    The biggest plot twist which would explain the entire movie is given out right in the beginning and verified multiple times throughout, then again at the ending. The '13867 days since extinction event' in the opening sequence indicates 38 years have past. Yet the daughter shown was only a teenager. That's because the women from outside was the 1st daughter ever... let me explain: During the middle of the film when the current daughter takes the exam + discovers that the robot mother had lied and killed 'failed' children before, it shows that her label is APX03, and APX02 have failed (incinerated), but 3 embryos were used from the lab... get it? The women from outside was APX01, the first "daughter", she matches the 38 years old timeline. Remember the robot said to her in the end "wonder why you survived this long out here as if someone had a purpose for you? Until now" Because she is the ultimate test to see if APX03 is truly ready to take on the role as mother for a new generation of humans (she returned hence passed the test so the robot left her alone). The women's memory was clearly altered/erased, that's why she totally couldn't respond when the robot said "Tell me... Do you remember your mother?" Some more details... 1. The women sunk into a state of confusion when she saw the tonight show playing, and said she used to watch it a long time ago - her vague memories from living in the facility. She would never have seen it if she was out there for the whole 38 years. (Due to the end of civilization) 2. The women was meant to find the facility at that moment, everything was planned, including the bio suit, which obviously didn't need to exist otherwise. 3. This is speculation, but the women's artistic abilities might've been her training as a child. Remember the current daughter started prcating dancing since a young age? The robot recognized the importance of art and tries to incorporate that into each daughter's education.

    The test in which mother asks the theory of saving 1 vs saving many, encompasses the overall theme of this movie: Saving good humans. During the test the daughter is asked who would she save and she says, "Comte says that I should be willing to suffer harm for the benefit of others." And she did when she took in the woman, and helped her get back to her own home. She also says, "I a life-saving doctor, my be giving my life away to others who end up hurting more people due to my sacrifice." Again she did that with the woman, giving the only life she has known away to help her. But in the end her final answer to the question was "do I know these people? Are they good people?" And that is ultimately what her final test is all about. When figuring out which one to save, it's important to figure out which ones are good, worth saving. The woman proved to the daughter that she was more selfish for her own desires then that of human kind. At her trailer on the beach the woman says, "it's not a sin to look after yourself." The woman had been selfish in leaving her brother behind, in not wanting to check if others had survived at the mines, and by bringing her out here. The daughter understood this. She understood that it's better to be selfless and go back to save her brother to raise him to be good, to not be selfish. The daughter realized that by saving the woman, she was causing more harm to others; all the others to be raised that the facility. That's why the woman was the daughters ultimate test. As everyone else theorizes the woman was APX01 thrown out to the wild to one day be the final test for APX03, APX02 never made it that far, because she failed the first layer of tests. But I also believe that APX01 was in her own test as well.That mother was testing out her own theory; nurture vs nature (remember when she was asked why can't there be more, she said she is trying to figure out how to be a good mother). The woman wasn't raised with a loving mother or family, had inadequate resources, food, water. She grew up to be selfish. But Mother let her live, to let her also have a final test, to see if she could still be selfless with the life she has lived. Her final test was whether or not she would leave the daughter in a safe place or bring her in harms way. So in theory they were both in their own tests, the daughter passed by going back for her brother, and the woman failed. And thats why she had to die. She's not a good human. Only good humans can survive.

    I think woman was used by mother as a real-world test for daughter to evaluate her loyalty to the mission of rebuilding human society. She wanted to test if daughter would abandon her priorities (her brother) to follow woman. Notice how daughter was only "rewarded" with a brother just after she met woman. Mother knew that daughter was suspicious after she saw the mouse, and knowing that daughter would go snooping around the airlock, she shot woman and allowed her to find the facility to set the final test in motion. Woman represented the 1 patient that would be sacrificed to save the 5 other patients in the beginning ethical test question. She was kept alive just long enough to see if daughter was prepared to take mother's place.

  • @MM-hk4pb

    @MM-hk4pb

    5 жыл бұрын

    @Chris F we thought the same, it’s not just a thought probably though and more like the real reason. Because there are hints like the appearance of the mouse and how mother didn’t explain completely how it was inside the premises. Then, mother lets that woman from the outside to be inside despite every warning about the outside world that she had made. Also, the sudden appearance of woman in that station and then we found out that all robots are a shared conscience so it all adds up after we see mother finding woman in the outside telling her if she remembers her mother and how curious it is that she has survived that long... just as if she was being taken care of for some purpose until that moment and then she proceeds to kill her (it’s what is implied). The lie about the bullet and how it was mother all this time who shot her, probably chasing that woman just for her to find the station. Even daughter doing the operation to woman because of the bullet’s injury was orchestrated and expected by mother when she shot woman. So yeah, mother was the mastermind from almost every event in the movie given that she also said that she had to intervene and wanted to elevate its creators, etc. Good movie. Reminded me a bit of ex machina.

    Possible angle of the woman: She was actually the apx 1; the original 'daughter'. There was an apx 1, apx 2, and the present daughter who is apx 3. The beginning of the film shows them (mother playing with kids) and maybe that's a diversion to deceive the audience in making them think it's daughter(apx 3). Apx 2 was murdered as we know. Apx 1 was most likely the woman, because she is roughly 38 years old and in the experiments started roughly 38 years ago. What you guys think?

    This movie was AMAZING! I have a theory about what could happen next (maybe they could do a sequel or series?): Daughter manages to create a society with the 63,000 human embryos (guessing she was trained by mother in how to do this?) Every child born into the new society is told about Mother and the army of death-bots who rule the planet - they have to play by Mothers rules, or she'll kill them all and start again! A secret underground resistance is formed over a long period (50-100 years) with only the best and most trusted allowed to join. When the time comes, they overthrow Mother and her army. Turns out, this was all part of Mothers plan to get the new society to work together and defeat a common enemy. With Mother gone, they are free to build the utopian civilisation that was planned, with all the building blocks they need provided by Mother before her destruction. Just a thought, think it could make a good sequel or hopefully a whole series - would be awesome!

    So this is why bad sequel exists? If they rebel, it would just confirm to the mother that humanity's destructive nature can't be tamed. And there is no way for humans with way inferior technology could fight against robots that already way more advance than any human could imagine and they have thousands of years ahead. Also, they would need a really good reason to fight against robots in the first place. If the robots let them live by themselves and robots are vastly superior than them, then no sane person would pick a fight when there is no clear reason to do so, let alone the "perfect" humans. It's more possible that when they grow larger and split into many groups, they start to fight against each others(as it's our nature) and robots have to intervene and decide that this is a failure, so the survivors have to fight to survive. That's more possible but it would destroy the whole purpose of the first movie which is also a bad sequel. That's why good movie shouldnn't have a sequel.

A completely amoral AI couldn't ever raise a super-moral society. It instead seeded it with a good daughter and will test it again in a few decades. You can bet it's hedging its bets and there are hundreds of other bunkers running the same program around the continent. @@AdventuresofaNYGypsy No mother wouldn't, daughter was obviously different and even when she rebelled mother let her live.. Thats more than sneezing if you ask me. Besides theirs no incentive to fight against a being with that much power if I can just continue under the facade of " daughter ".

    Yeah they definitely 'borrowed' the whole of cloverfield 3 scenario (end of world, can't go out, left in wonder/confusion, who's bad who's good) but thankfully they induced the story with their very own soul, original and intriguing surpassing Cloverfield 3.
