Peak fighting, period. FGC says they love SCII *more* than SC on the Dreamcast, the fighting game that was seriously considered for GotY (not fighting game of the year, just GotY, period) when it's immediate competition was VF3, Tekken 3 and SFIII3S, but they always pretend it's a 'lesser' Tekken even though it controls better and is easier to learn despite the characters having *more* moves than Tekken characters (over half the cast of SCVI had more moves than T7 King). It's sad.

I agree with the guy who said MK2. Even if it's not as deep as modern games, if you experienced it, it was a social phenomenon that has no equal in the modern era of online battles. To be at the arcade with 20 other guys around the machine doing a fatality that you learned about on usenet was just an experience that no one in the later generations can even understand. Also soul calibur 2 was great for similar reasons, but it also had the depth that MK lacked.

I think out of the older MK games, that was the game. And if you go to an arcade, you're most likely are going to see a MK2 machine before you'll see a 3, Ultimate 3, and heck, the first one. Agree with SC2 as well.

It might've been easier if he just had an art board and drew 5 empty squares next to each tier, and printed out the box art of different games. He would've had to pick out the games and you wouldn't get wild picks like SFxT and Cross Tag Battle. But, it definitely would've saved some hassle. Not only did it look way better and have more moves, levels, and characters in general, but it introduced Kitana, Mileena, and Shao Kahn, which was pretty huge. Expanded the lore a decent bit compared to the first one. I'd agree UMKIII is better in basically every way, but MKII was pretty amazing when it first came out.

This was cool! It definitely shows what the general audience thinks of games, when a game would get placed high then immediatley get swapped down or vice versa.

I really like the format of doing a community tier list like this where people can add any stuff and then eventually can just switch places of two games.

I loved MKx / mkXL as well. It brought be back into the franchise. The pace was so aggressive and nutty. Even newer players could pick it up and go crazy against each other.

I'm not too involved in this community but maybe it's one of those games that most people enjoy, but few would call their #1 favorite?

The way the tier list organized itself was setup so it wasn't an objective way of seeing it... but it DID make a fun way of doing it that was good enough

My vote for the GOAT is Killer Instinct 2013. I love it because you constantly are using your brain even on defense when in a combo for the combo breaker meta. Instinct mode was also fun and unique per character. There is basically 0 down time in a match and I love it for that.

lmao, I love Breakers Revenge but it actually secretly does have a XFactor style comeback mechanism. You do more damage at low health and when you haven't gotten a hit in. You even get damage and defense buffs for losing rounds and games.

Street Fighter EX or Bloody Roar not being there hurt me a bit. Also no Virtua Fighter, damn shame.

True, it is always 98 or 2002 here, but it is also something I’ll never agree with as 02 is basically a great roster (not going into balance) accompanied by some of the worst presentation ever made, with some of the worst looking stages and hud in the series and a weak ost. As a MK fan since I was a kid, it really is true in terms of competitive fighting games. MK will always be just a fun fighting game for me and then as a kid, I always just enjoyed the lore especially when NRS introduced their open world konquest mode in Deception. MK9 was awesome because you saw the return of 2D in the series but the game was highly broken and so was MKX. It’s like people forget how many people hated MKX when it was a thing. My favorite MK is the new one. I think in terms of mechanics, it’s the best MK they’ve released and I know a lot of people will disagree but I’ve been there and watched the game and scene develop for awhile. MK and really NRS games in general have never had longevity been incredibly successful in the competitive scene. They’ve always just done really good with sales because of the casual fan getting the game for nostalgia or flash.

As true as that is BBTag has a really nice niche. It's a really easy to get into tag team fighter for new players. I got so many people to start playing fighting games in general by playing BBTag with them. Also it has another kind of niche in that there aren't that many modern tag team games that are fun to just pickup, and play with people that are decent at other fighting games, but don't really have a tag team game they are good at. I really like BBTag even though it's got it's issues for sure. @@zakils6844

Super Turbo. You don' need to ask those newbs anything. It was released in 1993 and even today, is still all the meta most players will need. Think about that for a second, a fighting game released 30+ years ago that still stands the test of time. Amazing music, graphics, game play, characters, and the last real SF game before it got a bit weird. Simply amazing to be a SF addict and 15 yrs old when this came out.

@@richterbelmont5506 Oh just the music, characters, it deviated a lot from the original 4 games which retained a familiar running theme. Then alpha came along, which I really liked in all honesty, but it was different. Ex plus (3D)version was interesting too. Even SF4 was amazing in many ways, but I don't think anything can beat being a kid in the 90s and experiencing those special years of SF2 from 1990-1994/95. And the console ports too, most of us went to the arcades to play, and the home console ports were always exciting to follow. Always dreaming of the arcade perfect conversion. Those early years man, just so special. So many things aligned for a lot of players, one of the few good things about being oldISH. If you were there you knew & felt it.

​@@josefsad1502 I worked for the devs of KI, worked on KI GOLD. Got the job for being a SF2 and KI expert :) KI was amazing too, I played that the most cos it was a single player show off game in the arcades, loads of cool glitches too. got the job when they asked me what was the highest combo I could do, I said 51 with orchid then recited it from memory and they were like wtf. Cool fact, hardly ANYONE at rare could play fighting games well and the testers mostly hated it because they're were not fighting game fanatics. ki1 was not a very good Human Vs Human game though, it was a single player show off game, you get two good ki players to play and the game is a turtle fest. ki2 is a much better human vs human gameplay wise, but the first was more special IMO.

I want to see something like this for every game genre

Killer Instinct 1 was the best time to be an arcade fanatic and Virtua Fighter 2 was something to experience when it came out as well.
