Great point about diddle quality with the grip. I see way too many drummers just "throwing" the diddles and not controlling them.

Nice to see the relation between the single flammed mill and the cheese having the same sticking. Nice job as usual.

Interesting, but I thought this was a poorly done video, I know I expect I am getting boos from the audience. I apologise upfront for my ignorance of Hybrid Rudiments, I am a Progressive Metal Drummer (Published Author with Alfred Music) and professional instructor, and I am brand new to Hybrid Rudiments. Therefore, maybe I am just missing something, so it could very well be me, and if it is I apologize profusely. At no point in the video is the "Cheese" ever explained on its own (maybe it is not suppose to be). I got to hear how a flam accent is performed and how middle school students should know how to play one. Then I heard about how it relates to a Single Flammed Mill... GREAT I know those rudiments, but what is the "Cheese"? I then heard about mechanics of a diddle and adding a flam, so WHAT IS THE CHEESE!!!! I am assuming... and it is only an assumption that the Cheese is a Flam followed by a double... but I could be wrong. If you already are familiar with Hybrid Rudiments then I am sure that knowing how the fulcrum works well with the rudiment is just wonderful.... BUT WHERE THE HELL IS THE CHEESE?! Please feel free to criticize what I have written, but if I had an instructor who taught a rudiment and never once told me what the specific rudiment was, I would be reassessing their ability to instruct. Maybe my background of 28 years in the Army has taught me to be analytical and break things down to their basic parts. And this is no critique on Mr. Aungst's ability he looks like an amazing player and I am sure he is a wonderful human... I mean that with total sincerity. Mr. Aungst, in future, pretend that the audience has NEVER seen the rudiment you are talking about. Ensure in your instruction that there should be no room for interpretation, it should be crystal clear. Try staring a lesson with... "here is a cheese" then play it, nothing else, just "the cheese". And for those of you who say "but he did" then tell me where, show me exactly where it is explained where is the "Cheese"? Then break it down and then say how other rudiments can be used to learn it. I apologize if what I am saying seems derogatory, it is not meant to be. But I watched the video three times, and after the third gave up. I think I know what "the Cheese" is because I have some written printouts of hybrid rudiments, but your lesson in no way helped me with my quest. Sincerely, have a Happy New Year! Karl

Karl Sloman I know this is really late and you might have figured it out by now but you are right the cheese is a is a flam accent but the first note is a diddle. look up cheesy poofs and it has a bunch of those in that exercise, most of the time they are used in flam fives as well.

You can’t here the flam in the first note of the diddle because it is going to be played fast at the top speed tom is playing the cheese at the flam is more incorporated into the diddle so it is very hard to hear
