Characters surviving stupidly lethal situations is the biggest downside of the series. That being said when characters do die (outside flashbacks) their dead body will usually be shown and stated to be dead. On the "bright" side most people still ball their eyes out when someone actually dies despite the constant non-deaths.

I see a lot of people making this point about the no deaths, and I think it can be a divisive topic, because you really need to ask yourself how impactful deaths can be, if they happen quite frequently. This is still considered a very vanilla shonen. Even in dragonball, it takes quite a few volumes until there is a proper death, and you know how that went for dbz. killing characters can ruin stories as well, especially if you want to be flexible with your writing, like oda has been. He repurposes most of his characters from past arcs, and there is a sense of continuity because of it. That being said, yes, its totally valid to say that some of the no-deaths in skypiea are pretty egregious, because its hard to think of a reason for kamakiri to live, even though he seems like a character that might never appear again anyways. in the case of skypiea, i do think he just wanted a happy ending, and that is definitely a theme in the early arcs of one piece. once a real death happens though, it will feel more impactful. Thats not to say series that have many deaths dont also have very impactful deaths, its just a matter of balancing how you can fit these deaths into your style of writing. i agree it could be a bit more mature, by having characters die frequently, but it also takes away the lightheartedness of the show. comes down to what you prefer imo. im fine with most of these characters living, because i dont care about them too much, and in viper's case (who i love as a character), i always thought they were trying to show us that he is in fact just built different, so i was fine with that. nobody can reason pell surviving to me though, that one is the worst offender :D

I JUST finished the last “episode” of Skypiea last night. This is a gift! Will edit more as I watch. To explain the Endless Vearth that keeps getting talked about, the sky islands don’t have land like the surface, but even on the surface, it is an ocean world islands and the red line. The only place with endless vearth (earth) is the moon. So yes that has been his plan all along, to go to the moon.

@@SoloRaiju Yeah Enel actually seems insane in more than one way. Have we seen any character (especially villain) with a dream as ridiculous as his? In a way, that's very Luffy-like. He didn't even let his defeat stop him and is still going for the moon. Bellamy made fun of Luffy for trying to go from the blue sea to the sky, and Enel trying to go from the sky to the moon is pretty much the same concept. It really makes you think about what could be up there.

"i don't know how one piece can top this climax" is honestly the single line that makes me the most excited out of this whole reaction, knowing that not only will it do so but continuously, multiple times on top of that. actually it's a pretty wide-spread thought for many that one piece up to this point is good, but after this arc is where it gets great to the point most people start to consider it the greatest story they experienced, period. so yeah, i'm pretty pumped that you reached this point and not only that, you loved it tremendously. because that means you'll be only loving it even more and more when oda starts spinning these sagas on the type of next level story telling that gave one piece it's legendary status.

I love One Piece so much because so many times you think like Raiju : "How can we ever top the intensity and the craziness of this arc". Then you look back an arc later and you're like : "Okay Oda, you madlad, you've done it, NOW how can we ever top the intensity and the craziness of THIS arc". It feels like a gift that keeps on giving, especially with the numerous pay-offs we get because Oda tries to tie up loose ends the best he can. Glad you're enjoying it as much as I did Raiju, you're in for a treat with Water 7 / Enies Lobby, it is my favourite saga!

It's actually interesting how Oda shows us how a lot of the more major characters from past arcs end up; They tend to get cover stories in the manga. The training arc for Koby and Helmeppo was one, as was Buggy's Adventure.

The next ten episodes (196-206) are technically filler episodes, but I think they are some of the if not the best filler in one piece. I would imagine that you would like it, and would love to see you react to those episodes!

Nice! Im glad you’re continuing. For some reason im just seeing this now. There is a fan-favorite arc coming up after this one I think should help bring in new viewers.

One thing I will say, Oda being reluctant to give his characters death even when it seems like the perfect opportunity is probably the one thing about One Piece I don't like. At least that's what I though when I first started watching this show over 10 years ago. Characters in One Piece don't die.....until they do, and trust me when they do you're going to wish they didn't.

Faking death's is imo Oda's main weakness. "There is only so many times I am gonna belive you."

One piece's fights might not be as flashy as the ones from other series, but the climax and emotions they bring is unparalleled IMO. Enel being defeated while ringing the golden bell and the result of that is so good.

Be glad there's no deaths, cause if Oda give you death you'll feel it

The no death comes from the advice of Odas editor/producer. Oda was unsure if he killed of characters, would everyone be able to read and watch it. Because most of all Oda wants that everyone that is interested to be able to consume his material. With that said his editors/producers advised that not let characters die will make it more family friendly and kids can watch.

there is a manga cover story about eneru but its pretty short since its literally just the cover panels that tell a short story (about 13-15 if i remember correctly) i think it is pretty funny and its in color too great reaction as always

Skypeia is DEFINITELY the EPITOME of One Piece. Its One Piece concentrate. A microcosm of the entire story. No other saga in the entire story encapsulates the core of One Piece better than Jaya/Skypeia. That's the pov of someone current with manga too. Not saying its the BEST arc, just that it is One Piece in its purest form. Romanticized adventure on a fantasy epic scale.

