Well let me tell you I survived a cab tilt while going down a hill in a Mack cabover. It was a spring assist manual tilt cab and the frame that held the latch broke. I noticed the gear shift getting short and reached down threw the shifter hole and grabbed the shift leaver and held the cab from going all the way. Had to coast it to a stop. Used chains to hold cab down. Broke the one windshield doing so. That was the last trip I went in that tractor. They got me a new White Road Commander conventional to replace it. No more triplex for me. That was 45 years ago. 318 with a 15 speed roadranger and the best seat avaliable almost made it worth the experience . Enjoy your videos!

What you've got there is a "shiny 290". It is one of the best Cummins engines I've ever driven. Probably had the android valve deleted and a 29 button installed.⭐

O God. That was the last truck I ever drove. 81-82 Block truck. Gettin in I slipped and caught myself and ripped muscles out of my shoulder. Just please be careful cuz us old guys don’t heal as fast as we use to.

Hank, I hope you wife knows you are bringing a used GMC ASTRO to the farm. Look on the middle/back of the block just below the aftercooler and there is a serial number stamped in the block. You can call any Cummins dealer and they can give you the CPL number and all other related questions on the engine. God Bless..

Great video guys! I just remembered that I used to have a Nylint metal Walmart tractor trailer set and the tractor was a GMC Astro like this one!

That intake is an intercooler that was first used on the 350 horse

hey just a note to lift can without the hydraulic pump you van use a 4 wheel drive hyjack or they call them off road jacks it will fit between cab and frame and lift it up to 60 inches

I love the patina on that cab , You take that as is to any classic truck show and I guarantee you that old girl will get 10 times more attention than the shiny restored trucks

Yep you guys got it. The cab jack pumps fluid to the cab release latches and the lift cylinders. It takes less pressure to compress those springs and release the latches then lift the cab so they release first and then the cab starts going up. And when you have the cab all the way over like that you have to use the jack to get it back up over center to lower it back down. Years ago I worked at a place that got a lot of deliveries and a guy came in one of those Astros and locked his keys in the truck. The ignition switch was over by your right knee on those. I just jacked the cab up enough to reach through the hole for the shifter and pull the keys out of the switch and hand it to him. I don't know if GMC ever did but other makes like International and Kenworth came up with a different shifter arrangement on their newer cab overs so there was no longer a hole in the floor to fit over the shifter Tower.

Serial Number is on driver side rear on a flat spot right above the cam follower cover which is above where it says BIG CAM!

Howboutcha Hank, Should have used the liquid Wrench straight away to get the Cab open, saves time 🤠 God bless you both.

There's a tag on the fuel pump as well which will have the "CPL" number that will tell you exactly what engine it is

@@HamiltonvilleFarm The CPL is a 3 digit Cummins code for the engine arrangement...you will have to look it up to find out exactly which engine it is....you can find a cheat sheet online that lists the CPL of every engine Cummins ever made

You can tell if it's a Big cam or small cam Cummins engine by the size of the cam follower housing.

Those cab lock are similar to the old kenworth k125 have one parked in my shed and the jack is there but locks are jamed tight and it blew a hydraulic hose think of unbolted the locks to or force air into them that what been told anway

Chevy was the Titan, discontinued 1981. With 3.70 gears, you are going to need all the power you can get just to get down the road. Somebody may have jacked up a big cam 350 and just ripped off the tag instead of restamping.

Hey hank and Wiley y’all know if MSJ out of opp Alabama is still in business? I use to drive for them that’s the type frieghtliner I’m looking for.

Instead of paying $20 for a can of penetrating oil just mix up half engine oil and kerosene i used to work with aerosols.

If I may, I did a search of : how to identify 1981 cummins diesel engines, and came up with tons of information. Hope that helps. Off topic, last time I took a picture of a rear end, it cost me a week in the county lock up . Just sayin.

Its not a big cam 4 . Its either the 290 or 300. The Cooler isnt big enough to be a big cam. And It can only be bumped up to a 350 but you have to rebuild it totally to get there.There a good engine

Nice buy! i'd love too see a powerwashing and detail video on it. I think it'll clean up nice.

Change your mind and restore it back to its original glory get you a lowdeck trailer and haul your equipment and the flowers in season. Thats a great rig to restore and put back the original paint scheme !!! Bruce lives not too far from you and in his videos he knows of a rig graveyard that im sure has the parts to get that baby all back together!! One thing I noticed in years video is that the right wheel oil seal plug was out the front bearing is run in gear oil so you need to check that wheel bearing to make sure it didn't run dry towing it and burn up the bearings. I couldn't see the driver side cap but if it's the same be sure to check both bearing in the wheels and before it moves around much get some oil back in and the plugs too. It will show you on the glass the fill level to run the oil. Hopefully it didn't eat the rear seal out on the hub but that's not too hard to change. Be a sweet setup with the Hamiltonville Farms or the Black Blossom logo on the sides and either a box trailer or a lowdeck trailer hooked up and rollin!!! " HOWBOUTCHA" PUT ON THE FRONT VISOR!! Lol 😆

Maybe it's a dumb idea for some reason and if it is I hope you will enlighten me, but couldn't you hook the ends of a smaller ratchet strap through the retaining claws for the cab lockdown mechanism and just winch them towards each other at the same time?

Hmmm..

Check that CPL number it will tell you exactly what it is ....it being an 81 and actually in a road tractor its more than likely a bigcam 400 NTC855........there are 4 different variations of the bigcam400 ..i,ii,iii,iv cpl number will tell you which one you have ..also the 350 bigcam has smaller cam followers than the 400....its definately not a shiney 290 or formula 290

If you use it for private hauling ( camper etc., ) you don’t need a CDL !

Jack part of a porta- power would have worked. Cummins made a 350,400,and a 450 at that time
