    I found a small Robin who had flown into a store window and snapped her poor beak. Knowing she would starve without human intervention, I quickly drove her to the nearest vet and was met with the unfortunate news that all they could do was euthanize her. They were so kind and they didn’t charge us for it. I think of her all the time and I want to get a tattoo in her memory. Rest in Peace, little Darcy.

    After a Robin hit my window and gave itself brain damage i painted flowers on my windows with acrylic paint, it comes off very easy and is super customizable, cute and cheap. The Robin survived, it just bobs its head side to side every once and a while for a couple minutes at a time, its been a couple years since it happened and im happy to say its still alive, and it still comes to my bird feeders yearly, i know its the same one cuz it still bobs its head. Idk if its having seizures or if hes just a little funky, im honestly shocked it made it this long but im always so happy to see it come back.

    I used to have a problem with my windows as well I found that if I immediately took the bird put it in a dark box wrapped in a blanket in the quiet wait about 15 min and give it sugar water via a little syringe (same I use for the hummingbirds 1/4 cup sugar one cup water) that the birds will make it. Sometimes they would even eat mealworms out of my hand before flying off. I can’t believe domestic cats are the number one killer of song birds despite all these window strikes/pesticide use. Keep your cats indoors ppl, I want my kids to wake up to singing birds just like I did when I was little.

    Its important to note that particularly for small birds, delicate handling has to be 100%. Quick and done. So a pre-planned carrier is fully outfitted for them before they are gently place in it, and transported, by a single handler. I cant know for sure that the handling of this bird (particularly by the children) played into its death. But I know from my own experience, that the quickest and quietest way you can get birds to their recovery station, the better. Theres simply no time to film or involve other hands at all... But Especially children, who cant yet understand this specific level of handling. Birds have more delicate hearts, which makes time and comfort the most important priorities. Wheres rodents typically need to be able to build trust a resource first, because they only tend to need help, if theyve lost their previous support system. Ultimately, wild birds are more socially anxious, and their hearts typically just arent built to deal with the anxious chemical coctail that is dumped, via speed running human interaction for care. Necessary or otherwise. Combine that with any internal damage, and unnecessarily prolonged exposure to handling? They wont stand a chance. Compared to rodents, birds are just... different. Im sure you already know most of this, but hopefully it might help in the future, for other comment readers. For such delicate featherbabies, its hard to say if a dark and quiet environment with access to water, is a better environment than say a vet clinic. But from my experience. Its been better to provide them solitude the first day, and take them to a vet after.

I feed 2 flocks of mockingbirds, a male and female shrike, black birds, and all kinds just passing through, but the mockingbirds are my heart. I’ve watched them nurture their babies, and now the babies are flying over to me. I love it, they’re so rambunctious chasing each other, chasing the sparrows and having a good time. I own 8 parrots myself, the largest being my 2 quaker parrots, yellow and green. I’m the crazy bird lady in the neighborhood, lol.

    Had a sparrow fly into my bedroom window once and it landed in the gutter, which is really hard to reach, I'd have needed a ladder at least. So while I'm hanging out the window looking at the poor thing, trying to figure out how to get it. It blinks. Then blinks again. I spoke gently to it and it sat up and flew away, seemingly unharmed! I was so glad it was ok! Another solution for preventing birds from flying into your windows is to put a decal of a bird flying silhouette. Preferably a large bird like a hawk. The small birds especially won't want to get too close. We used these at home, but also the local wildlife park uses them in their windows, since they have a lot of bird feeders near the windows, and it seems to work well to keep the little birds from flying into the windows.

  • @Asp47999
    @Asp47999Ай бұрын

    Not to mention you can’t have the entire family petting and holding the bird, lady. The stress is unmanageable for wild birds and rabbits, they will die regardless. The box should also be blacked out, completely dark for the same reason. Never attempt to feed, water, or rehab an injured animal by yourself. Call the proper wildlife authority so you can actually prevent more of these things happening, instead of being an accomplice to their demise. Thank you for standing at my soapbox.