I’m okay with Oda not wanting to kill off characters. What I don’t like about it is that he constantly chooses to put them in situations that would kill them for sure. Like Pell or Papaya. It happens so often and then also often with characters whose name start with the letter P. Will of P. as dubbed by the fanbase…

yeah oda has too many fake out deaths. the few actual deaths do hit really hard tho

I have some bad news for you Solo, I’ve been checking out a lot of others reactions, around 10-12 and so far you’re the only one that didn’t immediately pick up (during the first lightning strike/attack) on the fact that Luffy’s rubber body isn’t affected by the lightning.

@@SoloRaiju I agree! That act of violence, especially coming from a kid, creates a serious cut in the scene's atmosphere. Makes the crowd, and the kid of course, hold their breath for a moment and reflect on what they are actually saying, and gives Conis the opportunity to make her decision.

I think Skypia problem is the One piece problem: is just too big, people get tiered (thats what she said)

Yeah keep in mind every single CELL of a Logia's body takes on the element of their fruit lol. (Also this is before Oda Fleshed out the Haki power system so Natural counters were a way to not make Logia's to overpowered) Basically Luffy can hit Enel because the areas Luffy hits can't turn into Electricity because Rubber prevents it from flowing.

Eneru would be on par with Warlords for the most part, but yeah there are quite a few powerhouses he would most likely lose to. Slight spoiler ahead about the power system if you care... Eneru honestly should have had armament haki which can physically damage those with devil fruits. He had observational haki which allowed him to know what was going on everywhere. If Eneru just zipped around quickly smacking luffy with armament haki, he would have won easily. Eneru's speed in his fight with Luffy was inconsistent as well, he should have been faster. But that's plot for you.

Oh yah, the reason why Skypeia wasn't up in the rankings were the fakeout deaths. Lots of them. Alabasta's count was only about 2-3, and you could even make an excuse that Robin may have saved the lot of them (Pell, Igaram, Luffy) because she didn't really wanna kill them in the first place. Skypeia had no excuse. But I still liked it though... must have been because the supposed-dead characters are already dead in my mind anyways 😂

My only thought for why Eniru isn’t killing everyone is from the saying, “it’s not the volts that kill you, it’s the amp.” Essentially high powered attacks, but the current only allows for so much shocking to occur. I do however believe that more of the good guys should have died form El Thor!

I give Oda a pass for not killing _important_ characters for a few reasons, even if I think it may have been a better narrative session for most to “stay dead”. One, whenever a character survives Oda always shows them again in some capacity… even if it’s just in cover page stories. I think one reason Oda does not often kill characters is because he likes to have them at his disposal in his world. A character can often serve a narrative better while alive than dead, even if the stakes are partly diminished as a result. There are magical moments like Wyper cheering on Straw Hat and crying learning that Nolan’s had a descendant that we would never have gotten if he had died. That being said, I think Wyper was the only one who had any business surviving this arc since he had great narrative purpose if left alive. The others should have 100% stayed dead IMO, their deaths added more to the show than them being alive unlike Wyper. Your criticisms are all super valid though and I agree with them, but on the other hand I see the merits of having some of the more important characters live. Plus Oda just loves his happy endings and lighthearted atmosphere if that wasn’t obvious. I think it suits his writing well.

Some details to remember from this arc as the series progresses: How did Eneru so accurately guess how many people would be left? Mantra and its sensory abilities. Eneru when he shifted into that fat form. More importantly, he had something wreathed around his arms and head didn't he? Eneru and Aisha's crazy abilities to hear and/or feel what is happening at far distances. These are just some small details and questions that probably seem really innocuous but try to keep them in mind

i think the skypiea arc is really good when first time watching but after that its rather dull, so the opinion of people that have watched it before is a bit skewed.

You definitely need to watch the next 10 episodes, especially if you want to know how the cliffhanger resolves, but it's also just amazing. Technically filler but could be considered Canon. I'm pretty sure oda helped write it or approved it or something like that.

Man I am so glad you're back. Gives a whole new dimension to rewatching One Piece. Edit: Ah dont worry. Characters in One Piece die, and after it is never the same. Also, you won't expect it and I doubt you'll like it.. kinda the just reward for wanting characters to die me thinks.. Personally I am always happy when they get to have a happy ending. Edit: Oh about those One Piece polls: According to serious One Piece fans, especially the very early ones, One Piece has not a one good arc. They all suck. I kinda understand how they arrived at that: Watching weekly when it's a TOEI show can be draining and frustrating. However, they are morons.

Zoro would be a problem for Luffy 100% This early in the show i'd probably say Zoro flat out wins even. And later in the show it's still a coin toss at best.
