Book version. by far. Don't get me wrong, I do like this movie. But so many things and weirdness's in the the movie that just don't land right is because they changed the core conceit of a virus that creates vampires and the main character becoming to this new society like the vampires of old were: A terror, a boogeyman, a legend to frighten you. They changed that to these zombie things with only the hint of intelligence at the end and by then so many of the other things don't land right because in the book it's all in service to the growing sense in the reader that maybe the main character is going to far or that maybe he might be an unreliable narrator. They changed the core conceit so some of the story beats hit differently or awkwardly since they weren't intended to be in service to the type of ending the Movie was going for.

The theatrical edit is the one i saw first, so this alternate edit was interesting to see. Rest, roam, and play in Paradise Sam. 💔Sigh.... Off topic: $60.00! i had completely forgotten how expensive PPV movies were!! Blake's grandma is a real one.

The dog actor is played by Abbey the German Shepherd and she is 16 years old this year.

He didn't fall for his own trap. The "Vampire leader" observed his girl getting taken by a trap, so he somehow learned to make a similar trap by using the mannequin as bait to lure Robert into his trap.

In the original ending,they are still in the basement lab, but the lady and boy hide in a metal tube in the wall and the Doctor let’s the night seekers in and blows them all up with a grenade. The lady and kid then make it to the sanctuary with a sample of the blood that’s the cure.

Blake's grandma seems like the sweetest. We stan Blake's grandma!

Context on the bacon. I haven't seen this for a long time, but I seem to remember he was saving the bacon for Sam when she managed to eat all her corn or vegetables or something. That's why he was upset about it

So this is actually the alternate ending the original ending is where he sacrifices himself and takes them all out. The book ending was more related to this ending which implies that after all the years of him hunting them, near the end of the story, he realizes that the dark seekers are the dominant species of the planet and they have a sense of intelligence and understand not only feelings but fear as well. The idea of the ending is that he realizes that he views them as monsters but in reality he is the monster of their world he is their boogy man and thats why they attack him because they have enough intelligence to realize he is hunting and killing them so rather then them being mindless killing machines they are simply trying to survive like he is

So you're not taken out of movies when people die but when the dog dies...? 😂😂

Yeah people be desensitized to human death. It's everywhere all the time. But our companions... our personal friends that depend on us and we depend on them when the human race is failing... nah. That just hits harder no matter what.

I’d like to say nothing wrong with you guys being upset about Sam dying. Just means you love your dogs and have a heart. I’m a cat owner but would love to have a dog someday. That scene with Sam makes me cry every time.

A dog killed his dog when it bit Sam. He was dead already then. People are a trip when it comes to this dog getting offed thing. 5-6 billion people also died too…

Actually to your point of the cure “working” on animals, the rat that was given compound six had died.

He didn't just Sac's himself. He sacrificed himself so Anna & Ethan could escape with the cure. You should watch the original ending.

Great movie. Even though the dog stuff ripped my insides out first time (every time) I watched it. Blake's poor grandma. That story is as on brand for Blake as Igli's whole bedroom is for him. Love it.

The novel “I Am Legend” by Richard Matheson has been adapted three times. “The Last Man on Earth” starring Vincent Prince in 1964, “The Omega Man” starring Charlton Heston in 1971, and finally, “I Am Legend” with Will Smith as Robert Neville. Each adaptation differed from the book, but all consisted of Neville as a brilliant scientist, and the infected are vampires, not zombies. In Price’s version, the infected had all the vampiric symptoms, such as fear of daylight, can’t stand mirrors, repelled by garlic, and were killed with stakes to the heart. In Heston’s version, the infected function as a cult. Smith’s version makes it harder to discern what the infected have become, as I thought they were zombies until his research leads to a different kind of monster. I would have liked a version where Neville is alone with his dog and finds a cure with his blood, only to be killed by the other survivors mistaking him for an infected because of his delusional state after being alone for so long, and the dog was taken in by his killers.

The novel is also about the classic kind of vampire, so the first adaptation is the most alike the source material.

i don’t know if you guys notice but Will always includes his kids in movies where he can, willow is his daughter in this movie along with Jaden in PoH

In the original ending, he actually blows up the lab with all of them.

When i first saw it he let them in and blew them up.

Samantha giving her life to save Will Smith was beyond sad... but Igli going to get his pup and one of Blake's doggos coming over to him... that brought mega tears 😢

LOL lost it at "bros looking for the copper"

When he loses his dog, you become emotionally drained and can barely finish the movie. The alternate ending pisses me off more than original.

