I bought an incredible Jaguar XF R at the Junk Auto Bank sale. It was sold super cheap because of an "engine knock" which was misdiagnosed and it is just a simple $20 part... This car is easily as good as the BMW M5, E63 and E55 AMG, and Audi RS7 if you compare how much they cost. Also make sure you check out the Jaguar XF Supercharged, it's nearly as good and even cheaper!

I've owned an XF 5.0. 2012. It was awesome!!! No maintenance issues ever. Head turner, luxury, wonderful. Why did I sell? To buy a Jaguar XK-R. Now that IS a CAR!!! One of the best grand tourers ever! Yours was a steal man! And it looks great!
bought a 2018 1 owner XE S 28K miles 10 months ago. i do my own oil changes every 5K with the JLR kit from FCP. this car makes me smile every time i drive it. unfortunately i have a 60 mile total commute to work 5x a week but the car preforms like day 1 six years ago. there are quite a bit of jags here in connecticut. i love seeing other jag owners. great video! educated me a bit!!
GM used these as well on their supercharged engines. The problem with the noise is that if the amount of play gets to be too large, and in your case, it sounds like it was very very close to that limit, the impellers inside the supercharger grind against each other and the entire thing comes apart. If you are lucky, the damage is small, usually valves (usually the edges get nicks in them from the metal shavings and some cylinder scoring) and the system bypasses the damaged part. Or it can send an inch piece of metal into a cylinder. IME, the replacement items are good for 40-60K miles, same as the original. They wear out and are a normal item to replace every 3-5 years. On this car, it's buried. On a GM, it's on the top of the engine and a 20 minute job.
I’ll probably find an engine knock car and it will have a real knock from a bad c-rod.

Hey Sam, i used engine flush on a 2001 skoda octavia 1.8T (audi engine) that hat a lot of gunk build up, and a problem with the oil pressure. After pouring in the stuff you could hear the engine running quieter. I drained the oil, and filled op with quality synthetic oil and a friction modifier. The oil pressure problem was gone, that was over 6 years ago. I have used an engine flush for every oil change since then and the engine never made any problems again. The car is still used regularly by a family member and it runs better then when i got it.
I've used Liqui Moly MoS2 Anti-Friction oil on a 2002 MB SLK and the engine stopped making rattle noises after sitting for a while (common issue on M111 engines). Not sure which "friction modifier" you had in mind, but this oil with MoS2 made a difference in my case.
Dropped everything to watch ! Cool car Samcrac .big support from Tennessee
The sound of the supercharged V8 jags is amazing. One rolled by me one day on the interstate and I stopped by the dealership the next day.
Re Friction modifiers: I daily drove an F350 with the 6.0 for a while (never had a single issue in 60k miles) and in my second winter with the truck, I started using a friction modifier. Made a world of difference on winter cold starts. It ran way smoother and quieter than it used to on those sub-10°F mornings
Hi Sam, You asked to comment on Oil Advertises for Sludge, well I've been using these for some 15 years here in Australia and have had fantastic results along the way. We use all types here and they are so good to bring cars back to "As Knew a condition" I kid you not. Love your blogs, keep up the good work mate. - Alan.
Just to touch on the differences between the XF Supercharged and XFR. For pre-facelift XF-S models (2010 and 2011) it was mechanically identical to the XFR (i compared parts lists when I bought my SUpercharged) and for the facelifts, as far as I can tell, only the stock tire offered changed betweed it and the XFR. Most of what you got going for an R outside the extra 40HP was the sporty bolstered seats (available on XF "S" models and XFR in facelift only), an R badge on the gauges, infotainment, passenger dash panel, seats, and rear, 2 heat extractors on the hood, different front and rear fascia, and wheel design (both got 20" wheels as standard in the same width and offsets). Both have the same tuning capabilities and limitations (intercooler upgrades needed to breach 630Hp reliably, when to swap lower pulleys, the relative uselessness of changing the airboxes until 650+), the same 6HP ZF transmission, and the same E-Diff.
Yep I use a fluid extractor to pump out the oil on my MB and the filter housing is on the top of the motor. That pump has paid for itself many times over and the time it saves me is incredible. I have the oil changed on the car in less than 20 minutes. Main thing is to run the motor for a bit before doing the change because the warm oil will flow far better when being extracted.
@kylebutler7142
Жыл бұрын
You should always change oil hot. It flows better and also takes more impurities out with it
I use archoil in my 2005 powerstroke diesel and I noticed right off that the engine starts quicker and is much quieter. It can also be used in gas engines. I am going to start putting it in my cars. Good stuff!
If you put something heavy on the gear selector it will break the mechanism that makes it rise, however the manual states you can still move it. I have the V6 version of this and I love it.
Excellent content Sam, can’t wait for more on the XFR.

