Yeah Maria is Hwasa's Christian name she got when she changed religions and got baptized. She made it in relation to her many 'personalities' - Hwasa the performer, Hyejin her personality around others, and Maria who she really is. And because of the criticisms she received as she developed the thicker performer personality who wants to tell her inner self she's worth everything and is great.

Twit: Yes that’s exactly who you think it is Maria: Maria is Hwasa’s Christian name (idk im not Christian so there might be another name for it) and this song is written for Hwasa herself. Im a bit: the instrument is called a đàn tranh in my country (Vietnam); originated from China’s guzheng. The same is with the Japanese Koto and in this video, the Korean Gayageum.

It actually means "light" and can imply "hero"...AleXa made use of the same double entendre in her song "Villain" (no relation to the K/DA song of the same name). One thing I've found in KPOP is that song titles get re-used a lot for different songs, sometimes releases close together!

"Maria" is her Religious Name. The song to from herself, to herself. The song is about her telling herself that she's can be whatever she wants to be and thats its ok to let loose occasionally and break standerd regardless of what others say. The MV Visuals show the 2 sides of her. Hwasa(Black Hair)- The Original, a bit more restricted(hence the Strayjacket) and Hurt. Maria(Red Hair)- The Free Bird. The Version of herself without restrictions.(The Latin dance break in the song was her offically breaking free of f restraints put on Hwasa) Thats my interpretation at least^^

Thanks for this reaction. In the Twit video that was her best friend since middle school and current Mamamoo member Wheein that appeared in the scene with her. I would highly recommend reacting to more Mamamoo videos. Their vocal talent will make it worth the time. There is another Hwasa solo that is beautiful, LMM. It is not a "pop" type song, more of a ballad.

The red haired hwasa in Maria is like an alter ego of herself (as seen in 17:57). There’s the black haired Hwasa being self conscious and she’s always hurt. She “dies” and kind of reincarnates into the red haired Hwasa, more confident about herself and not caring about haters, almost to an extreme degree. If you rewatch the video, you can see how she acts super differently when she has black vs red hair.

Hwasa has written and/or composed on all of these songs and most of her solo work

In Twit Simcheong is in reference to an old korean tale. It's too long for me to type out her (although can be told in a few decent paragraphs, we're not talking a novel) but worth a google if you want to check more. It's relation to the song is that Hwasa is actually calling her lover a twit for putting her on a pedestal. Everything he does is in dedication for her and with no consideration for his own needs or wants, whereas her part in the relationship there's other things she needs too (her music, career etc)

The cigarette scene in the beginning of "Maria" is a quote from the Italian movie "Malena" (released in 2000) where a stunningly beautiful woman lives in a backward town in the Italian countryside during WWII. All men desire her, so when she takes a cigarette out in a café, they all want to light it from all sides. I just wanna point out something. The opening scene of Maria, with Hwasa holding the cigarette and the people trying to light it for her, is similar to the scene of the movie Malena with Monica Bellucci. If you've ever watched the movie you'll know what i am talking about! I think that says a lot, such a powerful scene!!

I really love Mamamoo in general and all the members have amazing solo work but I think Hwasa might be my favorite. And I really hope that she established her sound with Maria and I'm a 빛 because BOY DOES IT SUIT HER VOICE

If you look closely, the meaning of this song is to connect with Maria... No matter what, my heart was shocked again... HWASA voice HWASA charm will only become more and more attractive... I really love her soooooo much

