus Kids from Rhythm Heaven were actually going to be in Super Smash Bros during the 3DS/Wii U days. However they were ultimately removed from planning because Sakurai didn't know how he could implement timing/rhythm based moves into a character's standard moveset. (Donkey Kong's final smash in SSB4 is different because its a final smash and not a standard move) A lot of people theorize that Incineroar was added because his side b was made as a template for the Smash team to test what a timing-based move in Smash would look like, to see if Chorus Kids could be a valid addition to a future Smash game (if there ever is another one)

I believe Online Play and Lag also started to mainly catch up for Smash 3DS/Wii U too, which would ultimately mess up not only Rhythm based Movesets, but most likely in Rhythm Heaven's case, a Rhythm based moveset relying on audio cues, as Sakurai likes to stay as true to a character's origins as much as possible. You just need to sync your monitor and the video will display correctly. When the monitor was initialized, it wasn't being fed the game's video signal. Just the video signal from the console. So, your monitor didn't know what to do when the signal changed. Different monitors might call it different things, but there's a setting in the monitor's menu to resync and it will make the game take the full screen like it's supposed to.
