Thank you Kris!! This is on my shortlist as next EV along with BYD Atto 3 so far, just waiting on Hyundai Australia to launch it and put out specs & pricing due in a couple weeks I believe. Wonder what it would be like with Summer tires as difference. I usually only run with about 19-20c in my Ioniq EV as I find that plenty warm enough most of the time. Looking forward to your other videos on this car as well.

I LOVE the physical buttons for infotainment. Touch bar (in cars like EV6, HI5, ID.3/4) was one of the reasons I didn't wanted to upgrade from my current Kia Soul EV.

I’ve sometimes had serious problems wth charging at Ionity ith my 2021 Kona. I’d say that over the last 6 attempts to charge, there were 3 occasions that either I couldn’t charge or spent 20 minutes getting it to charge. The car seems to charge fine elsewhere (on type 2) and at home, but still don’t know for sure if the problem is the car or the network as I haven’t tried another rapid charger recently.

How much more range one could hope for with 17” wheels and summer Tires? (Possibly at around 10deg C or above?) Does ths specific car have heatpump, right?

Calculated battery size is off, cause the SoC is still non linear. Also that 24% for HVAC seems odd maybe some software issue? Or could this be the reason for the high consumption?

  • @BatteryLife

Since I drove almost the full battery, it doesn't matter if the SOC falls non linear

What is the difference in size and weight of the old and new Kona? Of I'm not mistaken, the battery capacity is the same, but new one is significantly larger and heavier. I also noticed that the tires R19 while the old one has R17, which definitely impacts the consumption.

The Tesla Model 3 is so much more efficient, but I prefer the interior of the Kona/E-Niro. If only everyone else could achieve 250 Wh/hr per mile, not 400.

Either we are missing something (low tire pressure, too many overtakes, strong headwind etc), or they messed up the Kona. Your test with the previous Kona showed 18.9kwh/100km. Better weather, but still..

I didn't watch the other Kona review and the traffic there but simply wanting to achieve 130kmh on average with you even going 140 to compensate low speed is something complete different than going constant 130. You know the deal with the higher the speed the higher the air resistance and the exponential curve. Also 19 inch tires have a massive impact @@BatteryLife

Actually the test is messed, is can't be possible to get this values - mine got 15% better consumption on a higher average speed, on a 220 Km trip with a bit of rain. Actually... the only difference that I can see are the tires - maybe mine being the "summer" ones, they would be more efficient. Also the tire pressure can be a huge factor.

Wait: you say that you normalize the average speed to ensure comparability. Average speed is a linear measure. Consumption does not increase linearly with speed, rather progressively. Going 130kmph 100% of the time is more efficient than going 50%-50% 110kmph/150kmph. But average speed will be 130 in both cases. Did you hammer it that much with this Kona? This high consumption needs further explanation :)

I agree with you, but Chris seems to compensate like this in most of tests because of German traffic, so it probably equalises out fairly well overall if you compare between his tests.

I would say because your speed is too high. The speed limit on a British motorway is 70 mph, I.e. about 113km/h. If you were driving at at about 113 km/h your consumption would be a lot lower. The 17 inch wheels would be better as well.
