The scene where Will Smith sat craddling his doggy, knowing full well that he had no choice but to end her life was the most devastating of the movie. We all love dogs. And if we own one, or have ever owned one we all know the pain in the heart when we lose them!

When I watched the original Last man on earth ( 1964 ) with Vincent price I remember him laying on the couch with a little hand pump and ivs to him and the dog and he pumped it all night and saved the dog since he's immune . When I rewatched it years later he also killed the dog so I have no clue where I got the image of him saving it but I like my way better .

The title "I am Legend" comes from the fact that the monsters were just as smart as regular people, had created their own culture, and they considered Robert Neville to be the "Boogey Man" because he hunted and killed them. Hence, among the monsters, he' become a legend.

Be sure to check out the alternative ending. It's much better and truer to the novel than the 'Hollywood' ending that ended up being used. Will avoid spoilers here for anyone who hasn't seen it, but the alternative ending is ambiguous, deeper and thought provoking. It will give you an entirely new perspective on Will Smith as the titular "legend".

Amber, I'm with you. It does feel eerie after experiencing our own pandemic. I saw this movie when it came out in theaters in 2007 and never dreamed that someday I would see a worldwide virus. You need to see the earlier version "The Omega Man" 1971 with Charleston Heston. The "infected" in that version are still humans but a dangerous mob who follow an infected cult leader named Mathias. He has convinced them they are now "enlightened" and the future of the world even though they are all dying. Very good film mostly because of Charleton Heston.

The part in the movie where the virus has spread and New York is cut off and people are begging to be let go into a clean area. That part got me because something like that could easily happen in New York. When the bridge blew up I was like yeah WOW! Talk about seeing something that could very much be a reality one day. And seeing New York dead quiet was uncomfortable.

It was a game back in 2013 and 2014, Jordan I don't know if you're familiar with it or not, but they made a series out of it and it was really done well. Also the premise for the "infected" as they call them on this show (they are not called zombies they are called infected) is more believable than most zombie stories!!! It's an infection of fungi. Anyway if Amber feels brave maybe you guys could watch it!!

It was fucking horrible. Read the book. It wasn't a generic happy action hero ending like the movie. The whole point of the story was that Neville learns that they have their own world and society filled with culture and laws. They see him as the boogeyman, coming out when they are sleeping and killing them one by one. He, the last man, realizes that he will forever be a part of this societies history and culture. He will be the monster that is told to their young. The last thing he says is "I am Legend". THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF THE STORY. FUCK THIS MOVIE SO FUCKING MUCH FOR GETTING RID OF IT.

Also Jay, oooh it sounds like y'all need to react to some of Will's songs 🤣 he definitely has more than "one good song" lol. From his Fresh Prince and Dj Jazzy Jeff days in the late 80s to 90s, to his iconic songs hes made for movies hes been in. Songs like Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble, Parents Just Don't Understand, A Nightmare on My Street, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Summertime, Men In Black, Gettin Jiggy Wit It, Wild Wild West, Nod Ya Head, and Just the Two of Us. I'd love to see y'all react to all of those! Lol. Also, would love to see y'all watch Men In Black 1 & 2, and Wild Wild West(which is controversial because of how different it is from the series, but I've loved it since I was a kid and still love it now along with the series lol). Since it’s October and getting closer to Halloween.. I’m psyched that you all will be reacting to horror movies. You should really consider watching The Exorcist (1973) version. This is probably by far the scariest movie that was ever made at that time. People in the theaters were passing out and believed that the actual celluloid had evil in it. I don’t want to give away anything, but it is definitely something you should view once in your lifetime.

When I was 5 years old, in 1978, The Exorcist played on broadcast TV for the first time. It just happened to be the night my parents went out and left us with a babysitter. I think you know where this is going. The babysitter let me and my 7 year old brother watch it, and it scared the living hell out of me. I had nightmares for months afterwards 🤣🤣

Usually I don't get emotional watching movies, but when I first saw this movie and saw the scene where he had to kill his dog, that got to me. Not only is that dog his only companion, the one thing that is keeping him sane, but its the last reminder of his family because his daughter gave him the dog. If I had to put down my pet like that, that would break me. It broke him to which is why he went on that suicidal night drive. He was going to take as many of them out before they got to him. The alternate ending is better as others have pointed out and is the preferred version that I rewatch.

@@HD00957 As you said, the book does a better job of showing their intelligence. I would say the evidence the dark seekers set the trap is actually evidenced by Neville's own actions. For starters, he wrongly asserts complete devolution after the dark seeker exposes himself to sunlight. We also never see him set random traps and he is very meticulous about keeping track of buildings he has searched. So where is the evidence that he sets random traps and why isn't he meticulous about keeping track of them? Not to mention he treats the mannequins like humans. Why would he randomly put Fred near a trap? To answer your question more directly, there is evidence of intelligence shown during the attack at the pier and the attack on his house.

@@sundalangur3250 fair. But i think he may not have been less meticulous about the traps but just extremely caught off guard about the mannequin being where it was... Seems like he genuinely lost track of where he was, what the mission was, etc. as if seeing that made him question his entire existence... thus falling into your own trap in a fit of madness I do think the seekers could've moved the mannequin, but in the movie version that we're discussing, i dont see the walkers setting that trap.

In the old story, the monsters become self-aware and the main character is the murderous bad guy in their eyes. Interesting. Originally Ridley Scott was attached to direct the project in 1997, with Arnold Schwarzenegger playing the role of Robert Neville. The special makeup effects were going to be designed by Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff for the mutants known as Darkseekers, but it was cancelled as a lot of Warner Bros films were bombing at the box office. Francis Lawrence, who Directed Constantine, was brought onboard with Will Smith playing Neville.

This is the happiest version of the story, but the most accurate version would be Vincent Price (legend of old school 50s and 60s horror) adaptation “The Last Man on Earth.” It’s honestly the closest to the novel and it totally works to this day. Fair warning though, the real meaning behind the Book and (this movie’s) title “I Am Legend” is far more sinister in an ironic way. I don’t want to spoil it because you should really watch Price’s adaptation but let’s just say not all Legends are good. That’s it. No spoilers I swear.