Tbh the alternate ending is better than the original ending and many people preferred it.

1. This is my favorite Will Smith movie. 2.The part that gave me real respect for Will Smith is the scene where he's talking to the mannequin right after having to kill his best/only friend and says, "Please say hello to me". THAT'S acting. Where did he go to get that?. 3. This film is mostly a remake of "The Last Man On Earth" and "The Omega Man" staring Charlton Heston. 4. The wild animals escaped from the Manhattan Zoo. 5. He was saving the bacon for Samantha. 6. There's speculation that he's the bad guy because he's the hunter now. 7. I absolutely fell in love/LUST with Alice Braga after I saw this movie. 8. The female was the leader's squeeze. 9. The original ending where he sacrifices himself. That one's better. He dies in "OM" too.

The lab scene did happen, except the dark seekers break in and Nevel dives towards them with a grenade and blows himself up

Fun Fact: When this movie came out, in IMAX they were showing the first scene of "The Dark Knight" which was a HUGE deal. Both were awesome to see in IMAX

Basement scene did happen in original they were still in the same area it just was different. He gives her the cure and lets them get away to the colony and he blows the creatures up and himself.

The movie is titled ‘I am Legend’ because by the end and especially in the original ending Neville realises that he is the real monster now and has been hunting down and experimenting on them when they’re asleep.

@@ayeitzdj the creatures were still relatively intelligent and had thoughts and feelings etc. Neville would come in the day and as you could see plastered all along the wall in his lab were pictures of all the hundreds of creatures he had taken, experimented on and killed. These would have been friends and family members to the others. Just look at how angry the leader is when he takes what is presumably his wife.

The book was a great short 1 and finished with Dr Neville saying “I am legend”!!!!!!!

Dude HE IS NOT LEGEND TO US HUMAN HE IS LEGEND TO THE VAMPAIRES AS A CRUEL SERIAL KILLERS. IN THE BOOK THE VAMPIRES AREA CTUALLY VERY SMART AND THEY HAVE THEIR OWN SOCIETY! HE IS A LEGEND THAT THE VAMPIRES TELL KIDS NOT TO MESS WITH BECAUSE HE IS A MONSTER FOR DOING EXPERIMENT OF THEIR KIN. THE MAIN VILLAN IN THIS STORY IS WILL SMITH NOT THE VAMPIRES.

I prefer the alternate ending it is much better. Will gets the women and kid out and gives them a cure to take to the colony. And he grenades them all in that room to take them out. Saves the world and gets revenge for Doggo

Ooh good choice! Abbey the dog (who played Sam) did such a great job as a dog actress! We had some great post-apocalyptic movies in the 00s and early 2010s. Another movie I love is The Book of Eli (2010) starring Denzel Washington.

As a relatively new fan (I discovered you all around January, with the Conjuring reactions and.. I stayed!), it's nice to see Blake not covering his face that much during a horror movie. 🤭 Almost as satisfying as when Matthew actually love a movie without any sort of disappointment. 😂 Anyway, you guys are great. Yes, Samantha died, BUT from the Vampire's pov This dude came and kidnapped his lady! The Vampire is John Wick...Liam Neeson in taken...whoever you want to say. Samantha is the unfortunate collateral damage in that guy's revenge story.

Awww Blake’s grandma story was so cute ❤ Also Sam dying destroyed me as a kid and it destroyed me now 😢 (Spoilers for the book below) In the book the creatures are more like your traditional vampires, some are pathologically violent but there are some who have intelligence like Ruth in the book. So I suppose maybe that’s what they were going for with the alternate ending? Giving them some signs they can be reasoned with?

The "alternate"/original ending was released because test audiences didn't react well to this ending. However, this ending is the one that matches the ending of the book that the movie is based on. Because of that, the sequel is supposed to pick up after this ending. You asked about a movie with a similar premise. Have you ever seen The Girl with All the Gifts? It's a zombie apocalypse movie with some similar themes to this movie. It's not one that many people have reacted to, so I'd be very curious to see you guys react to it. It's a 2016 British film that received generally favorable reviews.

Please pardon this small rant: Very hilarious watching you guys react to this, with the dog and all. It's a pale, lifeless imitation of the book. The ending and "the reveal" that the vampires are evolving or becoming more human is handled with so much more care, grace and style than this movie. Even though it's a "decent, if forgettable" flick. Please read the book, if any of you guys enjoy that medium.

sorry back to say if you like stories like this the book warm bodies have zombies like that. they dont go into it nearly as much as in the film but the dark seekers always reminded me of the bonies from the warm bodies books
