I Became a Mom to 3 Baby Rats. (They Should've Been Food)

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

HOW I ENDED UP THE MOM TO 3 TWO AND A HALF WEEK OLD RATS.
Please listen to all my disclaimers in the video (16:50) before thinking or assuming any feeder rats/mice need to be "saved" from becoming meals. They absolutely do not need to be, snakes need food and feeder rats are typically bred in ways that would make awful pets. They have poor genetics a lot of the time and also are not socialized in a way that a pet rat would be. These rats for some reason are sold simultaniously as pets and feeders at this store, and I somehow accidentally brought the Dumbo home instead of the typical all white rat...and i just couldn't feed it. This is just my story, not a lesson on what you should do. Never take on a pet you are incapable of handling. I made sure I was capable of handling rats before announcing them to my channel because I want to be responsible. It's been 2 months and they are thriving, and I adore them endlessly.

Just some advice since now you have got pet rats 1. They need 2-5 hours of playing time (i recommend you do this in the after noon because they are most active then) 2. They are nocturnal so make sure they have LOTS of comfortable spots in their cage cause they will be playing later 3. I recommend not get a wheel because it hurts thier spine unless you get a particular type of one 4. They can NOT vomit meaning never feed them any of these foods .apple seeds .chilies .blue cheese .green bananas .green potato skin .licorice .orange juice .mango .raw artichokes .raw dry beans or peanuts .cabbadge and brussel sprouts .sweet potato .avocado .rhubarb .sticky foods .peanut butter .some sticky candy's .dried fruits 5. Get a big cage 4 they are very active 6. Keep the male in a different cage if you dont want babies 7. Get gus a male friend if you keep him in a different cage And thats it!

I love this!! I "rescued" 2 baby boy rats while I lived dorm life in college. NOT ON PURPOSE, but I was volunteering at an animal shelter in Albany NY and this kid comes in one day and puts these two ratties on the desk. They were so tiny and adorable. Apparently the kid had a pair and didn't know any better than to house a male and female together.... They did, well, what they do, and his female gave birth. The kids Dad's reaction was to feed them to the cats they had in the scrap yard they owned. Kid managed to stuff 2 in his pocket before his jerk father gave the death march, these two. Love at first sight, brought them home that night, did all the research I could, and then went shopping. Bubba and Boo were my boys! They were HUGE! I had Boo (albino dumbo) for 5 and half years. Bubba gave me 6 wonderful years (I knew he was having trouble living without his brother, but a new rat into'd just bothered him in his old age). I loved being a rat mom. and I love that with everything you could have you gave them a chance!

  • @supermac18rocks12
    @supermac18rocks125 жыл бұрын

i just feel sketched out that you're saying they're feeders but its so obvious that they're breed as dumbos which is a pet rat breed and seem to be free of respiratory issues. Even if they had good genes, feeder rats get sick often because of their environment and they seemed completely straight from a breeder. You're telling me someone who paid the money and applied for baby dumbos started breeding them as feeder rats?? I just don't think that's likely... especially coming out of a pet store that would kill to sell them and make profit off of what seems to be pure dumbos. I've had rats for a year, and mine were half dumbo half pet store rat and through all the headaches and constant cleaning i STILL struggle to keep them healthy because of their genes. I've spent a lot of money in vet bills and antibiotics, and still these "feeder rats" are healthy? That's not a compliment, as long as rats are kept clean and fed properly the genes will decide how healthy they stay. Why are you so obviously lying about them being feeders? i really don't care as long as you make the time but it almost feels like you don't agree with taking these rats on purposefully.

Just a tip, iceberg lettuce should be avoided. It's mostly water, has next to no nutrition, and can cause diarrhea. Also, 30 minutes free range daily isn't really enough. It's better than none, but the generally accepted minimum is 1 hour every day. Obviously it's okay if every once in a while it's less than an hour, but that should be the average minimum.

Speaking as someone with 15+ years of experience, there's really no difference between "fancy" rats and the white "feeders". The adults only bite and are flighty because they've never been socialized and are very often treated like products rather than living things. When socialized, baby "feeders" make just as lovely pets as the more colorful varieties. I currently have one "fancy" rat and one "feeder" who I bought to be his buddy. If anything, it's the one who was being sold as a feeder who grew up to be friendliest. He is also partially free-range, just like my other, and is trained to only go to the bathroom inside of his cage. He's not dirty in the slightest. And this is not an oddity. I've literally never known any "feeder" purchased young who did not behave just the same as ones being sold as pets. Rats are rats. It doesn't matter what color their fur is, or what their ears look like.

