Hurricane Preparations at the Hangar

With a hurricane headed our way, I'd thought I'd show a little of what we do and the protection our hangar offers our aircraft.
For those of you that are on Instagram, check out Jack's page, as he regularly posts stuff from the hangar. His page is at:

    Brings back memories at Seymour Johnson in 84. Our load crew worked weekend duty, 12+ hours a day. Worked till late Sunday evening loading and arming for Monday first goes. Came to work Monday morning, and it was chaos! Everybody was running all over! When I asked why, I was informed that Hurricane Diana was coming, and we had to evaluate all four squadrons of F-4Es and the tankers. It was quite the experience!

    When you get the F-4 flying see if they will come out to Thunder over Louisville in April! Would love to see it! Have some old Crew Chiefs that would love to take a look at it!

    Did you... Use a screwdriver on a Dzus fastener?! You hack, you!!! 🙂 All teasing aside, I know people use screwdrivers all the time on those. Also KZread just gave me an old video of our girl here from 6 years ago: kzread.info/dash/bejne/i6Ki1rOvadq0aaQ.html

    Curious. Why not manually close the canopies? I never worked the D model, but it was possible to close the canopies on the E model manually with a locking mechanism on the right side of the fuselage.

  • @DieselThunderAviation

    That is possible, though getting them up off of the safety strut can be a small challenge, and then being able to gently lower them. Putting some air into the system doesn't take too long and allows the lift and latching mechanisms to operate like normal.

    They are out for maintenance. Even if they hadn’t been removed, they would have had to come out to allow us access to the electrical gear that’s mounted behind the backseat and the canopy lift strut.

    Can you use nitrogen to for the canopy on the F4?

  • @DieselThunderAviation

    @DieselThunderAviation

    We can use nitrogen, but it’s not required on that system. The Phantom has it’s own air compressor onboard and it uses regular air, which is what we used there.
