The ol school 272xp at 72.2cc and 52x34 bore and stroke can lay down some serious powa with the right mods. I’d say they can run with the 372 and lay it on thicker in the torque dept. 72.2cc vs 70.7cc isn’t that much difference in displacement however the torque of the 272 seems greater all things being equal. Another oft-overlooked gem 💎 saw is the Husqvarna 262xp. At 4.8hp stock and weighing in at only 12.8lbs a guy/gal can make a helluva firewood saw with some well thought out mods. The only drawback is that the saw uses the Husqvarna small mount so 16”-20” bars are what’s commonly run. In this smaller wood this saw can , and will , stock for stock, produce with a 372xp and with some flow enhancements outcut it whilst being considerably lighter. The engineers at Husqvarna really did an excellent job designing this saw for its intended application. I’ve got one with a righteous muffler mod and some flow-enhancements that zips right along. A new “favorite” saw 😂

Cool vid, Those carbs for the 044 are around for like 50 bucks used 120 new :( WORTH making that saw right. Wonder if the carb just needs the diaphragm looked at? Maybe its unhooked from the metering lever? Agree.... an old 372 will run with the newest saw in that weight & displacement class. Done right will surpass the new ones :) Nice set of 372 raw materials to work with, looking forward to your builds :)

I have a 372xp x torq. I love that thing dearly. Rescued it from a pawn shop with a broken handle, a stripped out tensioner. Took it home, sorted it out and got it in the wood. Pulled a 32” bar with a full comp chain in pine and it was asking for more. Such a treat.

Many many many builders have gotten significant games off from the 372 stock. Many have put on the 75 cc oem kit ported and have had very fast cutting hard cutting durable work saws. Some guys can get performance out of aftermarket stuff but end up blowing them up due to lower quality standards.

If you compare the 52mm to the factory 51.4, the 52mm has large transfers like a 50mm cylinder, while the 51.4 has smaller transfers similar to a 365. Outside of porting and squish, I think the issue is case volume vs cylinder volume. It really seems the 50mm is the sweet spot for most builds. That said I have built plenty 48mm 365 SP's as they are more common locally, and they run very well.

Tinman, your channel is wonderful. Thank you for inspiring me to work on chainsaws. I enjoyed your porting and 288 Farmertec series quite a lot and am glad to see you are now featuring the 372. I am considering a 372 Farmertec build - mostly for some tinkering practice and will replace some parts OEM from the get-go. My question to you: Which Farmertec saw do you think has the most widely available parts in Canada? I was trying to compare the 440, 460, and 372 - the Husqvarna seems to have a slight edge. Just hoping to pick a model that will be fixable into the future. Thanks again and all the best from Terrace, BC. Clem

My go to is my 036. I would love to start looking at some husky saws and kind of do a hand in hand comparison. Almost positive the ones that run good are my favorite. As far as dolmar goes my father in law has a makita 6410. Real good power for a 60cc saw and I’ll readily admit it outcuts my freshly broken in 036 stihl. That being said I’d still grab the stihl over it because of how much smaller it is and lighter. Seems like a very large saw for 60cc. Seems small when you get to nearly 80cc with that chassis

I just have the Holtzfforma g372xp I put together. Because as you said, nobody sells them. So I built a play pretend 372. I wanted to see what they're like, & not spend a pile of cash. I hogged out my lower transfers, buckhorned the intake, tossed the cyl base, & put a fish gill opisite the pipe. I ovaled, & polished the exhaust, but left it alone @ 102° otherwise. Int 76°, 26° blowdown. I have about 5 mins on it since. But as you know, it's a different saw now. I originally assembled it bone stock, besides chamfering the ports, & piston. I wanted to see if I could leave it alone. Ya know, it was...Mehh. Very, Very torquey, yes. But slow on the snap, & kinda punky @ wot. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised. But knew I'd have to dig inside, & do the tweaks. It floats in my hands, it's almost bizarre how comfortable it is. Sorry, I'll wrap it up. Um, I did scratch the con rod with my file. They are still a bit soft. So I'm glad I didn't go crazy on my porting. That's funny about Charlie with the shot. She's so cute, & happy. I miss my kids when they were littles. The 268 is a good solid 162 chassis saw. If it's an XP or a Special it's a closed port saw, and a bit stronger than a 266 out of the box, if it's just a plain 268 it's an open port saw, and while it isn't going to set the world on fire, it is a good solid reliable 66cc saw on the same pro chassis as the XP and 272.

A 266 with a 52mm top end is definitely more a 272 than a big bore 266. Really depends on how much of the 272 you put on there. IMHO, the 50mm top ends on them are the sweet spot for the case volume to cylinder volume balance. If it's x torque porting is not reccomended. Fyi. They are different beasts
Imho The walbro HD-17 is the ticket for the 044. The saw will perform with that carb and some flow enhancements Fo sure ! Not cheep by any means but STIHL available and worth every penny
Hey tinman!!! I own 7 372xps. It's my go to saw. I have ported the mufflers on 4 of them. I try to pick them up almost every time I find one for sale.

Your absolutely right about the 372 Tinman. If anyone wants to watch great carburetor tuning video Tinman has the best one I’ve ever watched.

Savor all the moments you get with your little one. My boy is almost two now, it seems like he was brand new yesterday. Excited for 372 content!
Yes. Yes. Yes. 372xp. My favorite saw. I have one that I kinda ported. Without a wheel. More less just a clean up and polish on the exhaust side. Barely touched the transfers. Base casket delete. I really surprised myself with it. The first saw I ever done any kind of work like that to.
