@@TheRealGSmith season six has the best episode of any tv show ever which can be empirically proven, but it’s a shock that the season 5 episode wasn’t nominated But in the hour category, you are competing with legal dramas, medical dramas, then below that cop dramas. Horror and teen dramas rarely get awards.

@@RLucas3000 Definitely not. While that s6 episode is my personal favorite, the aforementioned season 5 episode is definitely the best Buffy episode in many aspects and one of the best on television. The s6 episode is very fun but not anywhere near the caliber of the other.

@@RLucas3000 😂. I love quite a few episodes of this series. But the hyperbole. That isn’t even one of my top 3 episodes of the series yet alone the best damn thing ever. Also, “Hush” isn’t the only episode to get an Emmy nod. It’s the only episode to get a non technical Emmy nod.

This is TV history.

Season 4 has some of the best stand alone episodes imo. Which doesn't make for a wonderful season overall story arc but I appreciate so many of the episodes.

The lead Gentleman is played by the legendary Doug Jones (Star Trek: Discovery, Hellboy, Shape of Water, Pan's Labyrinth, Hocus Pocus, What We Do In the Shadows and so much more). Also, not only is there no dialogue for most of the show, the rest of the dialogue is all about talking, wanting to talk, not being able to talk and so on. (Buffy and Riley babbling, Riley talking to Forrest about not being able to tell people about their secret identities, Xander not committing to telling Anya what he feels about her, Willow's Wicca group being 'all talk', Tara being silenced by the mean girls that group, Xander wanting Spike to shut up, Olivia telling Giles 'enough talking'...). So the problem of the week also moves the plot along in many of the ongoing stories.

The visual gags were great. Xander's confusion about Buffy's staking motion, Buffy's outrage at the drawing of her hips, Anya's index finger poking, Spike's obscene gesture at Xander(the English "Fuck you" that stems from the French practice of chopping off Longbow archer's fingers) that skated right past the censors; and let's not forget Buffy brutally and casually snapping the civilian's wrist in town. The whole episode is a real demonstration of the show's prowess.

Much like the Italian and French bicep slap and the fanciful origin of "Fuck you"("Pluck yew" also related to drawing a Yew Longbow, or "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" written into British ship's logs as the sailor's charge for smuggling women aboard for sex) these things trace back into deep historical memory, and Rome was the mother to us all in the West.

Love prof Walsh “talking about communication, talking about language, not the same thing”. The whole episode is focused on communication. Different forms (verbal, non verbal, written, body language etc), at mis-understanding communication and sharing information. Fantastic idea and brilliantly executed.

Yeah, the episode is case study about communication. Noticeably, lack of verbal is easily dealt with by written/body language and occasionally non-verbal means were even superior eg. Ruffy overcoming verbal obstacles and finally kiss, Willow's warm "hi" to Giles and Xanya get their affairs done with a simple body gesture.

"Patrolling." "Patrolling?" "Uh...patrolium." Great save Buffy! 😄

SUCH a good episode. The script, music, character design and make-up, EVERYTHING comes together perfectly here.

Buffy tells Riley she's going on patrol, and when he asks her about it, she says "petroleum" as if that would make any sense, then changes the subject. Riley then says he's "grading papers," a much better cover, but Buffy is taking the class, and so if she hadn't had any papers to turn in, than what was he "grading?"

@@tananario23 Sure, but you also were not working more than full time as a secret government military operative. The point of it was that he was lying about what he had planned because he couldn't say what he was really doing. Buffy's comment was a clue to the audience.

A lot of people miss the bullying of Tara by the Wiccan group. "Yea, Tara. Everyone be quite so Tara can talk." knowing that Tara has a stutter, and calling attention to a person with a stutter can make it worse, which it did, and then Tara went silent again. As a person who was bullied in school (though not because of a stutter), I can say with 100% certainty that the group bullied her into silence.

Fully agree that silencing Tara was intentional. Totally a Mean Girls thing to do. But I don't think that Tara has a stutter. I think she has Opthalmophobia, or the fear of being perceived. She starts to speak up fine, but when people turn their attention her way, she retreats into her shell.

But [spoilers] We do see that how much she stutters vs speaking with out a stutter is often dependent on how confident she is within specific group dynamics. Selfconscience is a factor in people who stutter.