My XF has been trouble free for 1 year of abuse, only thing that's broken is a headlight and a clamp on the exhaust came loose after gutting the mid section, probably the shops fault, caused a horrible rattle, few twists of a screw driver and problem solved... I think most European cars are unreliable in the US because many people in the US do 20+k miles a year and often with barely any maintenance then wonder why they blow their engine, I think euro car engines are much more modern and technology filled and therefore are much more sensitive to maintenance and small defects cause bigger issues, US engines seem to be straight to the point, simple, boat loads of power and due to the simplistic nature, much more reliable and easy to fix when they do mess up

Sam I've used liquimoly mso2 antifricton with great success, it's not a huge difference as the oil is the main component and has all the detergents and friction modifiers. But the mso2 is great stuff!!!! But engine flush is not generally recomended and especially with small passages inside the engine, use some atf in the oil, drive a few 100 miles, then change oil again. It will slowly dissolve the gunk but the flush will break off chunks quickly and can clog more than it unclogs
Awesome video. I love the tradition and cachet of Jaguar (I used to own a 1963 Mark 2 back in the 70s) and I am glad to see that the brand is making a comeback after being mired in obsolescence and mediocrity for so many years. My wife owned a car with a 231 Buick. They were notorious for oil control issues. I tore the top of the engine down and found thick dried oil all over the cylinder valley. I scraped it out with a putty knife but I couldn’t drop the pan. I changed the oil which turned black instantly on startup due to the buildup. I put a can of engine restore through it. Chunks poured out of the oil pan....chunks. A week later I ran restore through again and I got really dirty oil out of it. I refilled it and that oil change stayed clean. The flush had removed years of oil buildup.

Best I've found is Motor Kote. Several years ago a truck driver told me it would stop the lifter tick on my 5.4 Triton expedition. Bought a quart , put it in and before I got out of the parking lot it quieted down. That was at 150k miles, it's got over 400k now. 1 quart every third oil change. Also used it in my last Kenworth, when I sold it , it had 1.9 million miles, no engine issues on a C15 Acert...on that one was 1 gallon every third oil change.

I own 2 Land Rovers and Ive learned that all JLR products have certain gremlins that if you are mechanically inclined you can fix them and have an awesome machine. Most people are just scared of them because they hear about or experience horror stories after things go too long unfixed causing the $12000 engine (+labor) to explode. The air suspension is very simple to fix if you have a good diagnostic tool but the dealers charge thousands. If you are gonna pay someone to work on them run away. If you can do it then they are cheap and absolutely awesome. That 5.0 supercharged is a silky smooth monster.
this video is a blessing to anyone who has the exact same sound, I found a 2010 xF Supercharged it has little hail damage, 105k miles he's asking $4900 I'm trying to buy it in morning
I never used the friction modifiers however i use the flush regularly. On my old Grand Prix they always told me there was sludge and had to do a flush....then i started putting Seafoam in the crankcase before going for an oil change and they were always shocked how clean it was. The fact the engine ran perfectly smooth with no work at all for more than 11 years I was sold
That thing is a beauty.

Just because you got 1 that is good, doesn’t mean the thousands of other people haven’t had tons of problems. There’s no arguing that they break prematurely and the cost of repair is ridiculous. If you have the money to repair it and keep it in the road, more power to you. The average car owner would be wise to stay far away from Jaguar, bmw, pretty much any European brand
Jaguar invited me to one of their driving events in 2012 (even though I couldn't afford one at the time). I drove an XF-R around a little circuit and it was a ton of fun. I loved the looks, comfort, handling, etc... but was/am too concerned about reliability and efficiency. I keep looking though.
I used a friction modifier I got off a traveling salesman back in the early eighties when gas prices skyrocketed. I put it in a '64 Pontiac Bonneville and immediately the engine idle sped up. That saved me from trying to figure out how to set the idle on the Carter AFB carb. Sold it to a relative who ended up spinning a main bearing.

