I Am Mother - Behind The Scenes
Фильм және анимация
Director Grant Sputore on how he brought his feature film debut I Am Mother to life.
Sputore, who came up with the story alongside writer Michael Lloyd Green, reveals how he was able to storyboard close to the entire film thanks to previsualisation technology.
It also helped his approach to lighting and colour design with cinematographer Steve Annis, and production design with Hugh Bateup.
Sputore also explains how the robot Mother was brought to life through a “wildly collaborative” effort.
This was thanks to voice actor Rose Byrne, and the Weta Workshop team, namely Tim Domett who puppeteered Mother’s face, and Luke Hawker who both created the suit and did the physical performance.
I Am Mother is streaming worldwide on Netflix.

I totally loved the film. And one thing that I really didn't even think about in it is the production cost. And god oh god was I surprised that this film was so cheap in comparison to other sci-fi movies. Your team must have been composed of magicians. You know that the film is perfect when you don't think about neither VFX nor about money. The script is incredible, actors are perfect and compositions were just on spot, a shoutout to your DP. You, my friend, are going places and it will be a pleasure to see your future works!

Just watched it. Loved it. Great story. I love fact they used practical effects (guy in the suit) instead of CGI because it adds that bit of realism that tends to be so much more immersive. I wanna see more.

@@carltondixon9970 I totally agree with you. The movie ended in a way that gave us closure and satisfaction. Also left us room to envision the events that follow in our own way. Making a secondary film may not exceed those expectations.

I believe that some things are better left unsaid. The end of Inception is amazing because we don't know if the top will fall over or not and it keeps us guessing. I love this movie and its ending plays a big part in that, I believe it would hurt it if they make a part 2.
with out a doubt, one of the best movies of 2019. Crazy good.
This was such a good movie. The first 10 minutes of the little girl growing up was surprisingly moving for me. And wow, that suit is incredible. I love how the smile lights were constantly 'shaking' to really make Mother seem like she's constantly engaged and processing information. Admittedly, there were large chunks of the film where I felt frustrated/in disbelief of how both Daughter and Mother acted, but the ending really ties everything together and in hindsight their actions make a lot of sense.

@@yes-qi5rx it would be great to see how the child who grow up and instead at the end shooting the mothere and the woman coming in between mothere and daughter it would be breath the mothere quandary daughter to have continued the bond and family and to see how the family and humanity would flourish being raised by a robot because this whole story is right and mothere is right doing what she did but killing ending humanity judging it’s negativeity the way she did was wrong mankind needs a restart and become healthier better smarter in order to not make the mistakes it does save life’s and save itself but not to be taken free will from them to be free to make there own choice and not to kill from any side I agree with mothere, but ending humanity killing is never the salution to greatness, war only entices war and peace in any side can never happen with violence retaliation and negativity.

this s really my new favorite movie from 2019!
I just finished my second viewing about 2 months apart. First of all congratulations to Grant.....it worked. Very captivating film with top performances all around. The lead actress, 22 years old, gives the perfect performance as "Daughter". I have no doubt that, before it leaves Netflix, I'll watch it again. Second viewing was better for me because I didn't have the shock value and saw the performances more clearly.
One of the best films I've seen in a long time. 😀👍
Was thoroughly surprised by it, went in blind and had a great time.
fantastic film. rare to see this kind of quality come out of Australia
I watched the movie and I loved it and now I wish they made a second I am mother movie
I need just one clip of Mother slowly *dancing menacingly* towards daughter
Awesome! I loved it and to see that it was done with real sets and robotics excites me. I'm daydreaming about a sci-fi using the model effects from Star Wars days 😀🕺🏽🎥🏖🇦🇺

Yeah I’ve watched this movie many times, like the scene daughter and mother are in class five people are sick , you are sick too but can be cured, etc... me I’m sacrificing the five, self preservation , I don’t know them. I’m the doctor and also sick, five get sacrificed self preservation and carry on helping people and honour their sacrifice.

Yeah, some very serious , individual topics, people have different points of view, I agree , bet you had a lively debate, watch it again and you’ll see things you missed small nuisances . I really loved the scene when mother destroys the rat “daughters” reaction beautiful facial expressions the pain and hurt, well acted .And then the realisation life exists outside and so the story expands I could write all day...😃 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me
Awesome movie. Would love a part 2!
i watch this as i go to sleep over and over cuz her voice is so damn soothing xD brilliant choice of motion actor, voice actor, and engineer actor!!
all love Rose Byrne
The daughter deserve an Oscar.
i dont know whether this movie will continue or not but i want it soooo much cause it was more fascinating than i imagined
we did, and we do. brilliant film. stunning performances all round. one of the best psycho-dramas i have seen in years, no matter what genre. definitely room for a sequel, but only if (Hilary the Riply of dystopian sci-fi), gets to be in it. hats off to the filmmakers, as well. top notch production, great script, lighting, everything. was it just me, or were there nods to The Matrix, I Robot, 2001, Alien and so many more...
Pure genius
Great movie, hope they could make part 2 of this movie.
I like Claras reaction at 3:48 :D I think I would have reacted like her

That was amazing work and it looked so not-low-budget. Absolutely stunning. The actor's performance were incredible too!
The end is shocking after that it's a great. Movie congratulations to all the staff
Really great movie!! Didn´t expect to find such a great film. Loved it.
Great script and movie! Saw it in the cinema yesterday and on the big screen the claustrophobic effect comes across very well.
Having a physical person in a suit can give that.. oddly human quality to Mother because they carry themselves like a human would than trying to mimic one in purely SFX and CGI which I think works.. like having Mother be "human mimic robot" instead of "robot mimic human" sold it more that she was meant to raise humans.. Bit ironic tho it was a dude in the suit tho XD But also having Mother's voice not be super robotic was unsettling in the right way.. since the maternal energy made you question if she was just being logical but "loving" instead of the normal trope of "I am a robot, but you can totally trust me" Also having the lighting be naturally part of the set just.. wow definitely helps sells some like.. realism I guess to the sci-fi aesthetic.. And.. I wanna know how big the set actually was, like how many hallways actually connected? How many were disjointed? But also.. the unknown makes it more unsettling to imagine a human in a very bland and repeated building that a robot would obviously have the plans of and move easily throughout just helps so much
I loved it, I hope u could possibly create a part 2
I got to see the mother robot suit the other week at Weta workshop, very well made even close up!

A great film. Very thought provoking, even more so now than when it was released. Looks like an automatic repopulation facility isn’t a bad idea since humanity doesn’t look likely to restrain itself from destroying the climate.
