Great video Josh! I've got a '94 Probe GT and also had an issue with sputtering, despite no engine codes. After a lot of troubleshooting, I pulled the spark plug wires and found that some of them were soaked in oil. The engine oil seeped in through bad valve cover (rocker cover) gaskets and degraded the wiring insulation. I replaced those wires, along with the distributor cap for good measure, and that solved the issue. I also just replaced the valve cover gaskets to prevent any further oil leaking onto the spark plug wires. That was a difficult job to do, especially because the intake manifold is difficult to remove. If you see any oil leaking from around the valve covers, or see any oil on your spark plug wires, you'll have to change those gaskets. If you'd like, I'll share my gasket replacement video with you when it's complete. It's an awesome car, have fun!

I also had problems with the valve covers leaking. My local Mazda dealer did the job, but the leaks may have returned. The spark plug wires gave up, although oil was not responsible. They were renewed once but have since been replaced by much better silicone ones. I will follow your progress.
As a guy who's first car is a ford probe, I can relate to this. SUBSCRIBED!

You sound like a cool teacher
I dont know if you still have this car but I still have mine , I have a 1996 GT with a 5 speed manual that I ordered and have only known me as its driver it was my daily driver for over 11 years and retired it I still drive it for pleasure and to drive it from California to Nevada, a lot of things you changed are common things that age and fail on these cars but given the age if you replace one then replace them all such as important components like the Oxygen sensors and the EGR and VRIS solenoids Preventative maintenance is key when it comes to this car and if you don't want to have the bad experience with a check engine always coming on cause something else failed or being stuck on the side of the road cause of another failure somewhere else then I would recommend that you really go through the car and replace all major and minor components that could lead you stranded think of it as a reconditioning of a really fun and great car....it was Motor Trends car of the year in 93 or 94 and its definitely my favorite car out of the ones I own.
A couple of corrections that may help.. The VRIS solenoids have Nothing to do with the EGR system... these go to 2 different vacuum motors that open and close intake runners in the intake manifold to give the car both low end torque And high rpm hp. VRIS means Variable Resonance Induction System ...The EGR systen Does have solenoids controlling it but they are in a different location ...the ones you are looking at are for the VRIS.. The other simple thing is front wheels are directional and should be mounted to match direction of the rears... helps cool the brakes when positioned properly... If you are Stll getting a stumble, it Could be the throttle position sensor or TPS needs adjustment... if it were shot, it would throw a code, but maybe just needs a fine tuning ..beautiful car! Ive had my 94gt for 26yrs, daily driver... have fun!
Right on man, glad to see you're on your way to joining us knucklebusters! I'm a red seal hd mechanic in Canada here, and I just picked up a 93 probe gt 5 speed that I may start to make videos of, along with my jeep yj, and my 88 foxbody notch 5.0. with these cars, the old online forums are going to be your best friend. There is little aftermarket for our probes, but part interchangeability is huge, and there is a whole list online of what is doable. I'll subscribe for sure. Oh and the VRIS changes intake runners, the solenoids activate a couple butterfly valves that change intake flow routes. It was an old shot at "tuning" an intake on the fly, once at midrange, and once at higher rpm. EGR valves recirculate exhaust back into the intake, mainly because the early 70s were awful.
man this makes me want to learn more about my ‘96 pgt so i can work on it myself! love the videos dude, please keep them coming! you did a great job for a first episode!
VRIS has nothing to do with EGR. VRIS stands for variable resonance intake system. It makes the air path longer for low rpms to keep velocity up, and shortens it in stages as you go up in rpms. The resonance part of it is... cars have a peak hp and tq point, that is, one rpm where it makes the most. At it's resonant frequency. If you change the length of the manifold it changes the resonant frequency point. This broadens the tq curve and makes 200hp feel and act like a lot more. What happens at the resonant frequency that is so special? Micro charging. When an intake valve (in the Head not IM,) closes, the previously fast flowing air bunches up against the back of the closed valve compressing like a spring, that air decrompresses back into the intake manifold and helps push air into an open cylinder.
YES! man, I have 2 Ford Probe's. Enjoy her!! You will, she is a blast.
Looks like the one I picked up almost 2 yrs ago. Faded laser red paint. Many of the plastic tubes & hoses falling apart. I had a stumble too. New spark plug wires kinda fixed it but ultimately what I had to do was replace the distributor one day when it refused to start. I replaced that wonky intake system like most people do. Replaced many of the lines & hoses with silicon. Next project... timing belt and water pump. Mine's just under 90k miles. I tried running it on cheap gas without good results. 91 definitely makes a difference.

