I feel I owe you this. I’m a contractor and work on average 65 hours per week. I’m also riddled with adhd, but i love stories. I have over 300 books on audible and am primarily a sf fan. I bought Hyperion on Audible about 2.5 years ago but as you say sf can be overbearing and i couldn’t get past the first chapter without totally drifting. I kept the book because of the reviews and opinions of people i respect. It literally wasn’t until this video that i could break through into the universe. You broke things down for me enough to try again. Because of your commentary i knew enough to keep me engaged just long enough to hit hoyt and the bikura. That sent me. I’m half way through the fall and i sincerely thank you brother.

One of the best character arcs. I really wish she was "part" of the pilgrimage and got her own tale, because Simmons shows that she formed a little rebellion against the Technocore years ago, and waited for the Hyperion pilgrimage to strike. She makes the ultimate sacrifice but she also didn't see the full picture. The Lions and Tigers and Bears is one of the best cosmic horror/divine entities I've come across.

My adoptive grandmother was a hard, cold Norwegian woman. Although she took care of my brother and I on a physical level, I was terrified of her my entire childhood. I often felt misunderstood, disapproved of. After the passing of my adoptive grandfather, she gifted me a paper-back copy of "Endymion". I was a bit perplexed by it at that age of 12 and it sat on my shelf, then boxes, for years. It wasn't until the age of 16 that I cracked it open. My mind exploded and I fell in love with sci-fi. It wasn't until the age of 25 that I realized this was book 3 of a 4 part series. I listened to all 4 books and my appreciation for this series blossomed. I'm now 38, have re-purchased all 4 audiobooks and am having an amazing experience re-discovering the majesty of it all. Fragments of these stories have permeated my adult life, mostly in dreams and drunken conversations. Thank you Dan Simmons. Thank you, Quinn. Thank you Joyce Rhodes... R.I.P., Gram.

The Fall of Hyperion was the peak of this series. Endymion and Rise had some cool ideas as well as my favorite character, Father-Captain De Soya, but I feel those books needed more editing or time in the oven. The whole "romance" between Raul and Aenea was weird at best and creepy af at worst.

I read this series long ago, out of sequence which was perfect given the context. It was Hard to read because the shrike was so awful. I knew about the bird, so I hated thinking about it before it was completely described. I avoided the series but couldn’t avoided buying the other books. (Long before the internet, kids). So I did read it all. Devastating. How anyone could write this was hard to believe, but I’ve been having this reaction since the early 60’s. There are so 43:20 many authors I’d like to read for the first time again but it doesn’t ever work that way. 43:12 43:13 You just cant. Great authors change in ways you cant undo. It was many, many moons ago when I stumbled into your channel. I was younger then, bumbling around the GOT blogosphere. I liked your enthusiasm and perspective on the tales of our times and your ability to articulate them well. Your content is improving the more you put out; the channel is aging well YEARS after I began following you. This is the first time I have interacted on this channel. So, unlike Game of Thrones, your channel keeps getting better! Great book! I am so glad that you recommended this! THANK YOU for breaking me out of the CivilWar/Child Rearing/Zombie/Apocolypse/Zombie Apocolypse/Gardening/Spy vs. Spy genres I have been loitering around for the past couple of years. Hyperion brought back my joy for sci-fi! In a big way. The only thing I would have touched on is what truly made the first two books: the anticipation of each character's story. I could not get to the next one fast enough. Each one left the reader dripping with anticipation for the next. More than anything that made the book fun- at least a considerable component. Your recommendations have been pretty spot on; damn good read, and your leg work is greatly appreciated, sir.

TBP is my favorite "serious" scifi, and i'd love to hear your opinion on the "Hitch Hiker's Guide", especially the being that thinks Dent has a vendetta against it, only to learn Dent was unawares. Adam's work starts to spiral around that time and i think you're ability to unravle that would give it great justice.

I happened on 'Quinns Ideas' by chance. I have never in my 50 plus, plus years read actual science fiction but something about whatever the video was about peaked my interest...or, it might be because I was burned so badly by literally smoking hot oil from my elbows down, spent almost a month in the Dallas TX Parkland Burn unit and had to have a lot of skin grafts. I had nothing else to distract me from my pain so decided to give it a try...I am so glad it happened. my hands were wrapped and I could do nothing with them so I had a nurse tape my stylus to my hand wrappings and put my tablet on the tray in front of me...I didn't want to commit to a series as long as 'Dune' so i looked at all the titles of his videos and compared them to something i could borrow from the library. I settled on 'Hyperion' without watching his video, liking the name and thinking it was a stand alone book rather than a series. I read it. I loved it! Really loved it!!! Happily knowing by then it was a series, I read 'The Fall of Hyperion' then...OMG my library didn't carry 'Endymion'. SCANDALOUS! I purchased it. Now I ordered the box set because there is still one more in the series and I will likely read them again. I am out of the hospital now and will add science fiction to my library fom here on out. I will be out of work a while so I may even try 'Dune'. Thank you so much for introducing me to a genre I would not otherwise have tried. 💕🐾💙

I love your longer videos whereby you go in depth into a story. Some ambient space horror music would be nice if the volume is really low right now. Currently I am listening to ambient Dead Space osts while listening to you.

