Ethan, 72 here and I've lived mostly off grid since I was your age. I love it. A few tips? Leave the hood of your truck up overnight. So many critters will try to nest and eat your trucks wiring. Paint your water cubes black. they tend to grow algae otherwise. This looks very much like my property here in Central Oregon. I do have some juniper here and just lately noticed I have two bluebird couples building nests. So blessed. I hope your new adventure is a blessed one, too. It will be a never ending war with the damn rodent issue.

Put out aluminum low rise pans filled with 50%cornmeal and 50% baking soda and mix it well. And out them all around your homestead. They rodents will eat this and never come back. It’s worked for over a century old farmers way of getting rid of them.

Congratulations young man--you are truly amazing. I'm 83 and closing in on the end of my life but have been a wanderer for a great part of it--you have so many more years to enjoy. Just a couple thoughts: many of your followers have given you so many great ideas already--here are a couple more: find out what wildlife is around you (boar, coyotes, bear, etc.) your new neighbors will be a wealth of information. I suggest you buy a couple guns--shot gun, rifle, pistol, and learn how to use them. Until you know the lay of the land keep your dog in doors if he's alone. Best of luck to you. Be safe and careful.

Ethan/Austin you may want to look into prefab homes. You have someone build a foundation with cement blocks. The plumbing and electrical is setup through the foundation. Then a manufacturactured home is broght in via truck and set on top of the foundation. Its fairly easy to get up and running.

Nice new "farm". If you never had animals before, it does take awhile to settle into the routine of them and you. The daily watering, feeding and letting out is mundane, but very important. Chickens 6 - 12 (Rhode Island Reds) will produce 1,200 to 2,000 eggs annually (200 per bird). Eating 2 to 4 eggs per day per person, gives you almost 100% of your protein. In your environment, you will need a coop, a hen house and a covered area protected from predators (hawks, coyotes, and what not). After 3 years, Rhode Islands are okay meat birds as well. Note: adult chickens are hella expensive, and you are never sure of when they started laying their first eggs, so best to purchase chicks in late winter early spring and raise them up. It takes approximately 6 months before your first egg. But it is a good growing experience and they are fun to watch!

I have a farm in Australia, NSW. Always start with planting the fruit & nut trees you would like to have because they’ll take up to five years to start producing. Before you buy any trees check that they’ll survive the weather/climate you are in. Grow organic for strong trees - use rock dust to dig into your soil because your soil looks deficient. Add organic matter- get a composting toilet so you can enrich the soil around trees - don’t use on vegi patch, obviously. Looking forward to your progress 🤠👍🏼

🐊 ❤ Looks like a fun new adventure! Very smart ripping the scrub brush out with the winch roots and all. You might consider a 12v pump so you can just drop a hose into your water can and then put the other end into the camper fill hole. I hope you’re not in for many headaches building a container home. The complexities of working with metal vs. wood, the thermal properties of metal are difficult to solve effectively and their cost isn’t as cheap as they used to be. You guys have plenty of skills. You could frame your own house or at least prepare the site for a factory built home to be craned into place. 100% that’s what I would do. Prefabricated, factory built homes are the future. It’ll be so much easier and more comfortable than a SC house, it’ll have a higher resale value than a SC house and it’ll come with a warranty if something breaks.

Good ideas. For city folk, an ATV = all terrain vehicle. A "side by side" looks like a golf cart but with a gas engine. Used ones look kinda beat up but they are just dirty. They are good for most tasks and they carry 2 people, and a tractor does not.

  • @John-PaulMartin

Two things. 1). Since you are attempting to keep mice out, You need to put a inverted parabolic shield on each pole supporting the trailer. That way they can not climb up the poles. 2). You can get really sick from the mice. It is very important to keep the mice out of you water supply and the camper! I am not sure how to keep the mice away from your water tank, except to put iton stilts and attach the inverted parabolic shield on the stilts. Yo7 also have to keep the mice out of the outhouse waste. Remember, mice WILL get into a 1/4 inch hole, so you have to seal every crack and opening. Also ALL food has to be kept sealed and not out. Good luck on your property. Don’t forget to ask you fan base if you have problems. The next thing you need is a solar array and solar heater death ray!)🏖🌵🕷🦂👍🥰 Wear a hat & sunscreen every day?

Get a bottle of peppermint oil and stray under the truck's hood, especially the wiring harnesses. This may keep the mice out. They love chewing on the wire insulation. Also, if you leave a vehicle sitting for a while, open the hood. Mice don't like open spaced. Obviously don't leave it open during rain.

Ethan- Look into farm subsidies! My uncle had a government guy stop by and asked him if he farmed and sold produce, he said yes because he did sell something once. The government paid him for decades to “not farm” a portion of his 60 acres as part of their farmer support program or whatever they call it. He said ‘the government paid for his “farm” several times over!’ LOL! Just a thought!

If you’re doing some sort of farming or animals, you can get an agricultural property tax rate. Are you in Colorado? My brother has 40 acres. Hannah‘s wife got goats so they could have agriculture status. The first year they got a check for $3.20 for shearing the goats fur. They left the goat business when somebody came and put a flyer on their mailbox wanting to buy Pondosa pine trees. The first year with the trees, they made $7700. It works perfect, they thin the trees out and fill the holes in. Then they put seedlings in the holes.

Have not tried it myself but I have heard to get cats and dogs acclimated to new homes, put Crisco or butter on their paws and let them roam close to the house. As they walk around they will release that scent close to home as they walk sround and they will know that scent from licking their paws, and use the scent to come back to the home.

Careful with the Big Water Containers, if the water sets to long it goes bad. You might want to use the big containers for your shower source. Also if you can get the well repaired that will go a long way to make your life easier.

Wow... I knew running a KZread channel with 121k subscribers was enough to live on, but enough to buy 30 acres of land at 22 years old?? During a time of record high real estate prices to boot? That's surprising to me. I know it's just undeveloped land out in the middle of nowhere, so I'm sure it was relatively cheap, but still. 30 acres of land is 30 acres of land.

First thing you need is a well and electric power to run it. If you are too far from the grid to get power, you need some solar and a solar power-able submersible pump. At some point you will need a septic tank and drain field where you build a house of some kind. Forget about using a shipping container as a house; nothing but trouble and expenses and building code problems. (See Tyler and Todd's videos for example) Either get a mobile, or find a kit house that you and Austin can help finish, and resell some day at a profit if you need to move on. Maybe a "tiny house" if this is just an escape/vacation location. Looks too dry there to actually "farm", but you would need a reliable well for even a home vegetable garden, which you might have time for once you have a stabile residence to live in. Good luck to you and Austin.