I took apart my distributor years back when it would not start, (I cranked it with spark plugs out and fried the coil). I put new 50 dollar coil in distributor, and no issues since. The distributor was replaced under warranty before 50k as would overheat and car would just die. A faulty part in distributor which was common.
Good probe vid keep them up
Keep posting man we love it 😊
Very informative, thank you!
I purchased a 1996 Ford Probe GT and it TOO did the exact sputtering thing you are describing here. Car would crank, drive great until the temp got to normal, and then the sputtering started. Knowing this Probe, being a joint venture product w/Mazda, I knew only someone who knew about the Mazda MX-6 could really understand this car in its entirety. So, I luckily had a Lincoln-Mercury dealer locally who also sold Mazdas! Took it to them, vividly explained the symptoms, and after he drove it once, they pinpointed the sputtering to be the distributor. It was diagnosed quickly. As soon as I got it back, in a matter of days, we were in the wind and never looked back. Never had another issue out of it actually!

the sputtering in ur case was because the probe has its ignitor coil Inside the disty and when they go bad the spark weakens or stops.. urs was working ok when cold but the heat afetr warmup caused that coil to misfire.
Great video keep em coming. Subscribed
i had a 95 Probe GT just like yours but with a 5 speed manual. In my experience, only two things ever caused sputtering as you described it, a bad plug wire and low output from the fuel pump.
You take care if that car. Not many that look that good. Should be a collectors piece in the future.
Thanks for the info. I have a 93 so i know this will probably come in handy down the road. Oh and great history lesson!
I have a Ford probe too as a project car. I hope you keep up with uploads.
Current owner of a series 2 MX-6 (5 speed 2.5L 4WS) from Aus here. I too had a terrible sputter issue with my motor a couple months ago. With minimal throttle it would rev up to redline quite fine and feel smooth, however with anything above 20% throttle it would hesitate and misfire. It sounded like something wrong with ignition and so I went down the path of fixing it. I've come to find with most car maintenance tasks, the natural order of solving issues takes the form of the question, what's the cheapest and easiest thing to do which could fix it?. For the ignition system this was broken down into: Spark Plugs > Ignition Leads > distributor cap and rotor button > a whole new distributor. In the end I found that what I needed WAS the new distributor after all but ultimately, it didn't hurt to swap out the aforementioned components for new ones anyway. Luckily I was able to source a refurbished disty for a fair price which worked out great. It's funny because I'm quite similar to you, I've just started studying Mech Engineering, of which I've always been interested in, I find that I'm pretty knowledgeable on mechanical concepts especially surrounding all things automotive. As an 18 year old, I'd perviously never really had much hands on experience and have been expanding on this more and more with my joy of a first car which I have become so enthralled with. Wish you the best of luck with your new project, welcome to the probe/mx-6/626 fam haha!
Nice video
My brother had one exactly like this as his first car
I can't find the OBD1 PLUG-IN PORT on my 1995 Ford Probe S.E. 4 Cylinder. Please help..there is nothing under the drivers side dashboard...2 guys from Napa Auto parts looked & couldn't find a port under the dash either😢
Great video. Keep them coming. Check out “hello road” on you tube. He is doing a series on a purple probe gt also. I would keep yours all original. No more of these cars left, especially ones that are not cut up with aftermarket go fast parts. I’m original owner of a 94 get 5speed also. 190k miles. No issues at all. Other than normal items like. Leaking valve gaskets, bad vris, erg valve, noisy cam sprocket spring. Mine all original. I plan to keep that way as you never know, and just enjoy it for what it is. Your hesitation must be bad oil soaked leads, or just bad gas that needs some good cleaner. Good luck.

