    Happy to help! I would suggest mixing a bit more flake into the gel when spraying to help cover better. Another ounce or two per quart of gel.

    Fantastic job only 1 Question is after sanding with fine paper like 600 or 800 why not just clear it instead of polishing with a good quality clear would save a lot of polishing and as well seal the gel coat from getting omeasos I think it's called where the water gets into the gel coat done that a few times on boats ...

  • @TNels

    @TNels

    3 жыл бұрын

    That very well could be done. I just buffed it and will keep a good coat of wax on it. I'm not an experienced painter and the gel is much more forgiving when spraying.

    Im about to attempt to restore an old nitro bass boat and want to flake it. Still gotta find a gelcoat to use. Just curious, it looked like you hand sanded it all after the final clear coat? Would using an orbital be fine?

  • @TNels

    @TNels

    Ай бұрын

    I used a block so that the finished product would have a super flat finish. You could use and orbital or a DA and it will sand out smooth and buff to a shine, but it won’t be very flat, it will end up kinda wavy. I can assure you that the original finish on this boat was no where near as flat as it is now after being block sanded. There’s a few spots where I just used a DA and that looks close to the factory finish.

  • @TNels

    The yellow and grey are both primers. Black base was gelcoat, as well as the silver flake mixed with clear gel. There is no color in the gel, it is only clear gelcoat with silver or blue metal flake mixed in. Finial layer of clear is plain clear gelcoat, no flake in the final layer. The link in the description explains it very well.

    Why is it dull afterwards and you have to sand and buff it!?!? If it's clear coat then why is it dull!? When you get done spraying clear on a vehicle it's shiny! I thought he was sanding after the color coat wich is a nono because you cut the metal flakes with the sandpaper so I'm not sure what's going on here.. 🤔

  • @TNels

    @TNels

    Жыл бұрын

    I don't know the chemical properties that cause that. But this is gel coat and not paint, it behaves very differently. It lays down super thick with tons of orange peel. I sanded the final layer of clear after the flake was down. Keep in mind this lays down at 20-30 mils, so sanding the last coat of clear doesn't get into the layer with the flake.
