Well there are few people that changed their oil early and often so the metal shavings were flushed. Then miracles do exist for DI where carbon buildup just doesn't matter. Man if you have 100k on one of these, call yourself lucky but don't make the same mistake. Statistics still matter.

As a Hyundai Technician I replace 2 to 3 of these a week in a not so big market. A great deal of these replacements end up being due to neglect, but even if it were just the well maintained ones I would still end up doing 100 to 120 a year. These end up with extreme carbon build up.

You'll need it. Dont park in your garage. In Hyundais as recent as 2019 the ABS system can ignite fires that catch the brake fluid on fire followed by the fuel lines then BOOM, what car are going to put your unlimited mile warrantied lower end in? Sell now before you get really screwed by the most reckless company of our generation.

12 years and 346 comments. I will read them to find one or two where their Theta gdi has carbon and sludge buildup on the back of the intake valves. Since I now have a 2022 SmartStream 2.5L. Stated horsepower is around 195. But I think Hyundai is conservative on the actual output. The 2.5L growls for being just a non boosted inline four! Had the 2.0L Turbo. 100,000 miles and horrible egr/pcv system consuming 1.5 quarts of oil every 5,000 miles.

Best way to prolong major maintenance in regards to carbon build up is to install a catch can. I'm driving a Lancer Ralliart Turbo 1.8t GDI. Mitsubishi sold this design to Hyundai! Common problems are High Pressure Fuel Pump spoils after some time, ignition coil problems and always use the manufacturer suggested spark plugs. Don't up the boost as the MAF Sensor may (highly likely) not be able to take more than 0'9bar of boost on stock setup and without a tune up. If you're intending to boost higher etc, use low comp Pistons and slightly build the lower block.

This kind of GDI engine builds carbon on the intake valves like other GDI engine by cause of the PCV and EGR (return smog, oil, etc. in intake manifold)? Why the distribution gas is controled by the mechanical piece mounted on the camshaft? What piece is down, under the engine (crankshaft), droven by a second timing chain? Thank.

No port fuel injectors to clean the intake valves? Also why use 2 timing chains to drive the camshafts and the oil pump separately. More complexity means more room for mechanical failure like the tensioners used for the timing chains.

Has Hyundai cured the intake valve stem and head carbonizing which is common on GDI engines? It seems that the injector sprays the back of the intake valve with gas spray when it is open on the intake stroke, leading to carbon buildup on the back of the intake valve. Plus sucking in the PCV gasses don't help either. .

...the positive crankcase ventilation hose is plumbed into the intake. the oil vapors and blowby gasses pass by the intake valves and deposit themselves on the hot surface of the valves causing engine problems in older di engines. direct injected engines do not have gasoline vapor cleaning the contaminated intake valves as a multiport engine does.

Don't like chain driven balance shafts, not good far too much of a load placed on that small hyvoe chain.. Why not get use odd cylinders 3 or 5 ? or even balance the crankshaft properly . WV have only just learned that lesson, their 2.0 TDI balancers are now gear driven still have that tiny shaft from the oil pump though! . Honda used a balancer on their 250 RS motorcycle in the 80's the little chain stretched like mad and would snap if not kept adjusted.. Cosworth 2lt Pinto 400bhp