I do not think it was to silence her, but to virtue-signal Tara is heard and her problems speaking up are considered for, knowing full well, whatever she says she can be ignored afterwards. They are clueless how to communicate with Tara and do not really care about her. But want to be perceived as the fair and understanding ones.

You are one of the first people to not assume Tara is evil just because she is a real witch.

A lot of people rank season 4 near the bottom half of Buffy but for me its one of the most coziest seasons

2, 4, and 5 are my favorite seasons.

This is a 'monster of the week' episode elevated, because it also skillfully moves the story arc on, but primarily because it is so damn good; chilling yet hilarious in several places.

joss whedon was told that buffy's biggest strength is its dialogue, so he decided to write an episode without any, and it's absolutely fantastic (and generally considered one of the three most iconic episodes of buffy ever). also, the girl's name is tara, her introduction is pretty important

One of the things i appreciate about your reactions is that you pick up on lots of the themes they lay down with the characters and the plot structure.

The main "gentlemen" was played buy legendary creature actor Doug Jones. Known for; Billy Butcherson from Hocus Pocus, Abe Sapien from Hellboy, the creepy hand eye guy from Pan's Labyrinth, The Silver Surfer from Fantastic Four 2, the Amphibian Man from The Shape of Water. ❤

I'm positive this was the most relaxed reaction video to this episode I have ever seen.

When we first met Olivia she was walking into Giles' living room wearing (apparently) nothing but a man's dress shirt so she was certainly more than just "a friend.".

I feel like I need you to watch that “projector” scene again because most of the fun/hilarious parts seemed to have either went over your head or maybe they just didn’t hit you 😅😅 Buffy offended at Giles drawing of her and being wide will always make me laugh. And yes, that was indeed a dirty joke lol

Yay Tara! The guys in the straitjacket are the creepy part for me. The way they flail around gets me.

One of the things that hallmarks a Whedon project (which he carried over to all his shows, Buffy, Angel, Agents of Shield...) he doesn't let anything drag out. Once an issue is introduced, it gets resolved quickly

You mentioned being mesmerized by the lead Gentleman's hands. He is played by Doug Jones, an actor who is famous for his "hand acting." He plays a lot of monsters in movies, like Abe Sapien in Hellboy 1 & 2, Angel of Death in Hellboy 2, the creature in the Shape of Water, Pan and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth.

On top of everything else this brilliant episode has interesting points about how talking can actually get in the way of real communication.

My first kiss was somewhat like that. On stage, in front of an audience. Our 2nd grade production of Snow White. I was Prince Charming, and a cute little girl named Storie was Snow White. The teacher wouldn't let me kiss her on the lips though. That would have been too SCANDALOUS. 😂

Hush is my favorite; one of the greatest episodes of horror storytelling in TV history.

Mid season finale vibes.... It was the mid season finale. Hush was the last episode of 1999. The next episode didn't air until 2000.

I had gotten to a point with reaction viewers where I was expecting Cass to assume souls were being taken. It was a little refreshing to have her just not know.

The inspiration for this episode (after the comment about Joss needing quippy dialogue) was an old German fairie tale. All fairie tales were originally grim warnings to children that were "sanitized" for the consumption of children in the 20th Century.

My favourite Buffy episode! Joss did an amazing job here. And! Xander beat up Spike! Yay!

Another fun reaction to watch. It is audacious to have a network show where most of the time has no dialogue and has multiple characters. There have been no dialogue shows in the past but it was the main character alone, stuck in a desolate place 4, but we had his thoughts. What is subversive and brilliant is how much of the season story is moved forward without dialogue. This is a big breakthrough episode for each character and will find out that this silent story tells the start and potential issues in store for everyone. This is one to watch again after the season ends to see the many levels the story touches and creates. And it is a very entertaining episode. Enjoy the rest of the season, take off is soon to happen, and it is quite a ride.

Although not in this edit, my favourite funny moment is when Buffy mimes indignation at the size of her hips in the childlike sketch of her. Also the dirty joke when Buffy was miming a staking but everyone else were unaware of her intent.

The first time we met Olivia was in 4x01 The Freshman. Buffy goes to see Giles and runs into Olivia, wearing only one of Giles' shirts, in the kitchen. Presumably there's some history between Giles and Olivia that we're not privy to.

