I ANNIHILATED Ubisoft and They Deserved It

On this video we are watching and reacting to the trailer of Assassin's Creed Shadows. This trailer has created a lot of controversy and backlash with people attacking and insulting each other over the protagonist being a Black African man. What is the real history about this? Let's talk about it.

Many people are getting really upset about this game, particularly in Japan as Japanese gamers are feeling left out when compared to previous Assassin's Creed games which always features a protagonist from the same are as the setting.
Even though these feeling as absolutely justified, it's also important to not overswing and reach incorrect conclusions such as some people mentioning that there was never a Black African man in Feudal Japan, which is historically incorrect.
Let's talk about Yasuke, let's watch the trailer and see if the way they represented him in this game is in any way coherent with the historical record and most importantly let's ask the hardest question of all...Was Yasuke a samurai?
This black man called Yasuke was given a stipend, a private residence, etc., and was given a short sword with a decorative sheath. He is sometimes seen in the role of weapon bearer.
Shiba Yoshikane in 1553 - son of the previous and soon to be the next de jure lord of Owari, before Nobunaga ran him out of town.
Lord Buei the Younger fled directly from his fishing spot on the river to Nagoya, dressed only in a bathrobe, to call on Nobunaga’s help. Accordingly, Nobunaga assigned him a stipend sufficient to maintain a retinue of two hundred men and installed him in the Tennōbō temple.
Saitō Dōsan. Recent research suggest this story is inaccurate, but I’m just demonstrating how Ōta Gyūichi uses the word.
The original family name of Saitō Yamashiro Dōsan was Matsunami. He was a native of the Western Hills of Yamashiro Province. One year, he left the Kyoto area for the provinces and called on the help of Nagai Tōzaemon of Mino, who granted him a stipend and assigned auxiliaries to him.
Nobunaga remonstrating Ashikaga Yoshiaki in 1573 for not giving out stipend properly.
Item [3] You have failed to make appropriate awards to a number of lords who have attended you faithfully and have never been remiss in their loyal service to you. Instead, you have awarded stipends to newcomers with nothing much to their credit. That being so, the distinction between loyal and disloyal becomes irrelevant. In people’s opinion, this is improper.
...
Item [7] Men who have given you steadfast and blameless service but have not been awarded a stipend by you find themselves in dire need in Kyoto. They turned to Nobunaga with a heavy heart. If I were to say a few words in their behalf, they assumed, then surely you would take pity on them. On the one hand, I felt sorry for them; on the other, I thought it would be in the interest of the public authority (kōgi no ontame; sc., to your benefit). So I put the matter of their stipends before you, but you did not assent in even one case. Your hard-heartedness, excessive as it is, puts me out of countenance before these men. I refer to the likes of Kanze Yozaemon [Kunihiro], Furuta Kahyōe, and Ueno Kii no Kami [Hidetame].
Nobunaga to his own "companions" (think of Alexander’s foot and horse companions) in 1575 because he was feeling generous that day and had just given a bunch of cloth to a beggar and then felt like also rewarding his men who were supposedly moved to tears by the former act of generosity.
All of Nobunaga’s companions, those of high as of low rank, also shed tears. Each and every one of his companions had his stipend increased, and it goes without saying that they felt fortunate and thankful. It is because Nobunaga was so compassionate, everyone felt, that the heavens shed their blessings upon him and that the fortunes of his house would long endure.

Let's get this out of the way. That Sachi lady isn't a historian. They credited her as being one of the lead historians. but her entire academic background consists of nothing but writing about sexual interactions between Buddhist monks and other men in feudal Japan. Beyond that, she has done sweet f all that gives her any relevance to this era. That speaks volumes about what this game is gonna end up being, and it isn't good...

The crazy thing is - they DO their research. Ubisofts teams for historic research know what they are doing. The problem is that they dont decide what gets into the game. Another example would be the Netflix series Barbarians, where the historic advisers quit in the making of Season 2 because it infuriated them so much how hard they were ignored and how much bs the directors threw into it anyway, against any advice. I wouldnt be surprised if many people left since the early years of AC, but i dont doubt it that they still KNOW what is correct and what not. Inserting agendas and slobbering investors coqs just has a higher priority, especially after "Vikings: The Game" was so successful.

As someone mentioned, one way might be to omit the Japanese woman from the main character; UBI chose Yasuke instead of the Japanese samurai because he could not relate to the Japanese (a statement made in a deleted interview). A Japanese woman named Naoe was also provided, but the life of a female ninja is harsher than that of a samurai, and is rarely praised. She is a shadowy figure whose name is difficult even to leave in history, and her situation is always complicated. What is the contradiction that it is impossible to create a male Japanese samurai and possible to create a female ninja who is more difficult to portray? Frankly, I think they want to see an unrealistic black samurai in full armor wetting his cudgel with Japanese blood.

My favorite story about a Kunoichi based out of Kyoto who snuck into a regional warlord's local holdings disguised as a washerwoman. She then found the room of records and "cooked the books", and stole a small amount of gold each time. After a couple years of this she (or someone) sent a message to the Shogun that the regional warlord was skimming taxes. When the Shogun audited the local warlord, they found it to be "true", and the regional warlord was publicly beheaded for treason. I learned this story when visiting a museum on "ninja history" (and they openly admitted there was only so much they could know). They made a huge emphasis on the fact that although many shinobi were assassins, some of them specialized in using and manipulating the legal system to do the assassination for them. Even if the story isn't true per se, it was meant to convey the idea that the shinobi engaged in all kinds of complex statefare, espionage, book-keeping, eco terrorism... anything to complete their goals.

The commentary about Iga commented on by the owner of this video deserves a special mention. He really researches it well. Iga was a sphere of influence created by a group of people called “AKU-TOU(悪党)stray or Outcast(difficult to translate)” who gathered together in opposition to the power of the Samurai and ruled over a vast area of land as an independent council group. As this ruling system was established, they honed his own espionage skills and eventually came to serve Samurai rulers throughout Japan. Among these was one of the most famous ninja, Hattori Hanzo, who served the Tokugawa family. As you know, Hattori Hanzo was not only a samurai of the Tokugawa family, but also a chieftain of the ninja. Together with Momochi and Fujibayashi, they are known as the three great "high glade class ninja" of Iga. Iga was not a secret hiding place, but a strategic point of transportation in Japan. The Oda family sent an army to control the area, but they were resourceful enough to defeat the Oda forces on their own(First Tensho Iga Rebellion). However, their rebellion incurred the wrath of Nobunaga, and the Iga were eventually destroyed in a terrible battle known as the Second Tensho Iga Rebellion. I'm really glad you're looking into this background properly. It doesn't seem like UBI did as much research as he did.

They probably did, it’s likely they just scaled it down for gameplay purposes . Think about it reasonably for a second, most game devs are just people who love making games, and if you were offered and all expenses paid trip to an exotic location would you say no? It’s extremely doubtful they were being sinister about it.
