The reason this episode came about is because of how many critics mentioned the way the showrunner and writers used their own way of talking on the show - coined "Buffyspeak" - that made it so good. So they decided to make an episode with almost no talking to prove the critics wrong... and as you figured out, it's one of the favorites with both fans and critics.

Fun fact, this episode was the very last episode of Buffy to air in the 90s! Echoing people who say you should NOT watch 6x07 as a random episode, as it's really not suitable for out-of-context reactions. 5x07 Fool For Love is a great deep dive into slayer history, and 2x03 School Hard, 2x06 Halloween or 3x12 Helpless are great one-off episodes if you want to see the high school era of Buffy.

Explanations for this episode: Riley is Teaching Assistant for Psychology Professor Walsh, he also works at 'The Initiative' a covert government operation studying demons which is run by Professor Walsh. The Initiative know about monsters and the Scooby Gang (Buffy and Friends) know about monsters, but the ordinary townspeople do not. Spike is a Vampire who was captured by the Initiative and a chip was installed in his head which stops him hurting people (at least physically) he escaped and Giles is 'babysitting' him. Buffy and the Scoobies have noticed commando guys running around but do not know about the Initiative, the Initiative are equally unaware of the Slayer. This is the first we see of Tara, her relationship with Willow comes later although the seeds are sown here.

"It's *June*, bitches!" was fucking fantastic, thank you so much for that lolol I'm sure somebody beat me to it, but they have a plot mechanism explained in the first few episodes: Sunnydale is on a Hellmouth, a gate between our world and the Hell dimensions, and everyone who lives there has a sort of magic blind spot where they don't really question why their tiny town has 13 cemeteries and people keep dying mysterious deaths. Some know, others live in blissful ignorance. If you're gonna keep going with "Buffy", I really, really, really rec the episode "Passion". It's an incredible episode anyway but also a far more "classic" horror vampire take to keep diving through all the genres this show touches on during its run.

Glad you enjoyed this one more! :) Yeah, Wiccans are people IRL who often refer to themselves as witches or whatnot, but they don't claim to have supernatural powers. I think the group Willow (the red head) and Tara (the blonde) joined was a Wiccan group, if I remember correctly, because they're both "real" witches with powers and were looking for community. If you continue and do a third Buffy, I'd recommend S2E6, Halloween. :) Really enjoyed your reaction to this one!

You have got to remember you are watching these completely out of context. This episode has a lot of reveals for the later Seasons. You really need to watch the whole show fro the very start to appreciate how brilliant the writing and character development is. I think The best episode of S4 by far. Brilliant innovative writing, The Gentlemen were among the scariest of BTVS monsters. The cast recalled it was actually exhausting to film with the effort that had to be put in talk but stay silent. The nightmare of being cut into and not being able to scream shown when the student is being held down while The Gentlemen extract his heart, really frightening. The comedy between Xander and Spike brings a little light relief, and also our introduction to Tara. A great stand alone episode. This is a brilliant episode but, I feel there are more in S5 and and in S6 that even eclipse this. This was a fantastic stand alone episode and fan favourite.

If you're going for part 3 I recommend you disregard anyone who suggests you do the musical episode from season 6 (once more with feelings) - as it is very plot heavy and relays heavily on the audience's familiarity with the characters and their struggles up to that point. @@not-that-Chris I debated whether or not to mention it, but ultimately I think that the Musical aspect of it is such a novelty for the show and the execution of it so unique, that unless a person really likes musicals, it is a bit of a turn off (and even then they did, they might be turned off by the actual singing..) It is such a plot-heavy, _music_ heavy episode that if it did matter to him, he might just end up being bored.. I know some people are sticklers for spoilers, but he has already put himself at a point to counter that by picking to start his affiliation with the show with an episode like "the Body" - so I didn't think this would be such a major point of contention for him to learn a little of what he was getting himself into by choosing to go along with suggestions from the comments.