The shifting knob failed multiple times on my dads here in the uk apparently at the time the road side assist said it was common and Jaguar would not replace it under warranty
My rover 75 V6 froze up due to oil starvation (serious neglect by previous owner). After changing the cilinderhead it sort of half froze next day. We were able to losen it manual by turning the crank. After adding a lubrication additive no problems have occurred since.
That jaguar logo on steering wheel is lit 🔥
That is one clean looking jag for that price.
I use an extractor pump on my vw car, super easy but takes longer. Sometimes I would rather just pull the plug. I have used engine flush in an older car with less then perfect service history. Didn't cause any noticable damage. My opinion is if it makes you feel good inside, go ahead and use it. I don't feel it's needed on a car that has good service history with quality oil. As for the friction modifiers, I used them religiously in a 2g dsm.i can't say that it caused any problems or helped. However when I pulled the engine apart the cams, followers and cylinder walls looked really good with little wear for 110k miles.
I have used the BG product line. My indy MB mechanic suggested their friction modifiers because of their warranty on engine failure. I have used the flush and it, for sure, cleaned out a clogged lifter on my Silverado. No more tick tick tick. Not a bad idea every 20,000 miles. I still change the oil every 4,000 miles or so because I have heard way too many stories from mechanics that say the extended intervals are baloney. Oil is relatively cheap. Repairs aren't.

I add hexagonal boron nitride and tungsten disulfide (tablespoon and 1/2 teaspoon respectively) to all my engines now and it smooths them out significantly. Idle revs are lower, they have more power and are less burdened, and get better mileage. The smallest grade powders also reduce wear by 55% or so depending on concentration by weight.
Sam, the jokes and banter in the videos you & Rich Benoit make are just hilarious!!! Please keep them coming
Lubrication?? No, no. Lubricity my friend.
I remember that you need to hold the Traction button for 10 seconds from the top gear action movie episode
Looks like it's in great shape really hope everything goes well with it
Here in England the mk1 Jag xf did have an issue with the gear shifter knob not coming up and yes you're stranded if it does. Some car's were recalled. The xf is a comfortable cruiser and I love mine.
What the hell did you do to get the paint to look so good starting at 3:10? I need to do that to my car.
I have a XF and the gear selector dial has been known to fail and get stuck down, huge job to get it fixed and a absolute nightmare job, I'd also recommend going into your climate settings and putting the rotating vents into 'always open' as cool as it is having the spinning vents, if and when they stop working I believe it's a dashboard out repair, again a total nightmare... Fantastic cars to drive and personally I found it to handle waaay better than a BMW 5 series, only bad point for me is that in the UK a XF is horrible to keep fueling when we're paying not far off $2 per litre of V Power

I turned off the vents on mine as well. Check for sunroof leakage as its what kills the transmission electronics dial. Also avoid any drinks near it. Used one was around 600-800 last time I checked for an '09 Supercharged. Not hard to replace.

@@papi7rx7 ahh I see, I've never looked into cost but from what I read and heard if the dial doesn't rise, it's a bitch to even get the car to roll to get to a mechanic for repair 🤷🏼♂️ there's some way of releasing it into neutral I think if it fails, I'd hope at least cause you definitely don't wanna be pulling it onto a trailer or flatbed in park

@@DrRage1999 yes, there is a lever by cup holder. You need to pull small trim off and use a coin to turn the lever to release and put in Neutral.
That is a great looking car, well done Sam!
i use an engine flush for every single oil change on my XK (5.0L NA, not SC) it is well worth the peace of mind. also, pretty sure you're going to blow your ZF HP6 apart with that much power. the F-type has the HP8, so consider it. you should still be able to pull fuse 19 on any XKR or XFR to leave the pipes open. also, you should definitely flush the oil galleries when you change it. remove the filter, pour some oil in there (not the engine flush), then extract it. then you're actually done.
What a steal beautiful car
I never liked oil extractors. It never really gets all of the sludge in the bottom of the oil pan. I'd also consider getting a used oil analysis on everyone of your auction buys just to see if it may bring any potential issues up.

I sad virtually the same thing. It’s a bad way to extract fluids whose time to go away has come.

that's the big difference between a car designed for extraction and a car that isn't though. One designed for extraction will extract all the oil. Bit like some cars have a drain plug on the side of the pan, there's still a 1/8"-1/4" of oil after draining with the plug. That being said though modern vehicles don't have sludge at the bottom of the pan, if you do then there's more to worry about than how you drain the oil
Love ya videos mate keep them coming 🙌
I love older sport sedans of all makes and models Good find on this jaq!👍

Great car. My 2009 XF SC is the best car I've ever owned. The only problem has been the coolant float. Changed the coolant tank myself for $30.
I've used seafoam before oil changes, and changed out with wix filters and Schaeffer's with liquid-moly for years. We had to get our '16 Hyundai a new motor in October, but it was covered even at 124,500 miles.