'I'm a B' initial scene can be compared to a birth, plus Hwasa has the same dress used in Maria, connecting the two mvs and themes as Maria was like a rebirth to her and the water (another recurring theme) represents life. Basically this mv is an alternative end for Maria mv, here Hwasa embraces her bad side, "If I don't became a bit*h I can't survive" is what Hwasa thought while working on new music and it's the concept of the title track. When she opens the door the scene is like watching inside that box she came out but as you can see everything is black outside instead inside the box is bright because Hwasa bacame the light who swallowed the darkness. As we will see later there are 2 Hwasa, one watching inside the box and one actually inside of it “there’s no light without shadow” as Hwasa said. The whole mv and lyrics are playing with dark and bright, white and black, you can clearly see it in this part “life is so incredible. Even if I go crazy my sin is beautiful” then “life is now so terrible I can’t cry even if I smile”. Her sin is beautiful because she’s doing what she loves, music, but she feels like she’s sinning because she’s ‘mistreating’ herself and the people she loves. This is her guilty pleasure: pushing herself beyond her limits. We can spot flowers in the whole mv, the pictures in the blue room, she’s wrapped under plastic like a flower in a bouquet and in the room with white furnitures, the only touch of color are the flowers…Hwasa loves flowers and her symbol is a flower. Talking about this room, in Maria mv Hwasa wearing a sort of straitjacket was monitored in a white tiles room, she was cornered by pencils (comments) pointing at her…now she’s free standing bold on those white tiles furnitures, this time she has a pencil in her hand and she’s completing a crossword with ‘Hwasa’ and ‘Crazy’. Basically she’s saying I’m crazy, so what? Again with the lyrics ‘In a word I’m out of my mind so far I’m alive’ like she has to go crazy working on music to really live. In the ending scene there is another recurring theme since Maria, the snake, another symbol of rebirth, transformation. Historically, serpents and snakes represent fertility or a creative life force. Of course that scene is hinting to another mv she will release for another track from Guilty Pleasure album or connect to her next comeback. Hwasa co-wrote and co-composed 2 out of 3 tracks and this is the first time she teams up with non-Korean music producers. With this single album she became the 1st soloist of 2021 to enter on Billboard world digital song sales chart with 2 songs in top10. 'I' a B' topped iTunes in 19 countries and QQ music chart in China.

Yeah, both are traditional Asian instruments, but the one used in Lit is traditional Chinese, meanwhile in I'm a 빛, it's a traditional Korean instrument (If judging by the instrument shown in the mv) which is an invention that is highly inspired by the traditional Chinese instrument. Both sound amazing though!

one of the things i love about mamamoo and hwasa is that their lyrics are meaningful. I feel connected and those lyrics inspired me. They also involve in writing and composing their music (not all Kpop idols are allowed to do that) so when they sing the music really come from their heart.

That traditional instrument is a geomungo or black zither. It's different then a gayageum (which is similar to a Japanese koto) in that it is played with a plectrum and it's fretted. But they are very cool.

You should react to more MAMAMOO contents. It's worth it. They're the kind of girl group who likes to break stereotypes and push boundaries. They write and cowrite their own songs and they are respected and well-known in South Korea because of their pure talent. They won QUEENDOM (which is a famous talent competition within girl groups in South Korea) and also won IMMORTAL SONGS (a singing competition for artists) in their "rookie years". They are an epitome of a real artist. And FYI, MAMAMOO is also a 3rd Gen Kpop Group just like Blackpink, Twice, Exo, BTS etc. I suggest you react their Introduction Guide first for you to know them well.