As someone who watched the show in its entirety within a couple of years after it aired, I was blindsided by your comment that it was nostalgic for its film quality and sound design. I would love to hear more on what made you say that! Also, I'm sure you hear this about every show you do a random reaction to, but if there is ONE show to watch in its entirety, this is the one. I can tell you are interested in the history of television and the art form. If it helps at all, the number of academic articles written by people who study film and writing about Buffy FAR exceeds that of any other television show! It really is that high quality, and groundbreaking of a show that goes through a tremendous evolution over the course of its run. I would watch your reactions from start to finish, and I don't think I'm the only one! If there is another random ep to react to, I would say it's season episode 3, Witch. It shows how far the show has come from its humble origins, but also nails the genuinely fun, hilarious and light tone of the early episodes. Other people are recommending other objectively "better" episodes, but I think this is not only a great episode but also one that complements the two you've seen to give you a sense of overall what this show is like. I hope this trio of episodes inspires you to go on the full journey!

I will echo what others have said, if you decide to do a part 3 go with either 2x6 or 3x13, ABSOLUTELY NOT anything from S6 or S7. A full reaction from the beginning of the series would be good too. Just to clarify, the whole town does not know about monsters, like they show here on TV, they thought it was a freak laryngitis epidemic. Whenever weird supernatural shit happens in the show, the residents outside the main cast tend to rationalize it as something mundane, however improbable.

As you watch the show, 'regular people' not being more aware of what is going on is one of the very obvious conveniences of the writing. Simply put, the show isn't about the world finding out about all the monsters and Buffy being famous. It's about using the mystical elements (demons, monsters, villains, magic, etc.) as metaphors for the pitfalls and challenges of mostly normal kids growing up. It's very focused on our main characters and the story needs the town folk, college kids, etc., to not have a clue no matter how many things they see, so a sort of collective amnesia mixed with denial is ever present with them. The writers make jokes about it in the dialogue from time to time, because they're aware how convenient it is, but it just never becomes a major plot point because it would completely distract from the point of the show. There are exceptions, especially in high school when Buffy had saved so many of her classmates, some repeatedly. But the show would have to seriously change tracks from what it is to tackle the issues of everyone finding out and Buffy becoming famous/infamous. So instead, they are written conveniently and we just suspend disbelief. The biggest 'Buffy's secret life exposed' moment we get is when her mother finally finds out, and it's again used as a metaphor for other real life discoveries parents sometimes don't handle well.

if you are only going to do one or two more random episodes I would recommend "school hard" from season 2. other people are recommending the wish and döppelgangland from season 3, but those really show Willow after a lot of character development and don't have the impact if you haven't been with the character for almost three seasons at that point you also could just watch the first two episodes which are a great setup to the whole series. although it really develops into something special after the first season someone recommended normal again from season 6 and I love that episode, but it really diminishes the punch that it delivers if you've only seen a handful of episodes at that point and not been watching for six seasons at that point I basically came to your channel for the Buffy and would love it if you would start watching from the beginning, but I can understand if it turns out to just not being your thing. in my opinion there is That One Episode in particular from season 6 that you should NOT watch until you have watched whole series up to that point. it's hard to avoid major spoilers about Buffy or analyses of important episodes, but you should try to do so as much as you can

Buffy is an exceptionally arc-heavy show, including multi-episode arcs, season arcs and series arcs. Even the most stand alone eps contain arc relevant information and rely heavily on character, theme and world-building development from what’s come before. There’s really no way to dip into it without context and not be lost about many aspects. And, of course, it’s worth the watch! Just my 2¢!

I believe that you have now a good idea of what the show can offer... and I'll go with those who suggest that if you are still interested, to start watching from the beginning, whether or not you're gonna make reactions to it. That said, if you're definitely against a reaction to the whole show, but still want to do a part 3 to those random reactions. I'll suggest either the pilot, which is a 2-parter (so 1x01 and 1x02), which may look rough compared to what you've seen, but at least will give you the basis to continue on your own, or an episode that relies mostly on humour like 2x06, 3x06, 3x18 or 4x09. I restrained myself to include a bunch of episodes not very much appreciated by the fandom, which I think are much better than some others with better appreciations BECAUSE they are fun (2x12, 2x20, 4x05, 4x18), there's also some I don't put in here cause even though they are mainly focused on fun, they also are character-centric episodes, and those are always more appreciated if you have witnessed the character growth (or lack of growth) from the beginning.

