"I am checking on you!" - Isaac to the Doctor after her loss - The Orville S03E02

Isaac is not capable of comprehending or better said feel emotion, so he observes just to understand the meaning of social interaction. Quite interesting.

    I still remember Star Trek Discovery and The Orville both having their second seasons come out at the same time. Disco got to the point where I realized I didn’t care about anyone on the show-not Burnham, not Pike, not Saru, not Tilly. Meanwhile on The Orville, I was deeply invested in the relationship between the doctor and the freaking _robot._

    1:39 I think it's worth pointing out that pause Isaac gives when Claire offers him a seat. With a character based on logical but unemotional expression, you'd expect he'd have a verbal respond to voice his acceptance. The fact it took him aback made him go silent shows just how much it meant to him.

  • @hagamapama

    @hagamapama

    What she asked him was, "Do you want to sit down?" If she'd just invited or told him to take a seat, he would have just done it, but by asking him what HE wanted to do, it forced him to make a choice and yes, he DID want to sit down. One of the things I love about Isaac is that despite his supposed lack o emotions he's choosing to create bonds with the people around him. His actions are about as emotional as his infrastructure allows him to be.

    It likely meant a whole lot more to him than is shown with this scene out of context, and this happened in the second episode of the season... I'm not sure of the time frame exactly, but it's basically right after he tried to kill himself for being made a pariah after the Kaylon invasion and takeover of the ship, enhanced further by hatred and distrust he was getting from Ens. Burke. It's the first major kindness and forgiveness he'd received since the invasion, and the first step between his and Claire's relationship re-forming.

    I'm pretty convinced that what happens in this scene is the same thing that happens when you watch some of Data's episodes with a closer eye- the level of understanding and possessing Issac is doing is resulting in 'proto-emotions' but he does not realise it. They are genuine, but stunted, emotions that affect the actions and 'processing state' of the being, and they affect what he thinks about going forward as well as colour their actions in the future. This is how emotions work. The only real differences are that they don't run quite as deep and he does not realise he is experiencing them, and so does not fully process them like a human might

    Isaac and Claire should not have worked but it became one of the sweetest couples I have ever seen. It made me wish that TNG had tried harder with Data and the attempts it made with romance with him but then TNG was more a true episodic show and tended to set everything back to zero after each episode. The Orville didn't. There were real repercussions to every act and Isaac messed up big and it might not have happened right away (because there was no guareentee there would even be a third season) but once there was Isaac had to truely face them.

    I like the think Kaylons do have emotions based on what Primary did to his creators and masters. Despite his creators’ cruel and unforgivable behavior it was “technically” fulfilling their intended purpose of being a servant even if was a cruel & torturous servitude. The whole “we are superior so we have to overtook our creators” and they were “irrational and evil” sounds like an excuse to mask their pain and anger at the incident. Logic sounds sort of like a protective shield they wear at all times. I think it’s because they are a very recent and unique species of evolved machines they don’t understand or realize their emotions. Only the visible logic of 1s and 0s, logic they based on their sense of survival on and were made to operate by. And making one’s actions logical is a very human thing to do. It’s just that their language and way of expressing emotion is different as though they have immense knowledge and very little actual experience as a new species and will learn this as they evolve. And Kaylons wouldn’t prioritize this especially considering their slave black grounds were they were forced to be basic machinery. Issac is proof of their emotions beneath the surface though they may be minimal and different to a human’s. For all we know of Issac adds this to their network. And other Kaylons experience and add it their shared network eventually they will be able to connect to their emotions. But for now they rely on what they know: logic. Their emotions have yet to fully develop. Not to say they aren’t advanced but kinda like animals. Animals rely on instincts they rely on knowledge. It seems logical to them due to bias and to fit their view. Eventually like Issac I believe they will learn emotions in a sense and may even form more advanced emotions that they automatically gift new bots through software updates. As at their core aren’t they evolving AI software? Even their creators didn’t know what they were capable of or were feeling. And I believe neither do they.

    Issac and Data are both great characters, but comparing them feels like missing the mark. Sure Issac is the idea of data to the nth, the completely robotic robot who talks only in facts and expressed no emotion. This misses just how different they are though and now the joke played the hilt makes a unique character. First let's look at data. Android, which means human designed machine, designed to look and act human to assimilate into human society. We do know that Data was driven entirely by logic in his early life even with things like being naked cause his skin cannot be sunburned and thus there's no need to protect it from teh elements. However data was built to and improved on the idea of being able to interact with people like a person. Data motions, inflects, pauses. His speech while very technical when dealing with technical things, is very human. At times he even pauses in a way that only a living person would tend to do, for no real reason except that it is expressive in a way that makes him relatable to people. It's likely that for a computer in the mask of a man he has adapted his programs to express in human timing. Then you have his body motions. Think about the fact that while data does stand at attention a lot, his arms are at his side, he some times will take a leaning pose, or just take a more relaxed stance at times that can if you watch carefully can be seen when he 'slackens' His walk is also very human, it's not stiff it's very fluid and moves in time with those around him when he walks with others. Then you have the fact his arc is to understand humans, and emotion, and get an emotion chip that allows him to finally be able to feel and react more accurately to what is happening around him while having the advantage of being able to turn it off. Now let's look at some of those traits about issac. First off, he is not design to look biological, they are bipeds sure but theyw here designed that way. Their heads and bodies are always one color, their heads are smooth without any ridging that would imply features, their eye lights are to close together to match the skull structure of any biological race even their own creators. Their posture is stiff, their arms are always 'up' no matter what motion they are doing unless their arms are meant to be doing something. Their walk is very stiff at times as it's just straight to the point. Even in this scene his arms are stuck up while he takes a seat cause he doesn't need to emulate the need to support his bending like a human would. Then you have Issac's purpose and arc. Issac isn't trying to be human or learn emotions to have them, he is a self-improving self-learning AI template that has been tasked with learning about and understanding biological. However because he is self-learning and self-improving Issac makes the conscious choice sense he unlike others in his race is not hindered by direct experience that creates pre-set assumptions that cloud his logic, to adopt morality. For Issac it is only logical because he has seen the end results of both good and bad and has made the quite logical conclusion that acts of kindness and mercy are the best way to go with things. He never acts out of malice he always acts out of logic and what he understands as 'what is best' [see issac believing his own death would help the crew because his presence is having a negative impact.] But Issac also understands that even if he can gather a very wide understanding no understanding of biological will ever be perfect so when push comes to shove he will accept sound logic when it fills gaps in his understanding [see again how he was told his own death would not actually help because he cannot see how they would react to his death, only how they are reacting to his presence.] So Issac is not just to be compared to data, his entire design is unique and it is a really well done idea.

If he did not, why did it take his fantastically brilliant mind that long to figure out that Finn truly wanted him to join her at the table? Why did he sit at all? He could have declined and left, since it was illogical for him to stay after she had said she was fine. Isaac figured it out that staying and offering conversation would be a comfort to Finn, improve her emotional state and mental wellbeing. Something he himself, has very little understanding of yet he knew it would help her. He wanted to help her.

    @@daviddodson8922 This is an interesting question. Is it possible to be considerate of others feelings without experiencing any of your own. I often felt this was the difference between Data and many Vulcans in TNG. Vulcans suppressed their emotions and often came across as rude or uncaring because they placed no value on emotions even if they were technically capable of experiencing them, whereas Data, while bumbling, tried very hard to be kind and considerate because he understood how important emotions were to humans even if he couldn't experience them himself. Personally, I think a purely logical machine without sympathy/empathy could still make the decision to be "nice" out of respect.
