I asked people in Singapore if they want to visit Hong Kong now|Free Air Ticket POV

In the Hello Hong Kong campaign by Hong Kong Gov't, there are 500,000 free airline tickets to Hong Kong to be given away to the tourist from all around the world. The Singapore campaign had started (and also ended unfortunately) today - let's see if the free tickets can attract the people in Singapore to visit Hong Kong and their views on it!
btw - I didn't manage to get the free ticket :((

Not surprised by the results. As Singapore is becoming more diversify, many Hong Kong eateries are being set up here in the past years. And moreover, it is only free on the air tickets without the surcharge or tax inclusive. If there are free tickets for Thailand - Bangkok, I believe most of us will be very interested.

The thing is that most of us in Singapore have been to Hong Kong and for some of us, quite a number of times. Rather than the attractions HK offers, it's more about the food. That's why we rather go to other countries where there are more sceneries to look at. The free air-tickets won't be enough to entice the locals to go there and like the ladies you've interviewed on the streets, accommodation is the main cost for the whole trip.

HK is no longer the same before as compared to the early 80s, 90s to what HK is now. The best period to visit HK is in the early 80s to 90s where we see Hk as a backdrop in blockbuster HK movies. So much has changed now under a different management.

I brought my family to HK during 2018 Dec. It was before Covid and the big protest. The experience was on the extreme end, my family finds the younger generation were generally much more polite then the “boomer gen”. I’m almost a boomer gen and HK was a destination that the wife and I always wanted to go when we were young, maybe due to watching tv shows and movies. My son would love to visit HK again as a tourist but not my daughter and my spouse. The shopping experience was okay in most shops but can be better. I’d rather do repeated visits to Taiwan and Japan. Sometimes it’s not about the glitzy buildings and malls, to me it’s the experience and people.

Hi Irene~ I saw this news and was kinda surprised coz in my opinion Hong Kong is still a fun place to visit though I have never been to Hong Kong before. I have tried to work out travel plans to Hong Kong before COVID but every time when I do that, I compare the cost of plane tickets + accommodations to that of nearby countries e.g. Taiwan, Seoul, Thailand, I ended up visiting those other countries & gave up on Hong Kong because accommodations is really more expensive than those other countries.

I believe just Singaporeans have the image of HK as very loud and not so clean, and chaotic place as I believe, comparing to Singapore. However, I can say the food in HK is not only cheaper but also has lots of amounts! I used to live in HK for a year, and now missing my friends, foods and attractions in HK. Of course, I am missing Macao too(I frequently go to Macao by ferry from Central Ferry Terminal)

Hmmm…. it’s not just the free ticket that matters. Time is limited and we just came out of the pandemic and that traveling restrictions have just been lifted not too long ago, so there are lots of choices. I guess it’s a question of what comes first given the limited time and resources and also partly becoz most Singaporeans have been to HK already and for some, even multiple times. So, to make the money worth every single cent, you probably need to compare and work out your budget before booking the trip.

Accessibility is pretty ok, signages are easy to understand for any English or Mandarin speaker. Service staffs are very rude though, even in those malls. Always impatient and snappy. Overall, it looks like a Singapore in the 1990s, and would prefer neighbouring cities like Zhuhai or Shenzhen over HK.

Greetings from HK. I quite agree on the comments that accommodation in HK is too expensive a free tix doesn’t seem attractive. Regular tix from SG - HK is not very expensive anyway. Also the part for rude people: yes! Rude people and scammers are rather common even HKers are bothered by them. But I’d argue there are still many many polite and passionate people in HK willing to help or whatever. Maybe young people! It depends on who you choose to interact. Don’t be afraid to talk with local youngsters, I am sure the exp will be much better than dealing with rude uncles and aunties 😂 they may also give you travellers tips like cost of taxis or what scams to avoid. Maybe I am biased but there are indeed some bad influences from China even Hkers are not used to. A coin has two sides I m sure Singaporeans so smart you get it.

Wanted to go big buddha but the cable car was closed for maintenance till march 21 😥, didnt want to take the bus up... Disney is closed every Tues and Thurs till further notice. Surrounding disney hotels very quiet. Hardly any cars on the roads. Maybe because I went on a Tuesday. Went to sai kung for yum cha and seafood, pretty crowded. More pple are out on the streets now but if compared to 4 years ago, it's way lesser. Just have to give hk more time to get bk into biz, the airport is not fully functional yet, still a lot shops closed. I love the HK scene in the 80s and 90s, before 97. Very vibrant and exciting then - the noise, the smell, the people, the food, the free atmosphere, plenty of opportunities and many things to look forward to. Just like New York. Now? Just another city with nothing special to offer compared to Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing...etc. People there seem burdened and lost especially the middle aged and elderlies. The young people tend to care less about their futures - nonchalant attitudes. I miss the old Hong Kong!

There have been some negative comments about the free airline tickets offer in Hong Kong, particularly related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some people have expressed concerns about the safety of travel and the potential risks of spreading the virus, especially if large numbers of people take advantage of the free tickets. Others have criticized the government for prioritizing tourism over public health. Additionally, there have been concerns about the environmental impact of the initiative, with some people arguing that it will contribute to air pollution and carbon emissions. Finally, some people have questioned the long-term impact of the free airline tickets offer on Hong Kong's tourism industry, arguing that it may not be sustainable in the long run and could lead to a boom-and-bust cycle.

The present day HK is just not attractive for tourism. Smallish Disneyland, old Ocean Park, closed down tourist attractions like Jumbo Restaurant and many famous old eateries shutdown by pandemic. Add to that many youngsters or anti-China government citizens whom take out their anger on Mandarin speakers with rude and unfriendly treatment, plus the feeling of a city down on its luck with no future after their HK laws are changed to appease Beijing. Tough to see HK getting as many tourists as in the 80s or 90s, even with free flight tickets. It's just not the same HK of the vibrant and energetic days pre 1997 handover.