There are many scenes to be entertaining, underlying philosophical differences, humor, plot development, and foreshadowing that could be the next episode or 3 years later. You are doing an admirable job and the best way to watch h randomly are the more one off episodes. Hush did have many important plot elements but you can enjoy without context. Most fans favorite episode is Season 6, Episode 7…. It’s fantastic but you will not understand why it’s phenomenal. . The same for Season 4, Episode 22, Season 5, Episode 7, or any of the Season finales. An excellent one off is in Season 3, The Zeppo Factor. It is told from the perspective of Xander, the humorous boy of the group. You see the events through his eyes and since he’s not 100% sure of what’s happening, you will fit in.

Buffy was the predecessor of many tv series trends, the quiet episode was one of them. I heard somewhere if was a friend of the writer who challenge him to write a episode with the least amount of words he could. By the way one trend Buffy started too was the musical episode! And unlike most musical episode Buffy's was BRILLIANT. Please watch next "Once more with feeling" season 6 episode 7!!!

I believe Joss also was also influenced by an episode of the short lived show "Space: Above and Beyond" by Glen Morgan and James Wong (writers for The X-Files and creators of the Final Destination movies) titled "Who monitors the birds" from 1996 which has approximately 2 minutes of dialogue in 45 minutes, The show was an influence on Firefly and the remake of Battlestar Galactica

The Body is a great episode of television, and Hush is a great episode of Buffy, but if you want to watch the best episode of any TV show ever (which can be mathematically proven), then you need to watch season 6, episode 7; BUT to even have a clue, you must at least watch the last episode of season 5, and the first 6 episodes of season 6. If you can’t commit to that 8 episode arc, don’t bother. (And yes of course it’s better to watch it all from the start. But, and this makes me sad, my fave reactors, Target Audience, watched the first season, and don’t seem to want to come back for the second season, where the show really starts. :(

Yass, werk. Should he watch S6, Once More With Feeling? You already reacted to S5 The Body which occurs in the middle of dealing with Glory. Her 12 episodes are the best! Justice for S2 of Grey's. We never did get the bazooka episode. If you want some good action check out the sci-fi, spy show, Alias (ABC). Almost every episode ends on a cliffhanger. Lots of wild two-parters. Amazing A-list guest stars including Tarantino who had a recurring role on S1 & S3. Alias holds the record for longest girl fight on tv (S2 E22 "The Telling") which took four, 16-hour days to film. Alias' most watched episode is S2 E13 "Phase One" which aired after the Super Bowl & set "The Telling" in motion. S4 was Alias' most-watched season overall as its sister show, Lost, served as the lead-in. Both shows featured many of the same creators, producers, actors, & composer. Fave two-parters: S4 E21-22 & S5 E16-17. Now ya know.

I don’t think Once More With Feeling is good for random episodes. All the best parts of it are tied to the current storyline and he wouldn’t be able to appreciate it. I think a better episode would be “Anne” or maybe something like “Fool for Love”. Those episodes have enough in them to enjoy as random watches without depending on important through lines.

@@Steef_Lee It's a musical & remains episodic enough. Contextualizing serialization or avoiding spoilers aren't really the point of these asynchronous, non-linear reactions. If he can watch "The Body," he can watch OMWF. What "best of" reactions hopefully allows for is showcasing of range within a series. That's why people talk about outlier episodes. They encapsulate the spirit & tone of the show while using an episodic structure to showcase something different. Some of my favorites include: "Bang!" from Desperate Housewives. "Modern Warfare" & "Remedial Chaos Theory" from Community. "Ham Radio" & "Moon Dance" from Frasier. "Baggage," Wallpaper," & "Lateness" from Everybody Loves Raymond. "Red Team III" from The Newsroom. "Possession" & "The Nightcomers" from Penny Dreadful. "Chapter 7" from Legion. "Torando" from US of Tara. "Lows in the Mid Eighties" & "Moveable Feast" from Will & Grace. I could go on & on, but you get the idea.

for a little bit of context, Joss Wheadon wanted to make Willow Bi (which I think suits her better given her history anyway) but the Big Show in charge people thought it would be too confusing for the audience and had him make her a lesbian instead. Mark Blucas (Riley) is only 27 here not 40. The problem with your random watches is that you make statements or ask questions that are wrong or that everyone watching already knows. This wasn't a gimmick but done to prove a point. Critics always said that the dialog was what made the show good so they did one basically without any.