They are different tho. My first rat was bread specifically as a pet from a long line of quality animals. He had good genetics, was quite smart, social, soft and lived almost 3 times as long as the rats I bought from a person who breeds feeders. That feeder rat was the same breed but he had all sorts of health issues, cost me a lot in vet bills, his fur was thin and his skin had issues. He was a lot less intelligent. He lived a third the life my first rat did and he never truly warmed up to me the way my first rat did despite weeks and months and countless hours of effort. I learned my lesson. Never buying feeders as pets again.

Shay Rose a fancy rat is just a word for the domesticated grey rat. They're the same as the white ones, and both can be considered "feeders" and both are likely inbread if they come from the same company. In other words the "fancy" rats at your store are feeders, not pets.

Just some information: they only need one hammock and they don't need a feed bowl. They benefit from not having a feed bowl because they like it better if you hide their food in their tunnels nd that. Also be prepared to pay so much in vet bills, their very prone to resptory issues and tumours. They need to be handled daily. They don't need a wheel but most people get one, if you do make sure it keeps their back straight as it can damage their back and tail.

She's putting her animals online, it wouldn't be an invasion of privacy to go over how much an animal actually costs, it's actually a good for prospective pet owners to know exactly what they are getting into, most if not all animals are deceptively expensive, my coworker just dropped like $1000 in vet bills for her lizard, and my dog and cat easily cost me $3000 (just the staples not including emergency vet bills, toys or destroyed furniture) a year My cat was inherited, but my dog cost me about $1000 for supplies and initial vet bills. The rats are a little less of a financial commitment, probably under $500 upfront, and if you're thrifty usually less than $20 a month to maintain (definitely put money aside for vet bills though) my tarantula might cost me $20 a year if that. I don't want to think about how much money I've spent on my fish. Fish are not cheap. fish are not easy. fish are not for the weak.

hey taylor!! a few notes from a long-time rat owner! you’re doing a great job, but there are a few things in your video that aren’t 100% accurate! feeders, generally speaking, can be tamed. depending on how inbred/mistreated the feeder populations are, that might not be true, but generally feeders are all still norwegian rats and bred to be docile to some extent, to minimize snake injuries. i have seen many feeders be fantastic & gentle pets! the other thing i noticed is the proportion of greens to grains and the brand of oxbow! the best balanced oxbow is the adult rat formula (which is small triangles, not those blocks) or mazuri, which is used by many breeders. you’re feeding a little bit too many greens, and a little not enough oxbow. what i recommend is free-feeding the oxbow (keeping a full bowl of it in the cage at all times) and supplementing with vegetables 3x a week, not every day. it’s also best to avoid lettuce, spinach, and kale, as they can cause stomach issues! but other than that, you’re doing a good job for a first time rat momma!

Chris Dulour totally, in cases where the rats being inbred are of good stock to begin with. but some feeders are bred regardless of temperment & health, and inbreeding depression can cause malignant traits to be magnified. still, i think most feeders can be great pets.

@ Taylor Nicole Dean Hello new rat mom ♥ I'm a rat mom of two gorgeous brothers, Serious & Remus. Some hints/tips on raising rats: Something that's really important in their diet, they need meat, they are omnivores. Salt chews are bad for them, they'll overdose themselves on salt. Garlic and onion in large quantities can be bad for them, they can have SMALL amounts of chocolate, and they really need a lot of wood & mineral chew to help keep their teeth trimmed down. A really good idea is to keep puzzle type toys to keep them entertained. Eventually your adorable rat babies will figure out how to open up their cage doors, so a small lock will become necessary. Grooming (licking, nibbling, holding) your hands is a sign of affection, they're likely to do this anytime your hand is near them :) Hope this helps ♥

Personally, I wouldn't even consider giving your rats onion or garlic, as it is bad anyway. Small amounts of chocolate are okay, but it has to be very very dark. I agree with the rest though

A massive rat grain mix supplemented daily with different grains, proteins, seeds, nuts, dried veg and fruit is great. Not sure if they ship to you, but ratrations is the most fantastic website for finding the right food items for rats! Try to only feed your rats 15-20g of food each a day. Feeding them this much food daily is what makes them picky, not offering them variety! Variety is good :D Try replacing the fleece on the bottom with around 4 inches of substrate such as carefresh. Fleece can cause ammonia build ups which can easily cause respiratory infections (and they can be fatal to rats). Also, rats love to dig so it’ll allow them to do that! Feeding dry food in a bowl can make your rats lazy too (and this method is super food for an easy daily enrichment), try scattering the dry food into their substrate to support their natural behaviour of scavenging and giving them a bit more exercise! Make sure you give them a calcium, copper etc rat supplement over their food once or twice a week (much like the supplements reptiles need to avoid MBD) to support their health. Remove the shelving to again, encourage more natural enrichments. Rats are amazing climbers- and can climb vertically- so giving them shelving can make them a little lazy! Last point: add a litter tray! Use a different substrate in it. Rats LOVE to keep clean, and because of this are so so easy to litter train. They pretty much litter train themselves once given a litter tray, just make sure you avoid clumping litter as they also have a habit of eating in their litter so it can cause impaction. Enjoy your rats! They’re some of the most loyal animals you’ll ever experience owning :)

