One thing I did when I was in a similar situation after paying bills and putting money in savings, I'd buy a $5 to $20 gift card for my local grocery store and Amazon each pay period and set them aside. When I needed/wanted something and funds were low, I'd use the gift cards instead of the credit cards. It let me pay down the debt and build up my savings.

I went through FPU years ago, a few years after I became a widow. It was so helpful and I paid off a fair amount in a much shorter time than I thought it would take. I cancelled three CC's but kept one. An annoyance to my FPU mentor, for sure! I use it and always know the balance. I keep the cash in my bank account and pay it off every month. I get a whole 1% in points and am not at all interested in getting another card that would "pay" me more. I use my CC as a budgeting tool, not for points. I would also NEVER recommend anyone do what I do! It takes work and a lot of financial discipline which I'm good with. About 3 yrs short of bs7 and can hardly wait!

I've seen many people fall back into debt, and it is very similar to when you lose weight too fast and end up getting it back. Knowing you were able to get out of debt before is a double-edged sword in many cases, because you tend to think if you were able to do it before, you can do it again. And that is true for most of the people who were actually able to get out of debt, but its not a healthy relationship with money, in the same way people losing weight sometimes end up with an unhealthy relationship with food.

This is such a good point. To give my experience, I have never had consumer debt except for a car loan that I paid off and had the car for 15 years. However I was disorganized wasted/loss money. So my savings did not increase the way it should have because I did not pay attention to my spending. But once I heard that Mint was going away, I started using spreadsheets and formulas to track my spending. This has been a game changer. Expense tracking helps me to be intentional with my spending, and to understand my cash flow in semi-real time. I try to use credit cards for my spending as much as possible for a few reasons. The key is that I view the credit card like a debit card, I track every dollar and I pay it off each month. This has changed my whole relationship with money.

The credit card game takes focus. Essentially you have to treat cashack cards like debit cards. Pay it off before the due date and keep your utilization ideally under 10% on each card. Keep a list of your cards and assign each a purpose if you have more than one. Grocery and gas are common categories. If you don't jet around the world you do not need a point card or any card with an annual fee and perks you can't use or convert to cash to help pay down your balances. Good luck!

I buckled down and paid off all my credit cards and bought my used car with cash ($11K) all in 1 year. I lived with my mom to save on rent during this time. It was not fun particularly being in my 20s watching my friends traveling, shopping etc. But when I sent the last credit card payment, I felt financial freedom something I had not experienced in a long time. I’ve been following you for almost two years and THIS video reminds me of why I do-your honesty and transparency about how your debt started is very familiar to me and relatable. I started with a $500 credit card in college and it spiraled down from there. I was able to purchase my first home this summer but I still have personal loans, three credit cards and a car loan on top of it. Never feel embarrassed or sad about your situation. The fact that you are hitting the hammer at it now rather than later is a good thing. Your “besties” are on this journey with you. We are all on the same road…just in different cars.

I don’t know, if creditcards in the us works different than in Germany. But here in Germany you not only can make your payment at the end of the month, but you can put money on your card when ever you want. So I started to sit down in the evening and transfer the money I spend my that day back to my creditcard. This way I’m not accidentaly spent more than I have and there is no surprise bill at the end of the month

Starting to tackle your debt is your 30th birthday gift to yourself, and a good one. Really! You'll thank yourself later. Keep your focus on paying them off and keep track of balances and payments. Work either a debt snowball... smallest balance to largest, or list and monthly pay based on interest rate. Snowball gives you a more immediate charge but both work. You can do it!

Thank you for being so open and talking about your plan. I'm currently roughly 14k in the hole. Spread out between credit cards and dental bills. I'm grateful that I am doing this and getting rid of it while I'm without kids, but we still are a single income household due to my fiancé's intense college program (unpaid internships are a scam). I have already paid off 7k since the beginning of this year and I hope to be completely free by next year. I know we can do this, it's just so hard. I'm praying for the girlies who are doing this as single parents; y'all are strong and I believe in you.

Having a hight credit score is great, but most people don’t know that banks also look at your debt to income ratio. I’ve work for a financial institution for years, and the majority of people I came across have no idea that If your debt to income is above a 50%, you won’t qualify for a loan even though you have a decent credit score

Girl I hope you realize how inspiring this is! I’m also in so much debt that I’m embarrassed to say it out loud, I got carried away with credit cards too and didn’t know how to budget properly. I have now started to budget and I’m making a plan to pay it off. This is so inspiring to me because paying debt is not easy when you still need to pay your other bills. I love how you have a plan. Usually all the other budgeting channels i see, they always show the rainbows and sunshine of cash stuffing but rarely do I find real channels like yours where they show real people have debt! I thank God I found your channel and this video because Lord knows I needed it! I’m encouraged thanks to you and your honesty, Praying we both are debt free in Jesus Name! ❤

The fact that you admitted you are in ``debt`` makes you a real heroine. You are in the same boat that alot of folks are in. Covid did a number on alot of folks finances. Also sometimes little things we do can add up. Two For Tuesday Meals, Coffee Shops and buying things on Amazon. That can really affect you. You will get out of it. You are at least trying. On Caleb Hammer`s Channel, there are folks who don`t realize how small things can affect them.

My suggestion is instead of a monthly credit score. Move that to quarterly but on the monthly portion you should use to keep track of your net worth? Which I think would be a lot more helpful and motivating. When you see from month to month, your negative net balance # is going lower. Which is a good thing!

I use credit cards for everything to get the cash back. I keep an updated apple notes balance with interest rate highest to lowest and balance. I cross it off after it’s paid and if I use the card. I add it back. Then I add my installment loans from highest interest to lowest interest. This simple method has helped me a ton. Then I schedule all payments before my paycheck hits. 😊

Remember to put any money from windfalls you get into this plan as well for faster payoffs. Also I love the idea of keeping an emergency fund for the future so hopefully you can turn to that and would never need to take out another 401k loan. Also although this lesson is painful at least you learned something about the credit card points game- it only works when you pay things off on time and in full every time. Best of luck!!

I need to get out of debt. I have excellent credit and not behind on anything I just have over $25,000 in credit card and loan debt. I don’t want to not pay the bills or file bankruptcy and ruin my credit. How it’s it possible when I barely have $300 to last a month after paying bills and the minimum on credit cards. We can’t survive on $300 so we keep using the credit cards it’s never ending.

I love that you’re being transparent with us! I have a lot of debt I’m working towards that has been sent to collections because of a past relationship I was in. Unfortunately that relationship was my children’s father. Next year I’m knocking it out! I’m slowly working on it this year but I’m hoping to have most of my debt paid off by next year at the very latest. Minus my student loans.
