It's wasn't a fatal blow because the lion grabbed the hyena on the side of the face near the eye & jaw. That won't kill the hyena. Had the lion grabbed that hyena in the throat... now that would of been lights out!

He will recover. He is a subadult. Hyenas are incredibly durable and resilient. They survive the worst of injuries like cut ears and broken leg. That’s nothing to a hyena

The hyena that was caught by the lion was a subadult. You can recognize that on his white fur, it turns brown when he reaches adulthood. The hyenas that came biting the lion were adults (brown fur). The lion couldn’t handle more than 4 or 5 bites of them. He released the young hyena as a result

The same with lionesses. 1 lioness can't beat a male lion 1:1; however, if she can get 4 or 5 of her sisters to join her, the male lion is going to back down. The Hyena's power comes from their numbers. Without those 6 or 7 hyenas coming to the injured hyena's rescue, that hyena would be dead. Case closed.

Don't know if any of you have seen the film The Life of Pi, but in it, there is a prolonged scene on sea where a bunch of animals were stranded along with the main actor on a large raft. A hyena succeeds in killing an orangutan, and the tiger, who was hidden under a large canvas, and suddenly lunged on the hyena, and the hyena was dead in what appeared to be one or two seconds. So why does it take a lion minutes to kill a hyena? Is that tiger scene in the film just Hollywood fiction, or not? In other words, would it take a tiger just as long as it does for a lion to kill a hyena?
