The Blue Zones are areas around the world where "people forget to die".
But it turns out that much of their longevity comes from simple lifestyle shifts that we can all make ourselves.
In order to see if this was possible, I followed the Blue Zones Diet for 30 days to determine how it would change my body.
And the results were surprising.

I read a study where they went back and talked to people in the Blue Zones. They actually eat a fair amount of meat. But the questions on the Blue Zones surveys were slanted towards plant based and didn't really ask about their meat eating habits. When I lived in Japan, none of my students mentioned being vegetarian. However, many of them ate pork quite frequently.

This is my take on the blue zone recipes- they are a good base to get started. I totally understand how the recipes themselves can almost seem boring or bland, but the cool part is being able to let the recipes grow WITH you on your journey. Living and eating in a sustainable way is gonna require one to practice resourcefulness, trial and error is OK 😊 ❤ i wish everybody happy cooking!

5:17 "since food appeared to be the main component of the Blue Zones..." I think you missed the whole point of what makes the Blue Zones blue zones. Heard recently an older guy in the blue zone was asked why the younger generation in his area don't appear to be living as long. He said something like for his generation, "they had busy bodies, but still minds. Younger people have busy minds but still bodies." So even if we just focused on the food portion of the challenge you said you got bored. That is not a still mind. You're already whole food, plant-based. You're already basically doing the Blue Zone diet. But you just managed to make your mind more busy which goes against what the Blue Zone communities are about. Your focus should have been living a Blue Zone lifestyle for 30 days. This is hard in the West. You had to schedule time for friends and so forth. The Blue Zone people live in tight knit communities where you don't need to schedule community interactions. You should be having friends and family over when cooking - not just you experimenting with new recipes that you and your wife will eat. Where are the older people, the grandparents, the kids, the nieces and nephews running around. But yeah, food is the "main component of the Blue Zones". Maybe if you consider food as the glue that binds people together, not as a way to escape boredom or making falafels that don't fall apart, it could be the main component.

Thanks for watching and for your thoughtful response! You make a lot of great points and I totally see where you're coming from. I love the quote you mentioned too. I hope more viewers see it. Completely understand your point with the lifestyle. Being a nutrition channel, I did specifically title it as "Diet" given the focus on that. As you saw, I did my best to incorporate the other aspects (walking, being outside, making time with friends/community). For what it's worth Gab and I did change up our meal habits and made sure to make it more of a mindful, thoughtful meal experience instead of having the tv on, laptops around, etc. To be honest, I wish I could've had my grandparents, siblings, and parents around for this experiment. Unfortunately we all live so far away from each other that I couldn't make it happen. It is sad, and I wish it were possible. But I had to make do with the situation I'm in. Completely agree with your point at the end, and I did my best to echo that at the very end by putting the emphasis on cooking for, and with, friends/family to try this out, and not doing it in isolation (my very last line of the video). It's not just the food; it's the community around it. I don't think we should discount the nutritional aspect (especially since so much of the Blue Zones content focuses on that and it does have a major role, can't be denied), but I agree with you in your final statement and I echoed it in my own at the end. I do see your point of having more emphasis on that though throughout the video. Thanks again for taking the time to write this! I hope you see where I'm coming from and I do appreciate and agree with your thoughts. Best of luck in your journey!

This is extremely food oriented. It is all about a cook book. In addition to eating out of somebody's interpretation of what they eat, live the life. Do they have a TV and internet? Do they go to bed at dark and wake at sunset? Do they live on the floor? Are they actively involved with two generations before them or after them? Do they pray every day, and see the effects of God all around them in nature. Is God a philosophy, or a slice out of your time to get the job done? Please allow his light to shine upon you. It is not a diet, it is the whole thing!,

Thanks for watching! There tends to be a misconception about the definition of "plant-based" where it gets labeled into the fully vegan category. Essentially, it's any diet where plants are the primary and majority of foods consumed, and meals are based around them while animal products are either non-existent or eaten sparingly. For example, even though the Mediterranean Diet isn't 100% plant-based or vegan, it's still considered to be a plant-based diet by Harvard Medical School. The Blue Zones state that each region eats anywhere from 95-100% plant-based, which qualifies them all as plant-based diets. But you're right, only Loma Linda is fully vegetarian/vegan. Here's a great resource that goes in-depth: www.bchd.org/docs/bzp/blue_zones_food_guidelines.pdf Thanks again for watching and commenting, I really do appreciate it! 🙌 Hope you have a great day!

