For the oil to look like that the car would have been running when it flooded or it could of had a blown head gasket before the flood. I would imagine that the rod bearing would’ve spun if it was running when it flooded, I would recommend doing a rebuild or swap. If all the electronics were working then I think it was a blown head gasket then sat in flood water to claim insurance.

Also looks like the car was tuned and has TGV deletes on it so take good inventory on all the parts you have because the car won’t run right without a correct tune for the aftermarket parts or put everything back to stock and it should work fine. That milkshake oil means the car was running while there was coolant/water in the oil. NOT just flood water added to the oil from a flood. Because the insurance company is the biggest racket around. That's the entire reason people purposely "accidentally" damage a new car they are behind in the lease on so they can get their money back. I've seen cars declared totaled out because of some panel dents and a few scratches. Because they tell you in order to fix a dent or a scratch you have to remove and replace the entire panel and repaint it, at the dealer, at OEM prices, with OEM labor charges.

I feel like there are some pretty obvious things overlooked when assessing the history of the car. The SCCA sticker on the back driver's side window is a good hint the car has been used for racing. This is reinforced by the aftermarket aluminum radiator and the Mishimoto radiator cap. Others have already pointed out the milky oil could be a head gasket issue which is probably a decent guess considering the water level was not high enough to flood the engine. Regardless, save yourself a step and rip out the engine and start a rebuild. As you mentioned, Subaru parts are really easy to find and replace in Portland. Lots of places will sell you a rebuilt EJ for under $2K. This will be a fun build to watch. Partner with some of the local Subaru Performance companies like Perrin or Nameless and make a beast.

The engine is easy to turn because it doesn't have compression. It's likely that it hydrolocked and pushed water out the valves that are rusty. Water got into the engine through the exhaust system and into the oil by getting past the piston rings. I've seen this exact thing before. I'd recommend a compression test before doing anything else with it. I'm really enjoying the change of pace with this build, I look forward to seeing how it turns out!

Run at idle for a few minutes. Drain. Do that again till milkshake is gone. Then start replacing it with cheap oil, then good oil. Trust me, brought back a lot of pwcs doing that. Even took one apart afterwards to see and the diesel cleaned everything

But the fucking head was blown in a way that was pushing exhaust into the radiator system and making it puke it all out. The car was a 4 banger automatic with like 300,xxx miles on it so not worth the rebuild. Sold it off for like $800 to the next guy to wash my hands of it.

mate of mine did that here in New Zealand where you normally cant import a flood damaged vehicle and register it for the road. because it was being turned into a rally car he was able to legally put it on the road as all wire harness, computer, seatbelts etc were replaced. airbags were removed. we striped it to a bare shell and rebuilt it. we even had to water blast inside the fuel cell as it had lots of crap in it. silly thing is after a year all the normal fittings could be put back in and it would be classed as an existing vehicle under the law.

I was thinking the same thing although idk why he would have kept some of the front accessories on like alternator and a/c compressor. Also didn’t even attempt to take out the radiator to get to the crank and timing cover. Sounds to me like he might have been chasing a boost leak. My buddy had a bad intake manifold leak on his 05 wrx some time after tgv deletes. Guess we will find out.

I own two of these, 2004 & 2006 STI’s, Nice choice 👍 Looks like you got everything working, needs a few things needed here and there but overall looks solid. Only thing I’d suggest to whomever is building it, that after you get it all back together and with the mileage that car has, you will have to do a timing belt service (100k) on that car so just another step but nothing too big if you know what your doing. Good luck guys.
