The industry is full of easily made and written movies who all follow the same storyline to a tee. This is is really easy to see in the action genre. Instead of having a movie with a interesting story it’s all movies made to draw in people for the action itself.

This advice can be applied to video gaming as well. Lately I've been been thinking about what game design possibilities did we miss out on from previous generations because developers didn't maximize the potential of the tech at the time? In the realm outside of AAA gaming, it's all free reign for the aspiring game designer. I'd love to play a modern video game with N64 graphics.

Yep. Honestly, I get sick of seeing interviews with Hollywood producers who give advice about getting into the film industry. I've heard so many of them say how you need to work for free, how you have to be prepared to kiss the a*ses of those working above you to (maybe) get a job and gain this mythical 'experience' they speak so much about. Obviously one has to work hard, that's true with anything. But still, there are many opportunities out there nowadays. I get that Scorsese's advice is targeted more at Directors or writers, but I do wonder how many future film editors or sound designers are currently working doing KZread videos.

And then I went ahead and shot 10 minutes of footage in 6 hrs with 4 of my friends and a guy who had a dslr. I wrote the script and they all worked for free by their own will. We had no food on set and worked nonstop without breaks. Needless to say the end product looked like an introductory clip to a cancelled pilot. But everything I know about filmmaking or production or anything really came from the experience and not from KZread.

Your first film is never going to be good. Every film director made films as a young adult then will NEVER show to anyone because of how embarrassing it is. Remember that and realize that very few directors are “genius” right at the start. Filming is a culmination of skills you have learned over your career.

    1. Have a script that is poorly written in 2 weeks. 2. Craigslist ad for 'Cinematographer' yet only want them because they own a camera. Pay them credit only. 3. Hire a fat person that says they do makeup, when they really just have a makeup kit from Kmart. Pay them credit only. 4. Promise everybody the moon and future work. Never call them again. 5. Shoot the movie without permits so crucial scenes can't be filmed cause it got shut down. Final project is not watchable. 6. Hire editor because they own an apple laptop and know nothing about editing. 7. Audio. Are you kidding me? 8. Say budget is 50k but only takes 10k to make. Profit the rest. 9. Crafty - mcdonalds runs at 3am. 10. 15-20hr days for no pay. PROFIT.

True Story: A few years ago, a friend of mine who has been shooting films all over the world for years, everything you can think of, related that a young director friend of his, won some sort of monetary prize sponsored via Scorsese's company and saw Scorsese at some festival. He decided to walk up and introduce himself to Scorsese and thank him, though someone there had cautioned him against it because Scorsese was a very temperamental and unpredictable man with a bad temper. Nonetheless, he felt thanking the director was the right thing to do. So during a break, he walked up past the crowds and introduced himself by name and explained who he was. He said the Scorsese immediately flew into a rage and the result of simply thanking him, that Scorsese managed to have the monetary prize removed. That's the sort of bastard Scorsese is in real life. So many of these directors are borderline sociopaths and bs artists when the cameras are not on, and Scorsese is probably high at the top of this list of directors who are just real dickheads.

Don't take any advice from geniuses. They don't know how hard it is for those who aren't them. That "follow your dream" mentality may lead you into a spiral of disappointment and wasted decades of your life. Water it down with realism.