Yeah, yeah, yeah! Been looking forward to this one and super enjoyed hearing about your results and listening to your recommendations. That vegetable commercial though 😂😂😂 The comedy you are folding into these videos is greatly admired and appreciated! When I was listening to you describe your results, I found myself nodding along to several of the points you were making: digestion around beans, boredom, blandness, and wanting to zhuzh up with some sauces and spices. While I haven’t (yet) done a BZ challenge, this is in general some familiar feelings found when feasting of foods of the whole plant based type when my goals have been centered around “super healthy”. So I like the adjustments you mentioned. When you mentioned at the end that this could see this being a low-pressure lifestyle that could lead to great health outcomes, that for me is my where a get those warm fuzzies when thinking about the Blue Zones. And the last takeaway at the end (asking yourself how doing the BZ activities makes you feel when you stop and reflect back), such a good takeaway and also one that can be applied broadly to many life scenarios. When thing I am still curious about, and maybe 30 days was not enough to make a huge difference, other than some fatigue, which you mentioned might have been just due to increased workout volume/load, did you notice any other changes in regards to working out/physique? I assume you were able to progress as normal? Thanks so much for putting out another awesome video into the world!

Thanks so much for this Darin! I really, really appreciate your thoughts and that this resonated with you so much! ☺ To answer the question, I think it worked fine for my workouts/physique for the month. But to be honest I'd need to go longer to really see how it impacted strength and performance beyond the 30 days. My assumption is I would need to add more higher-protein options as well as more healthy fats in addition to the beans to really make that sustainable for muscle-building and high-performance. The recipes as written fuel people with consistent movement, but not necessarily high-performance athletes. So I'd assume some swaps would need to be made!

@@theplantbasedteacher nice! I’ve decided organic flour is a must. Mass farmed flour involves glyphosate to make picking easier… I wonder if long term exposure is a good idea. There is a local flour mill where I can get the entire wheat berry stone ground which also requires mixing in at least 60% bread flour. Lately I’ve been buying high extraction wheat flour from Central Milling which has enough ash I use it by itself.

Thanks for sharing! Any time we cut out entire food groups and eliminate dozens, sometimes hundreds of foods, it's possible to feel better, given that there may be certain foods within that group that cause discomfort, but not necessarily all. The best way to hone in on that would be to work with a Registered Dietician who can determine which specific foods are causing undesirable reactions!

Maybe if we in the USA stop giving more value to money and things over people, we might develop a healthy society where profit for big food manufacturers and big pharmaceutical companies doesn’t outweigh the health of the citizens. We’re a country that is devolving with processed junk foods making us dumber and sicker. And the worst part is that we are exporting our bad eating habits to the rest of the world. AMERICAN COMPANIES ARE A THREAT TO OUR VERY EXISTENCE AS A SPECIES. We forget what it’s like to be in nature and enjoying life. Instead we’re stuck to our screens and gadgets. We don’t even socialize anymore. We just send text messages.

Dan Buetner has stated publically that, for environmental conserns, he would never endorse a meat heavy diet. The book is nonsense. Eat fatty lamb and a ton of bacon, as they do in the blue zones.

The blue zone theory is highly selective and focusses on plant based diet as the link to longevity to push that particular agenda, ignoring the healthy people confounder - blue zone eat less processed and junk foods, exercise more, have a stronger sense of community, care more for the elderly, and do eat plenty of meat, fish, and saturated fat both eaten directly and used for cooking. One example, Pork is huge in Asian and Mediterranean diets. Imagine any Sardinian, or other Italian, or Greek, without pork, lamb, salami, proscuttio, pancetta, sausages, bolognese sauce, for which Italy is culinarily most famous together with pizza, which has cheese, is beef. Skewed and selective information to to push a narrative.

There is no such thing as Blue Zones as it is a made up word by Dan Buettner, a man with no MD or Ph.D, and not a scientist. Wikipedia says he is a storyteller. Santa Claus was also a storyteller. As a slick and clever businessman Buettner sold his Blue Zones business LLC to the Adventist money making business for 78 million. The Blue Zones book is not accredited by anything as far as reliable information goes.

I dug deep into this blue zone phenomena and found out a few troubling issues completely misleading data with it. First off, it's finally being discovered that many people in these zones that claimed to be much older than they actually were which will COMPLETELY alter these numbers of higher average age, the data in these areas also are not very accurate. Secondly, I saw an individual that actually went to these blue zone areas and they are not NEARLY as plant based as they make it out to be, they do consume more meat than are led on to believe. This makes a lot more sense to me since I also discovered that research has proven that our digestive system absorbs protein and nutrients from animal based products at an exponentially higher rate than with plant based products! Don't believe the hype with mostly plant based. If you want to live longer, based on my heavy research, you want to follow these key points. 1. Exercise 2. Whole food consumption, mostly meat, make sure it's clean meat, no antibiotics, no hormones, 100% grass fed beef, pasture raised poultry/pork or wild caught fish. 3. Some veggies, stay with organic, mostly cruciferous, but veggies are not mandatory. 4. Good sleep. 5. Low stress. 6. Minimal exposure to environment toxins. 7. Periodic fasting.

