I bought an old planer/thicknesser (Kity 636), should you? (+ how to change/set the blades)

In this video I go through the process of buying an old planer/thicknesser, things to consider, setting it up (including how to change the blades and change between modes) and finally milling some warped wood into usable boards
Many thanks to Dean at Woodwork Journey for helping with the blade change process!
Let me know if you have any questions! this video should help to answer the following:
- Should I buy a vintage planer / thicknesser (Jointer)
- How to set the blades on a planer thicknesser (or jointer)
- things to consider when buying a planer/thicknesser
- How to look really cool
- how to mill wood using a planer / thicknesser
Thanks for watching! #build #woodworking #diy #woodworkingworkshop #planer #jointer

    Fantastic! I’m really pleased you got it working and are enjoying it! The pain in the bum is when you come back to that nice piece of wood a few days later and the tension release has made it cup again LOL

    Thank you mate, I’d still be messing around with those blades without those forums haha 😂 this actually did happen to the wood in the video, though it’s the cheapest stuff from B&Q so I’m not sure I’ll ever get it perfect haha

    Thank you very much! It’s the first video I have decided to talk in the clips rather than voicing over - certainly feels awkward, I figured it’s something that will feel more natural the more I do it!

    Awesome looking bit of kit. I would love a jointer to add to the collection but as you’ve said they are really expensive for a decent new one. I might have to keep more of a look out for a second hand one. Great video though and really opens your eyes to what’s out there.

    Thank you! It’s a game of patience but they do crop up, and having spent some time with it I do understand why people say they don’t build them like they used to! It’s a solid thing haha

    You will probably find the green safety guard/ chip shoot, will need to fit under the table and connect with a micro safety switch, to allow it switch on, Look on line for a pdf manual and print it out

    Oh that would be helpful, the guy mentioned that the switch issue may be due to a safety feature but he couldn’t remember what, I will try and see if I can figure that out, thank you!

    nice video. did you manage to set up any sort of dust collection to it ? i have the same machine and the only issue i have with it is too much dust allover the place

  • @thornedesignco

    @thornedesignco

    In my latest video you can see the absolute chaos this machine causes with dust/chips… I think it needs a custom 3D printed collection chute for the top, or I could crudely put together something out of wood. I need to get a bigger collection system as I don’t think the shop vac could cope haha! Let me know if you find a solution at all as I would be keen to copy!

    I can't figure out how to move the belt from one bit to another it's just being stored at the mo not in use still getting up to speed. Someone said theirs a guy in Liverpool who restores kitty machines and parts. Apparently shepache is the current brand IE used to be kity

    I’m yet to try to change the speed, thankfully it’s current setting has done the job - will make a video if I figure it out 😂

    Just swing up the round cover plate on the far side, or right as you stand when surface planing. Disengage the rollers with the lever you discovered and lift the small drive belt over the top pulley to change the speed.@@thornedesignco Hope this makes sense!

    Ill try again! I am so glad I found your channel, and this vid. I am currently in a similar set up to you, single car garage, and was about to buy the Titan model, but after seeing this video, I might wait and see if I come across a older used machine. What part of UK you live? I only ask as there is a place near where I live called Thorne :)

    I only realised that there was a place called Thorne the other day haha! I am midlands, so actually pretty well located to drive most places - but even still it took me a while to find one 😅 I’ve actually seen a lot come up recently, I think around the festive period lots of people sell tools, so now is the time to keep your eye out! With the tools I have purchased second hand, I usually find the older they are, the more substantial and higher quality (although I noticed from several forums I read that this definitely doesn’t universally apply!) I’ve used this a fair bit since recording the video and it’s been great, let me know how you get on with it!

    I have this exact machine - do you find that the thicknesser leaves a slight pattern every few mm ? Looks almost wavey if you hold it up to the light. I have new blades on it

  • @thornedesignco

    @thornedesignco

    Yes! I thought this may be to do with inconsistent height setting between the two blades, but thankfully after a few passes with the sander they come out :)

    @@thornedesignco glad to know it's not just me! I wish the out feed roller was rubber coated too as I've had a few times where the wood slips as the blades pull it back. But other than that it's a decent machine

  • @thornedesignco

    Ah haven’t had any wood slip yet, though I did get a whacky ‘wave’ going through today, I think I may have set it to take off too much in one pass…
