The war ended in February 2008. I got the HD DVD add on for Xbox 360 and then a Toshiba HD DVD player a few years before, they both worked great. The Toshiba player takes some time to boot up, but other than that it has no issues. I still have it plugged in, actually.

I came from an HD-DVD household. My family had a large collection HD-DVD movies; a lot of which I still have. Every Saturday, my family would pick a movie to watch. And 9/10, it would be on HD-DVD. My father also was an avid LaserDisc collector, so we had a sizable collection of them as well. We had a similar Toshiba model to that one. We also had a projection TV in the den, i felt like we were at the cutting edge of technology. And then my uncle went and spent his life savings on a fancy new plasma flatscreen, just to show us up. Oh, the memories.... :) Thanks for waking up so many previously dormant memories with these seemingly random video.

HD-DVDs are crazy cheap in the UK and not only that - many of 1€ HD-DVD movies go for like 30-40€ on blu-ray as they are really rare to find. HD-DVD players for x360 go for 5-6€ and can be used with PC. I'm interested in HD-DVD as there seams to be a lot of French movies on the format that either never came out on blu-ray or only came out in French or are crazy expensive on blu-ray. Poland seams to have a lot of exclusive HD-DVDs unreleased in other countries for some reason O.o.

I have a huge collection of HD DVD's and every HD DVD player made still in original boxes including Samsung and LG blu-ray/HD DVD combo players, and both Onkyo and Integra players too. Now the player you have is a 1080i player, and is not a 1080p unit. The players that have 1080p/24fps are the Toshiba HD-A20, HD-A30, HD-XA2 (awesome player with HQV) and HD-A35. Unfortunately some of my Warner collection has started to go bad and they are erroring out on Toshiba units, but can still play on my LG BH200 combo player and Samsung BD-UP5000 combo unit as well. Also have some discs that were exclusively blu-ray in North America, but in Europe they released on both formats and since HD DVD movies were region free, they work here like Resident Evil, Underworld just too name few.

Like Sehnzeleid said alot of discs are suffering from disc rot (mostly Warner Bros. discs) which slowly make them unwatchable or just completely dead (wont even be detected in the players). The disc flipping is dvd one side and hd dvd the other they did this to offer both to people you can get version which doesn't have that disc it's bit like you see now with triple pack digital/dvd/blu-ray. That player is not that big they used to be large even today if you buy a proper quality player they are that sort of size. Quality wise some of the hd dvd was much better then the blu-rays but as of today most have been re issued on blu-ray and had lot of work done on them so they will be better it was also the case with audio as well. Most of those movies you have they was giving away with the players towards the end they even did it if you purchased a player you could claim in the post an extra 6 films just had to send the packaging with paid postage which was only few $

Also the 480 Pal UK releases, And because the Format Is Region Free. I also have American and European as well (Still Make and Sell them there) Look for a copy of Unleashed (Jet Li) as It comes with a huge 5.1 sound that DVD and Blu-Ray doesn't. Ive seen so many mixed reports, people saying all their WB releases have rotted or that they all still play just fine. I mean im in this just for the collecting sake, as most of these have other means of watching in HD. But a few releases, and even some WB ones, were never released on bluray. And I actually own one, The Dukes of Hazzard which is still factory sealed. So it would be nice to be able to watch that and the others in HD some day, but im just not sure of the odds of it or any WB release working at this point.

One thing to remember about HD and BluRay was this was brand new and both processes were not perfected and the Blade Runner Box Set on HD had errors on the Discs and would be freeze and picture would just stop. On the BluRay side the players were rushed out and the firmware was not updated and Remember internet access was impossible for some to get the fix. The processors could not handle the Information well sometimes it would not play the Disc. The spinning wheel of death. The competition was a real one.HD did give BluRay a race that was a close one and HD lost its backing by the Studios and BluRay Production problems plagued HD as well to

8k home video isn’t a thing in reality and 4k Ultra HD is a niche format that only has a few films published. Blu-ray is the best compromise of them all because it has many films, in HD, and is the most durable of those. The most cost effective.

I have update discs for every player Toshiba has made either way and 4.0 was latest firmware. The LG BH200 combo player update is still active as well as Samsung BD-UP5000 combo player. Blu-ray did not have web connectivity back in 2006 or 2007. And HD DVD was the first to have Web Enabled features in early releases that were not even possible with blu ray.

Technical aspects were that the Blu-ray Disc structure was more future proof in that it had more space for multiple data layers. Blu-ray was always capable of storing more data than HD-DVD. The actual reason they won was that Sony made smarter decisions in prioritising distribution. The PS3 was a Blu-ray player so everyone who bought could also watch HD on Blu-ray. Sony had their own film studio so they persuaded more studios to publish on their formats thus more films available on Blu-ray. Back then there was any major difference between the two formats. But look over the history of Blu-ray, I think overall, the right format won.

If you're going to collect hd-dvds DO NOT buy Warner Brothers discs. Tempting when you see them on Ebay for a few bucks but don't waste your money. Have about 40 of them and 30 of them are worthless due to disc rot. Universal and Paramount didn't have that issue. Something with an organic material Warner used 06-08 causes this. 477 HD-DVDs made and believe 180 were Warner. Google HD-DVD list to see what studio made disk before purchasing movie. Have a Toshiba A35 and still check ebay for cheap titles and they still look amazing on my 4k tv. Also, if you plan to collect HD-DVDs don't waste your time on 360 player. Playback only 60p on player and discs are 24p. You get judder that honestly gives you a headache. Look for a Toshiba player from 08 that supports 24p and audio passthrough for TrueHD and DTS-HD.

I found a Toshiba HD DVD player 2 days ago paid 20 pounds for it sadly the thing started to play up with the common fault of not playing discs and freezing up the second day i had it and ended up being smashed up Hopefully i will one day find another player again as even though i love Blue Ray and have a ultra HD player seeing HD DVD i kind of find it rather eye opening when it comes to picture and sound

i chose HD DVD. It was actually the better format, but Sony not wanting to lose another format war (Beta Max was the better format for tape, but Sony charged too much to use Beta) decided to forgo royalty charges to the movie studios to produce movies on Blu-Ray, and Toshiba did not. I have 2 of the 3 Blu-Ray\HD DVD players and 2 stand alone HD DVD players an early 1080i and a later 1080p Toshiba. HD DVD should have won but such as life.

HD-DVD was not better than Blu-ray. Overall Blu-ray was the more future proof format in storage space and improvement. Also Betamax was not superior to VHS, there wasn’t much difference in video quality, it was always behind in recording time and had an unnecessarily complex tape threading system in the players. None of these technical aspects actually contributed to their format wars.

Dude, you know nothing about what you are talking about!!!! I bought both formats when they came out in 2006, and I experienced everything!!!! The discs with the 'no artwork" you are describing were called Combo Format, one side regular DVD, the other HD-DVD, but there were not as many of them!!!! I still have my 2 players, and all my discs, and treasure them. There was no quality difference, 1080p is 1080p!!! Anyway, you're amazement with HD-DVD is ridiculous; All it was, was the rival to Blu-Ray. I had both because I was greedy and wanted all my movies in HD, that's all. Yes, Blu-Ray was better, but only due to technical reasons. The films look exactly the same in both HD-DVD & Blu-Ray Disc formats!!!