Hey guys! very glad to see this video and how recent this was. I have two Probes, 1995 and 1997. My goal is to get one of them completely back to stock over time. any tips will be very helpful. i have not gotten too far in into this project. mostly cosmetic. first project is to take the front bumper off and reconnect the fog lights. any suggestions?

Stick with square fog lights! Get a Haynes manual so you can find out how to correctly take off the bumper. Some guy who previously owned mine has completely broken just about every single piece of plastic, and none of the panels are aligned. Not even the rear bumper.
Hi, I have the same car. When I purchased it 9 months ago, I found 5 or 6 error codes and I managed to clear them all after replacing the lambdas and one VRIS valve as you did, then the fuel pressure regulator valve and a EGR solenoid. Apart from that, I did major replacements of many mechanical parts of the brakes, overhauled the whole suspension, drive shafts, etc. and fixed the ABS unit too. When I bought it I replaced the HT leads and spark plugs, very easy to do and very cheap, I really recommend that. You have lots of very cheap new parts for this car at Rockauto (not affiliated with them). I also had to replace almost all the exhaust including the exhaust manifolds (with integrated catalytic converters, both were melted) and the valve cover seals, that were leaking into the exhaust. I took the opportunity to replace some small broken vacuum pipes. You really should test the vacuum system with a vacuum hand pump. Finally, I found that the timing belt was two teeth off for one of the cylinder banks so I had to replace and retime it. This made the engine run better. After all this, I still notice some hesitation when cold (only noticeable if you floor it in 3rd or higher gears at mid rpms) that gradually disappears when warming up. No codes and almost everything replaced.

Great job. My first, new car was a '96 Ford Probe GT fresh off the lot. Mine had the 5 speed manual transmission. It was kind of funny being mine was a GT that my buddy with a similar year SE base model came with cruise control, and mine did not. Who would of thunk it? LOL. It lasted me six great years with only an oil sending unit going out. Fortunately it went out in my then girlfriend's driveway because had I been on the highway etc I would have probably lost all engine oil and locked up the engine. Hopefully the OIL light would of given me some advanced warning. In the six years of ownership it did have some electrical problems, but this was the 90's, I was young, and I had one of those fancy stereo systems in it. LOL. I sold it to a good friend who asked that it only get him through college. I got it for $17600 back then and sold it six years later for $2500. Depreciation right? It did get my friend through college earning a degree. Being that he never changed the oil(smh) or even washed it, it finally died. He sold it to some guy that was going to fix it up. Sad day. It would do 80mph in 3rd gear though.
welcom to the family
Don't be surprised if your sputter ends up being the distributor. They're problematic and are a "when it fails" scenario, no if.

Took mine to a Lincoln dealer who actually had a Mazda dealership as well and bingo...distributor. Replaced. And this car ran better than new after that!
You have two wheels attached in a wrong manner. The right rear wheel has to be put on the left front. And the left front wheel has to be put to the right rear. (sry for my eng.).
You have two wheels on the wrong side of the car. They're directional. Please ignore if someone has already mentioned this. There are resources on the web including Probetalk.com forums (currently resurrecting itself) and several Facebook groups.
This vid about my dream first car was made on my birthday. Lol
how much was it? cool looking and sporty 90s ride!

Bro. This car has plenty of room for upgrades both performance and athletic. Japanese engineering and American styling. Engine is great but keep an eye on the 5th and 6th cilinders as they tend to show early signs of engine rebuild. Sounds great. 1 have a 95 24v RHD black Ford Probe with an 95'mx6 spoiler. My first car was a 94 Probe...all I gotta say is, RUN! Run far away from it.
Just be careful...the automatic transmission in these cars are a notorious weak spot in both performance and reliability...it will crap out it's just a matter of when so keep that in mind