Mantis Mummy Carefresh isn’t the best bedding for rats. I know it’s advertised that way because it’s paper based, but it holds onto ammonia, as well. Carefresh has been through a scientific trial and is proven to cause respiratory issues and URI’s in rats. Dust-free paper pellets or Aspen bedding would be better alternatives than Carefresh. Anything by Kaytee is essentially horrible for rats. Other than that, great advice. Rats are super intelligent and most of my clients have had no issues litter training their rats from my Rattery lol

Hunter Taylor I’m in the UK so unaware of anything you guys have in terms of bedding aside for what I’d seen on videos! And I never like to give advice on substrates without giving a brand name, as I’ve had bedding of the same kind from brands that has been dusty and awful with one brand but lovely from another :) I can advise loads of great substrates though for people in the UK, as I often change my rats substrate up so they can experience different textures :)

As a person who has had 10 rats I do agree that they are very tumor prone. However they are also very very prone to upper respiratory infections. When they get the infection is very hard to get rid of and can be very deadly. I’m not a professional but Beta carotene is a supplement that helps treat immune deficiency. It’s a great way to prevent the infection. Another way to prevent it is humidifiers. They help add a little moisture to the air that rats need. I just thought I’d comment bc I had my fist rat die from the infection and I’ve been on top of it since.

I had a snake that refused frozen food for a few months so i sucked it up and tried live, she was really small so i bought a live pinky. Well she ended up being scared of it and acted more defensive rather than curious and wanting to eat it. So i took the mouse away to prevent further stress to both animals. My sister and mom fell in love with the mouse and begged me to hand feed it each day so i did. I fed that little mouse every 2 hours fo about 2-3 weeks and even though im an amateur he actually survived. He was the sweetest little mouse and i even taught him tricks. Well about a month ago when he was 3 months old and well established i decided to rehome him because i didnt have the time for 30+ minute playtime each day and i felt bad having him in the same room with my snakes because the snakes always smelt food and they were freaking out. My parents got sick of how bad he smelled because males mark their territory so i found new owners who had other mice and where very good at caring for them. It was a very nice experience raising that little dude. I named him fish

Elfie In Angel City bumblefoot is something that affects rats’ feet when they run on a primarily wire or hard metal floors that cause repeated trauma to the soft tissue on their feet pads. it’s actually an infection, but for rats, they’re more vulnerable to this infection by a long shot when their feet are worn down or swollen or even cut from the wire floors since they run and move so much. generally it’s better for them to have some liners or padding to protect them from injury. i think birds can have it too as you said but i think it’s a little different for them.

As a super experienced rat owner, there is only two things I see wrong with the food. Never oxbow young rat, ALWAYS adult. The young has alfalfa, and they can't digest it. Also, the greens. Lettuce is similar to cucumber, just watch how much you add. Dark greens can give gas, so watch the dark greens. Additionally, the DCN will be so helpful for yourself and the ratties. Much easier to clean. Have fun with them, you're doing great for a first time rat mom. ❤️

I feel like a lot of these comments are a little inaccurate- she takes care of her rats quite well. The diet looks very good, and the cage is a very good size for 3 rats. Male and female rats CAN be housed together, as long as they are spayed and neutered, which they are going to/have been. She gives them mental stimulation, and the only thing I see is that they should be getting a bit more running around/free range time. Rats typically need at least 90 minutes (1 hr and 1/2) of free range time, but ideally it should be 2-4 hours. Other than that, she is a great rat owner who has done and applied her research. The hate in the comments here knows no bounds. A lot of these people clearly do not have pets and do not know what they are talking about and are merely copying all the other people saying that she is "neglecting" and "not taking care of her animals." I am an owner of 2 female rats, and I feel I have a genuinely good understanding of animals. I have researched them my entire life. She is taking care of her animals just fine, and people need to stop verbally abusing her because she doesn't live up to your perfect standards. No one is perfect, but she is a phenomenal rat and animal owner. I am very sorry that these people have shown you hate because you are a great rat owner.