  • @alabanz

@@alabanz Then you are reading bogus studies who are funded by anti meat agencies. Fun Fact: There are 7 essential nutrients found in animal based products that you DO NOT get from plant based products! Fun Fact #2: There is NOT ONE nutrient that you can get from plant based products that you CAN'T get from animal based products! So based on these 2 facts would make your claim by these "studies" you mention nothing but bullshit. These same kind of bogus studies were the same type of studies that tried to claim that red meat was responsible for causing cancer, these false reports were based from 2 studies where one study was simply a "questionaire" and the other study they combined red meat with "HIGHLY" processed meats. There hasn't been ONE study done on just clean red meat by itself...there is a reason for that because they most likely know how the result will come out which would be not only does red meat NOT cause cancer but is a cancer fighting whole food that also helps with inflammation and is LOADED with nutrients. But do what YOU believe and have all of the plant based products you want, I'll stick with what I know works from my own proven experiment which has worked out REALLY well!

The 2 faced tone of this production is embarrassing. 1. Thumb nail- sad face A thumb nail is the definitive tone of the video, yet most of his soft spoken manipulation describes an "experiment" yielding mostly positives. Obviously then, that thumbnail was for clicks. Apparently he's not above cashing in on a basic fact of human psychology ; "negatives" get attention. ...Dude, I . C. U. 2. Beans problem ; pretty sure he knows that gut microbiome needs time to proliferate to be able to digest the new complex carbs. But he uses that fake 'dumb down" voice to cite that as a problem LOL. 3. He felt physically bad - anyone with basic post secondary education can figure out through reading that the "feel bad" part of any healthy diet is it's DETOXIFYING EFFECTS- where headaches etc are signs of cells excreting toxins. 4. The foods were simple YET also boring? He's never heard of seasonings? Pretty sure he ALSO knows that spices and herbs - which are CHOCK FULL OF ANTIOIDANTS and PHYTOPHENOLS - ARE ALSO part of the blue zone philosophy and science . But he does feigns ignorance with that clueless tone. yet again. HE KNOWS these are NOT REAL NEGATIVE.S..just a chimera of justifications for that THUMBNAIL. A fake precaution...of probably the planet's most healthy and sustainable way of eating ROTFL.

    @theplantbasedteacher

Hi there, thanks for giving my video a chance! Since you took the time to write out your comment, I'd like to respond to your critiques for clarity sake: 1. The thumbnail isn't meant to be deceptive. Here was my thought process: I thought it'd be cool to look old on the thumbnail (since the Blue Zones is all about living to 100), so I downloaded an app to make that happen. I took a bunch of different photos with different poses, faces, etc. And this one made me look the oldest/clearest (the other ones just kind of looked normal, and I don't have photoshop skills). Literally that's that's the story of the thumbnail, not the hypothesis you provided. I don't intend to manipulate people...I don't have time for that. Sorry if you felt it was deceptive but that wasn't the intent. Hopefully this provides clarity. 2. I do know that the gut takes time to adjust! But it's very surprising how many people don't. I've talked to so many people through my time who switch to a more plant-based diet and then are surprised when this adjustment happens. This has taken me aback and made me realize how many things people DON'T know about plant-based nutrition/diets. While I knew it was coming, someone new to the whole program might not, so I wanted to make them aware that this is common. One thing I've learned is that I can't assume everything the audience may, may not, or "should" know; many of my viewers are coming at this as complete beginners and are unaware of things like this. And a sudden roadblock like that may turn them off to the whole thing if they're not prepared. If that's not you, then fine! But an explanation for those who are new to this lifestyle isn't "dumbing down", it's just being clear for those who are still learning and don't know what to expect. 3. I have heard of seasonings, and use them all the time 😉The point I made in the video was that, in my opinion, some recipes needed more spices and seasonings for more flavor, so I added more to suit my tastes. In addition, I made the point that I have other recipes I enjoy eating regularly that I missed, and that any time you restrict yourself to a single website/cookbook/etc that will be the case. The goal of that point is to encourage others to use this but don't feel the pressure to rely on it 100% if they have other recipes they're missing out on. 4. You're right, I had a very positive experience on The Blue Zones Diet! I loved it and it was fantastic. That being said, there are roadblocks/issues that people may face when trying something for the first time. My goal with these experiments is to address all aspects, even ones that are small negatives. You'd be surprised how many people try something like this out and then say "Hey you said this was perfect but my stomach hurt/it needed more seasoning/I felt weird" etc etc. As a teacher, I'm trying to prepare the viewer for as many outcomes as possible. So if they try this and experience some gut adjustment, let's say, they know it's part of the process and not a reason to quit such a healthy diet. Again, it wasn't tied to a "deceptive" thumbnail (again, just tried to look old). In my other experiment videos I always mention a few negatives, even if minor throughout an overall positive experience, because I know that each person will have a unique experience and some things may bug them that don't necessarily bug me. Nothing's perfect, and the experiences people face are extremely varied (based on all those I've interacted with). Overall, I try to provide a more balanced picture for the general population so they can have a clear picture. It sounds like my content/tone/delivery isn't your cup of tea. And that's totally fine! I know I can't make everyone happy. But I do want to be clear that I'm not trying to manipulate people like was insinuated here. Hopefully this provides clarity on my thought process, for whatever it's worth. I hope you find what you're looking for in terms of content. Thanks for giving it a shot and have a great day!
