I Applied New Veneer To A Laminate Top

Rubbing a pencil on paper over the chipped veneer to get the right size patch is so simple yet so genius!

Even more ingenious is the way he shaped the damaged area to the patch and not the other way around. This greatly lowers the effort to get a perfect fit.

1000% I appreciate the warmer wood tones. I have a hard time picturing the washed/grayed/driftwood/beachy looking finish on these midcentury pieces. As someone else mentioned, your technique for transfering the shape needed for a veneer patch is a great tip!

It looks so much better now. I'm not sure why you're so concerned about the people who don't like that colour. Yes, others are entitled to their opinions but that shouldn't dictate what colour you use. You do you, as the saying goes. I don't actually like that colour either but I think it suits the mid century style of furniture better.

I totally agree but, as I mentioned, that brownie/orange tends to suit those mid century style pieces more than the modern trendy stain colours, especially when they're being restored as apposed to a modern painted finish like most furniture flippers would do. Plus, I think people wanting mid century style furniture would probably want the more traditional colours. Sorry for the long rant.

ORANGE-WOOD MCM LOVERS UNITE!! *I* am here for it!! Once you've lived thru 5 decades of furniture trends, you get to pick your faves, and I'm all in on this exact sort of piece, have collected a house full of same ilk of Mid century pieces. My house has hardwood floors with a “gunstock” finish. The warm color is comforting, sort of like pumpkin spice in the fall. I like the birds singing in the background. That’s the fun about working on furniture projects in the garage!

I like the redder, orangy colors also. What was once sometimes referred to as "gunstock" was my favorite. The stained and shellacked brown/orange of 95% of 1950s knotty pine and later red oak is unappealing. Great job as always.

This is a plan for the future for me. Buy a house with a view onto a lake or a forest where it’s nice and quiet, and to sit outside and restore unloved furniture. Not rushing, just enjoying the process. There’s something about working with wood and all the sounds of sanding and hand tools that are just so appealing and relaxing.

I've been watching your work for a while now, but haven't ever left a comment until now because your comments about coloring made me think ok, people may not like the orange'y color and that's fine; then they can not buy deep-colored wood. My taste tends toward the timeless, traditional style and in the years I've been renovating my house in that vein I've come across oh so many trends. You mentioned the washed-out, driftwood look so many people like. Yeah, that goes with the farmhouse style that's been trendy over the last few years that makes people dry brush chalk paint on everything before slapping "eat pray love" on it in a mix of block lettering an that silly, overly flowy script that's almost impossible to read. But here's the thing (in my mind): they're trends. Just like tile countertops, shag carpet, or resin river tables, the farmhouse style will pass. And when it does they'll be spending serious money redecorating and redesigning because some pretentious 20-something on social media decided the new MUST-DO thing is to plaster moss all over your walls and paint it pink. But when you see a piece of furniture that transcends trends and looks amazing on display for decades, it's almost always finished in these rich, deep wood colors you show here. So if people don't like the color? Fine, don't buy it then; it's not for you. But you shouldn't ever feel like apologizing because others feel the need to remark whenever a creator posts content that doesn't revolve around their tastes.

I like it. I often like the slightly paler tones, and that certainly seems to be popular at the moment - really, I suppose what I like best is the natural colour of the wood. But some pieces of furniture look just as good or better in the warmer coloured wood, and anyway, you were the one doing the work and looking at the piece, so it was your choice as to what you did. As always, I appreciate the way you make your videos. They're well-filmed and narrated, as well as being informative (and, of course, calming!). And I appreciate how you explain what you're doing and why you' chose to do it that way rather than another way (I presume to pre-empt anybody saying you should have done it another way!). I always hit "like" before I even start watching your videos, because I know I'll enjoy them.
