I Bought a CHEAP Stihl KNOCKOFF Chainsaw Mill on Marketplace

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today I try out a cheap Stihl knockoff I bought on Facebook marketplace a couple weeks ago and I was amazed with the results! I'm definitely not getting rid of my Wood-Mizer sawmill. Don't worry!

I think you got a great deal on the chainsaw, mainly because you know how to troubleshoot issues that arise, and overcome it "not being a Stihl." I think the Alaskan mill gauge looked like more work than reward....and if you ever get a 26"+wide hardwood log, you'll find yourself using the chainsaw to trim it to where your Woodmizer mill can handle it much better. I greatly appreciate the video - I think your chainsaw purchase was a great find, and you're already putting it to good use (as I just saw it in the firewood video)! You didn't even need to grab the carb adjustment wrenches (yet).

That’s what I started off with, a Stihl 660 and a grand burg mill. Cut the teeth to 5 degrees on your chain, 25 degrees is for cross grain cutting, 5 is for ripping. Hope that helps.

I was thinking that was a crosscut chain. I have a ripping chain for my other saw and they told me 10 degrees. I haven’t had to sharpen that one yet.

I have never seen your channel before so I don't know your history, but see you have a sawmill. With that knowledge I was wondering why a person would even bother with a chainsaw mill. I saw you want to get a longer bar to do some slabs so maybe that is why. If you do buy a longer bar, don't get a hard nose like the saw currently has. They are terrible for milling and steal so much power. I have the Holtzfforma G660 and did some milling with it before I bought a real sawmill and they can do some milling, but I much prefer the sawmill. Less waste, faster, better cuts, less fuel...But wide cuts and portability are the strong points on the chainsaw mills. Best of luck on your adventures! Think I'll sub and see what else you're up to.

Those saws use to be 30 to 1 mix. The jungle loggers use these saws to rip freehand. They are worth a watch. That’s the way I mill my lumber, zero deg grind, no rackers. Much faster and a lot less gas. Use 36” bar but I use a lighter high performance saw.

Good morning buddy how are ya? I to bought a knock off for the same reason. My mill can cut 36 inches but there are so many logs that are much bigger than I can cut. So I quarter huge logs to get them small enough to be able to cut them into lumber. I haven’t slabbed anything yet not many huge hard woods up here on the mountain. I use a ripping skip chain its easier on the power head, and a much smoother cut . Thanks for sharing God bless you and the family. Have a happy thanksgiving!

My first chain saw mill was a Bumble Bee mill It had a monorail and the log was loaded below the rail The saw cut down into the log from above. The best part was the rope wench that pulled the saw threw the log. Now if you come-up with a rope puller attachment on that mill. Your back will thank you. Your right in thanking it can cut wider slabs. But you can also cut 60' long beams. (Well if your back does not go out first.) lol.

The parts you changed are to help guide the power head over and pass bumps in the log. Ask your buddy to show you how it works. Will save alot of time on the learning curve. I started with an Alaskan Mill with the same brand saw that was a MS660 92cc saw. I quickly determined that was not the way to go. I then purchased a Woodland Mills HM130MAX and never looked back. I have used my Alaskan mill for some 42 inch Pines to 4 side them so I could cut them on my HM130MAX which maxes out at 30 inches so it was not wasted money from that standpoint. Great Video.

@@NorthwestSawyer I look at it as you got a great deal in a long blade chainsaw with a large displacement. The Alaskan Mill was a bonus but you probably will not use it unless your Woodmizer cannot handle a log and in that case you probably will need a longer bar for that saw and a 4 foot Alaskan mill. You loose a lot of bar length with an Alaskan sawmill by it very clamping design. I now have a 4 foot Alaskan mill and about the longest bar 92cc can handle. Did you measure the effective cutting length of your setup compared to your WM sawmill? Also if you do start cutting slabs with your Alaskan mill don't forget to us wedges to keep the pinch off your bar and chain. I thought you started with a Woodland Mills sawmill but I could not remember which one you had. So far I have never found a sawmill for the same money that I wished I would have purchased. If Woodland mills could just turn that 7 inch throat into a 10 inch or more they could corner the market at a great price point for a starter manual sawmill. I think my next sawmill, if there is one, will be a Timberking with its 16 inch throat. Now that is a quarter sawing mill.

Hey Jason, the guides that you moved to the tip of the bar need to go back on the power head side. They help the saw move along the bark when you are making a cut without the ladder as a guide on top of the log. Also, next time you slab something elevate one end of the log a little! It makes a huge difference to have gravity pulling the saw into the cut. I would highly recommend an Oregon brand ripping chain also. I believe they come sharpened at 10 deg.

As you said with a longer bar you could make some good size slabs that you can't with your LT35. Or even still just make some initial trimming cuts to get a big log to the point that it would fit on your Woodmizer.