I believe she was supposed to be a more recurring character, akin to Jenny, but because she wasn't contracted as a regular she quite rightly booked other work so she could earn a living and therefore wasn't as available.

But it's quite nice how that works out to add a little romantic friction for Giles. Buffy is not the only one whose private life suffers because of the calling.

It's nice for Willow to have a friend she can relate to.

This was the origin of the lovely term "Wanna Blessed Be."

Best Buffy episode?... No, but surely is top 10 (maybe even top 5)

There are a couple of BTVS episodes that really broke the mold and did something special with the TV format. Three episodes in particular lead many lists and HUSH would be the first of those three episodes.

One of the best episodes, no doubt here. The Gentlemen are awesome and creepy. Also, I'm not a big Buffy\Riley fan, but their theme song is so beautiful, it's like... sad but hopeful? I don't know, it's just emotional.

The Gentlemen are the most iconic villains of the whole show, IMO, and I love how they symbolize some of the worst villains of real life; well-dressed and smiling as they float by untouchably with their minions doing their grunt work. The Gentlemen thrive when the whole society is silent, and the only way to defeat them is by finding your voice!

My fave seasons are: 5, 6, 4, 7, 3, 2, 1 But no fan has the same order. Some fans don’t like season 4 or season 6 or season 7, but there is amazingness in every season.

Wow, I’d consider your order unusual but maybe it’s not? Maybe I’m the weird one? I don’t like 4 or 6 (6 was okay, if a little goofy, until one particular episode made me feel both sick to my stomach and heartbroken in one fell swoop and I was put off the whole season forever). My order would be 5, 3, 2, 7, 1, 6, 4

This episode was a lot harder to make than anyone realized! Not being able to talk on and off set to keep themselves hushed for this episode would be crazy difficult!

You should watch Grimm!! It’s a six season show based on the Grimm’s fairytales!! It follows a detective that can see monsters that no one else can. It’s such a good show!!!

Fun fact: many of the actors who played The Gentleman ARE mimes! I had nightmares for days after this aired. I still occasionally have the odd nightmare if I watch this too close to bed. The irony that this is the episode Buffy got an Emmy nomination for writing, when the show got praised for its witty dialogue constantly. And Tara, my beloved. One of my favorite characters in Buffy.

7:00 Yes but Anya also expects every relationship to end in grand tragedy. that's why she is lookign for the thign that will desroy them because she has never seen a healthy relaitonship.

After seeing this episode dozens of times it never gets old. You are constantly surprised and appreciate all the set-up. Cass is a "demanding" viewer that literally articulates all the dialogue and plot that she "hopes" to see happen before it happens. She has incredibly high standards. So, she's often disappointed by typical shows. However....welcome to Sunnydale hellmouth, where standards were made to be broken. Enjoy, this great piece of cinema and an early Halloween.

I think The best episode of S4 by far. Brilliant innovative writing, The Gentlemen were among the scariest of BTVS monsters. The cast recalled it was actually exhausting to film with the effort that had to be put in talk but stay silent. The nightmare of being cut into and not being able to scream shown when the student is being held down while The Gentlemen extract his heart, really frightening. The comedy between Xander and Spike brings a little light relief, and also our introduction to Tara. A great stand alone episode. This is a brilliant episode but, I feel there are more in S5 and and in S6 that even eclipse this. This was a fantastic stand alone episode and fan favourite.

Welcome to one of the best episodes of the entire series. It is so so good. There’s the whole dialogue thing that several others have pointed out. The monsters are some of the creepiest of the whole show. What it says about non-verbal communication. And I hope the Wikipedia entry on this episode is spoiler-free but it’s a really good read. It goes deep, all the layers to this story. How The Gentlemen represent Victorian-era prim and proper but sickly high society citizens (metallic teeth included in that) and how those grunts that follow them represent the lower class. All of that is just so fascinating. This was the absolute best episode up until that point. But there are two better episodes to come in the next two seasons.

This is my VERY favorite episode of Buffy. There's 2 in S5 and one in S6 that all come extremely close but this one wins out for me. Probably because it's horror themed. Also the timing of the music and the music itself is brilliant. 13:24 yes! :) reminds of the part on the river in Jurassic Park III. 26:20 they'll probably do spells and stuff.