TWIT swept charts in South Korea and got real time all kill (first place on EVERY SINGLE chart) plus 2 victories on music shows, it has entered the Top 100 of U.S. iTunes Top Songs chart to currently become the top-selling Kpop song in America plus got amazing results WORLDWIDE too landing on 22nd place in iTunes chart...I'm not talking about the kpop chart but the overall chart! This MV and lyrics are packed with a lot of interesting references and symbolisms. In the lyrics she uses "delicate Shim Cheongie" ...referring to an old korean tale. Shim Cheong (a filial daughter) was sold as a virginal sacrificial offering to the sea, in this way her blind father could make the temple donation needed to miraculously restore his sight. With the help of the Dragon King of the sea, she returned to the land and eventually became a queen. So Shim Chung is sacrificing yourself for the benefits or happiness of others, it means a great love without boundary. There are'nt that many songs with this concept, telling him/her you should live for yourself don't breath only for me...usually it's the other way round, "give me more attention, give me more love". Mamamoo are famous for writing songs with interesting concept, empowering, respect, love yourself and so on. In the beginning of the mv she's reading 'Animal Farm' by George Orwell which is all about the constraints of society and following the rules…she tosses it aside. Her wrapped up in the plastic bag, coming out of a wardrobe crying, walking and dancing with confidence on a table and no one is paying attention to her while when she has a lighter skin tone and cuter hairstyle boys are at her feet...all is a clear reference to how women are treated in korean society. The girl embracing Hwasa is Wheein, another Mamamoo member and her best friend since middle school. Her cameo is interesting too...if you consider the lyrics of this song and Wheein solo 'Easy' it's like watching the opposite sides of the same coin. Plus Wheein is Hwasa source of strenght and comfort, you can see her leaning on Wheein and Wheein embracing Hwasa. Their makeup is natural and they're almost nacked because they can be themselves with each other. In the all black scene where you can see her and the legs of a man; it's like she abused of his love so much that in the end killed that feeling and when she understood what she did to him she tried to take the boy back but in the end he leaves her. Many people pointed out those blatantly fake birds...I mean, they could use CG like the leopard in Egotistic MV but I think they did it on purpose. A bare tree with fake/dead birds. Everything is white, birds, dress and background, so lonely. In Korea and the Middle East it is the norm that white symbolizes time of mourning and funerals. It is an interesting predicament that theorists find white relays the message of clarity. It could be thought that once someone has passed away there may be clarity in the peoples’ lives, or lack there of. And right after compare the black scene...so going back to the theory of the mourning and understanding (clarity) what she lost. the scene where she's dancing and partying with so many people while he's there, he stays still on that bed. They look at each other so she nows he's lonely and sad there but she's smiling at him while dancing, like a spite to hurt him once again. In the end the flower on the ground represents the beautiful relationship she had, the beautiful love he gave to her. When he decides to leave her, the guy tosses that flower on the ground and she tramples on it like she did with his feelings. Hwasa said Maria is the crystallized tears and sweat that she shed. The MV starts with a crime scene, Hwasa is dead and people are still trying to take some shots of her. A red hair Maria (an alter ego after Hwasa baptismal name) is watching the scene careless. Hwasa funeral, only empty chairs with invitation on it and with its back turned, nobody cares like she says in the lyrics. Here an homage to the most beautiful and powerful scene in Malena movie, with all those men offering their lighter to her. Malena is the most beautiful woman of a SMALL village (it can be a comparison to South Korea restricted mentality), because of her looks and her solitary state, she is an object of lust for all the town's men and of hatred for its women…after many vicissitudes and a very hard time she understood that her beauty is her salvation. So she cuts her black hair and dyes by red her hair, changing her attitude as well. We can clearly see a difference among Hwasa and Maria, both in outfits and attitude. In the table scene we can see a bloodstained Maria with rubber boots and a pretty simple outfit at a table with people all dressed up, they're keyboard warriors. Again lyrics "You all worked hard hating. If you knock me down. Does that feed you?" She's serving them with all sort of things. The table is full with jewels, trove of tapes, mics, cds, diamonds…but they're just looking at those picky. Maria with a bored face is watching them and then she starts happily eating a brain. The difference among Maria and those people is so strong and impactful. I've also read that eat someone's brain means pester someone. The triangular tub is also interesting, she's bathing in milk and rose petals like a Queen and her skin is so white, but once again she looks bored and then she starts to make 'no' gesture with her finger with a smirking face. Like 'I don't need to be pale, I'm beautiful like this'… probably a references to all hateful comments she gets about her bronze skin since ages. We're back to Hwasa, she's trapped like in a mental hospital with a straitjacket, all her body is constrained by laces…this once again can be interpreted as the restricted South Korea mentality. They're monitoring her, pencils (comments) are pointed at her and she is trying to escape from this kind of net (network) until she finds a crown with diamonds and nails (representing the double faces of success). Ink-stained hands Hwasa decides to wear the crown, She got ink on her hands while fighting malicious comments, in fact we can see her beating her fists on the ground and shouting. The triangular tub is back but this time we can see Maria and Hwasa looking at each other through a bloody water. A triangle is a figure linked to different trinities like mind, body & spirit; past, present & future; thought, feeling & emotion and creation, preservation and destruction. And, personally, all those fit this MV perfectly. And now we discover Hwasa was not dead at all. Like it was all a dream, in fact she's on a coach with scissor in her hands, she is alone with her thoughts when suddenly Mamamoo members appear with big smiles. She said many times Mamamoo are her strength and she was able to face difficulties since trainee period only because they were together. The whole lyrics are beautiful and powerful but sad at the same time. She said this is an exciting yet sad song, she likes those kind of songs because they resemble life. With this album Hwasa became the first Korean female solo artist to reach #1 on iTunes US. She co-wrote and co-composed 4 songs out of 6 of this album…an amazing album with powerful collaborations, a Queen like always.