Really entertaining video, thank you. It's been a long time since I read the 4-book series, and I think I'm due for a re-read soon. Looking at the comments here, it seems to be a somewhat polarizing series. I really enjoyed it myself and it's stuck with me for a long time: I've gone over Hyperion and its themes in my head again and again, moreso than with any other series other than Dune. There's a lot to enjoy in it, and I appreciate not only the scope and ambition of the story, but also that there's a (bittersweet) conclusion to mull over.

Thank you for covering these books. These are the best books I have read since Dune. The characters are so complex it is interesting to see your take on them. Consul- Environmenatlist and anti technology. He is the instrument of Gladstone and is tied to Gladstone and the ousters those who live in harmony without the technocore. Brawne- She represents humanity in the bridge between humans and robotics/technology. Other characters represent the technology side. Martin- represents human suffering but also the boredom of eternal life and disillusionment from technology. Sol - Duty to God vs gods duty to humanity. Kassad- the ethics of warfare. Hoyt- obviously the resurrection and the horror of eternal life. Het- In the end religious technology. I could go on as I am sure you understand but thought I would throw out so.e flavors to add to yours.

I really love listening to these stories. I'm not a reader myself but i am fascinated by your stories you tell. They are almost like audiobooks to me. I can only hope they will make more sci-fi tv-series of these stories in the future, just like Netflix is making an adaptation of the "three body problem", they better now screw that up.

A compelling, mysterious and existential book. It absolutely gripped me. It's also a bleak, cold sci-fi tale that keeps you at arm's length and only gets more remote as it moves into the second book. I definitely need to revisit both.

I feel like Simmons really dropped the ball concerning the Bikura and the Labyrinths in the last two books. He essentially hand waves their origins and any mystery connecting them to something ancient or unknowable, ruining any potential interest or future story. One of the biggest problems with Endymion and Rise of Endymion is that the answer to every mystery is a sloppy retcon or the technocore. To me, it seemed obvious Simmons just wanted to be done with the entire universe, so answered every lingering question with “It was the boogie man (technocore)” or “(sloppy mental gymnastics backflip and shoving a square peg into a round hole) IT WAS THE VOID AND STUFF”.

bro i was trying to remember your name or the name of your channel for a couple of weeks, i had too much subs on my original google account to find you, then it finally popped into my head last night, and i watched 3 hours in a few videos last night, but then lately ive been thinking about hyperion and the shrike but i clicked on your videos to see if you had anything new on the shrike or hyperion and to see you have such a huge video recently on it, even live!!! makes me so happy. its my day off and imma go snuggle up in bed and turn the lights off and pull my blackout curtains and listen to this whole stream. bless! also, have you heard of the game "the iron lung" there's an event in it called "the quiet rapture" which, even though its not a long game and not much is explained, itd be so interesting for you to make a video with your thoughts and maybe a theory on it and then let commenters talk about theirs. theres something similar to that on reddit but its really tedious to look through because a lot of the threads only have 2 or 3 comments.

I listened to the audio books and they are magnificent. From the Canterbury Tales approach in the first book to the very end. I feel that the Shrike is a tool, been wielded by either sides in the future conflict. I will tell people about the quality of his writing with the one scene in the 3rd book recounting the butchering of the Ousters. It's a testament to his skill that it made me physically sick for the first time ever. I also owe him so much for the AI goal of the final torture sequence. It solved so much for an event in one book and has given me the most exciting story arc to try and craft in my second book.

I just finished Fall o’Hyperion a few days ago. I think what I love the most about sci-fi is how I am usually pleasantly mentally overwhelmed afterward; just sitting in the cosmic soup of reflection and contemplation. The first half of this series has definitely taken me to that place once again. And does anyone feel like things like Terminator and even 50 First Dates drew inspiration from this series ?

The more I think about the idea of our machines creating a device that becomes so valuable to us that it is impossible to imagine living without it, but also enables them to infiltrate every aspect of our life AS WELL as provide the room, the worlds they need to grow. It seems like such an accurate "machine" idea. It really is a genius plot thread

Fantasy recommendation: Tooth and Claw by James Silke. It's book 3 of a series, but you don't really have to read the first two. It's also a bit hard to find, but you seem to be a pretty resourceful dude.
