Hunting the Fish in a Tough River + My Pond has GONE!

Ойын-сауық

Graeme and Mike head off fishing to the local river to see if they can find any of its occupants. They hit as many swims as they can in a 3-hour trip using small rubber lures twitched near the river bed. Then Graeme shows how increased water flow can clean a river and explains why he thinks lack of flow and volume of water has changed drastically since he was a youngster (and that's a long time ago!) Then we are off into the new "Random Productions" section where he shows some new D.I.Y. products...builds a decking section using reclaimed pallet wood...rips the liner out of one of his ponds..and visits Grant's Tackle Up where they run through the different ways a beginner can go to set up for some winter Pike fishing. It’s a good mix up of film clips and will provide a bit of distraction during the middle of the week...Enjoy!

Thank you for so clearly explaining to those who don’t know how lack of flow destroys chalk streams and destroys ancient habitat. Our population continues to grow, but as you say our water is a finite resource and abstraction to supply ever increasing water demand for drinking water and agriculture/ irrigation is at critical levels. And yet there was I this summer during a limited heat wave watching a major household good chain selling quantities of swimming pools for garden “fun”. So that’s huge quantities of treated drinking water wasted to fill large play pools which ultimately will be tipped on the garden. Many places in the world the only safe water they can drink is bottled, yet here we waste gallons of it, when are rivers and streams are no longer of sufficient capacity to supply it. You are right it is not sustainable and there is next to no public awareness of the problems these unnecessary play ponds contribute to. Well done Graham for highlighting this. Fergal Sharkey will be proud!

Hello Graham good to see your son fishing with you , I live in Essex and Ive got Gladiolus in my garden I’m guessing you know they grow from a bulb so after the flower has died don’t pull them up as the long green pointed foliage feeds the bulb for next years growth so I tie the pointed foliage in a knot and they will go brown normally in November and I give mine a little tug and the brown foliage will separate from the bulb i then cover the bulb with some fresh compost and leave them all winter and around July you will see little green points poking through the compost , I tie mine to bamboo sticks and leave the sticks in for next year so I don’t forget where they are , I’m no expert gardener it’s a hobby of mine no doubt I’ll be criticised but as you say that’s how I do it , take care

You should freeze any herbs or things like mint you pick and then just take them out of the freezer as you leave to go camping or whenever or for whatever reason you want to use them. They state basically exactly the same as the day you picked them rather than losing half their flavour by drying. I mean if you're living in the wild why not just pick it when you intend to use it unless there's a risk of frost I guess when picking and drying might be worth it.

Gladioli - cut the stems back to about 4" and either lift the bulbs out or move the pots indoors and then replant/move back outside in the spring. If you do lift the bulbs you can rub the new bulbs off the parent bulb for replanting next year. I've never bothered as I live in the tropical south west but I understand it gets a lot colder for you northerners (I'm in Cornwall so everything east of the Tamar is 'the north')

Those of a certain age will know the slotted float as a Fishing Gazette Pike Bung. They were a bit limited, putting the live bait (usually) a few feet from the top of the water. Not seen much now, but good for trotting a dead bait down a river and bringing it back on a slow retrieve, with the bait twisting in the current. It's good practice not to have a totally flat float when pike fishing, or a self cocking float for that matter, because an angler might be fishing well over depth and the pike wolfs the bait down without registering a bite. Good show, as usual.

Hi there East coast of USA...furthest up that I fished was Cape Cod..I remember having some Smallmouth Bass fishing there that was memorable. I think that was on those spinnerblade lures ?... I liked all the traditional wood build houses with their "Widow walks" as well. But i never got any Northern Pike. I think our waters get a lot more pressure which is maybe why everyone is into tackle/techniques/conditions etc over here.Plus we have limited good fishing conditions nowadays as opposed to 50/60 years ago.

The problems with the supply of water is down to councils and government. We need more houses and one party propses 300,000 extra houses per year and the other 1 million. But no one proposes where the water is going to come from to supply them nor how the resulting extra seage is going to be treated adequately. Councils don't like additional reservoirs being built as they serve no useful purpose, they think, and they only take away land that could be used to housing development. Even more pressure on water. The problems of this country could be summed up in one word - over-population! The time you were talking about, Graeme, the 60s, the population of this country was perhaps 58million. It is now over 70m and likely to reach 75million before 2030. Far too many.

What we actually need is it to be standard for building companies to include water collection, filtration etc in every build. It might still need to use the water supply from the main pipes, etc but it would definitely reduce the use. Even if they developed it so the water collected was only used for certain jobs and the mains supply for drinking, washing up, etc. Also it'd be great to see every house being built with solar power systems already installed and top of the bill insulation etc. Yes it'd increase house prices initially but over the years it'd save the buyers money and the planet a fair amount. It'd be at the least a good experiment for a company to build at least one estate that's as environmentally friendly, carbon neutral as possible etc and see what difference it made and if there was a market for such things. Especially if the government, who give grants even now for insulation, solar panels, etc allowed buyer access to similar grants.

The rivers of England are just going to dry up and you will be told to celebrate the preservation of the aquafers. Tbh a river is just wasted water not needed by humans and once they are gone well so much less to spend on!!! Apparently we need at least 20 million extra people over the next decade just to fill all the jobs business demand to be filled Vast majority will occupy s e England so yep south England may not become an official desert but it will look increasingly brown in time 😂😂

Unfortunately the segment about flow of river.. maybe you should have reworded it somewhat different as it to me it sounds like you're attacking all people who live on housing estates Graeme. Unfortunately people can't help where they live they don't have multiple acres of land in a big bungalow in the small village.. we're not all that lucky . But I kind of understand maybe what you were getting at the fact that they're building too many housing estate.. unfortunately my advice is get used to it... The days of beautiful rivers are gone there either polluted with shopping trolleys car tyres or just other crap.. people on housing estates I definitely not to blame everybody needs.. so maybe you should have explain yourself better as to me it did sound like you were attacking people on housing estate for taking away all your fishing water.. put for arguments sake we will say that you weren't attacking people and you were attacking government.. well you know what to do, write to your local MP's.. get a petition going.. it's why you should never get political in your videos .. we all have to live somewhere Mr Pullen

  • @TAFishing

A concentration of housing developments meaning there will be a greater requirement of water from an underground aquifer ? therefore less water in the river ? Is that a better way of describing the pressure on water extraction ? My idea is that do the powers that be even think about underground aquifers and whether there will be enough water to provide for everyone ? I feel the balance on the other side is that I have heard it said that any rainfall cannot soak into the ground due to so many older houses having their front gardens paved over ? I may be wrong but I think there is now a requirement that all driveways should in some way be made permeable so water can drain through rather than shoot off quickly thereby worsening flood situations. I think writing to the MP's has already been done by many before me....perhaps there will be some amazing improvements...I certainly have my doubts.

Excellent post i read with interest / am simply a viewer too. It could well be that the private owners of water companies are not cleaning enough water. ''Southern Water is the private utility company responsible for the public wastewater collection and treatment in Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, West Sussex, East Sussex and Kent'' They have a captive audience concerning every household in their catchment thus a vast income. Therefore increase in population directly correlates to an increase in income & theres no rational link to more people meaning worse waterways. Well unless southern water would care to volunteer that persons not registered to households are responsible for extra strain on the system ? You know what to do = put all that to the water company where such astute political sensibilities might produce positive change.
