The man below wondered about the emotional toll on a soldier/sniper. I've never told my dad's story to the world. My father, JW Wood joined the British Army at 20 in 1947. He had several classifications including, linguistics, expert driver, survival, mechanic & superior marksmanship. I learned from his closest friends in the same regiment, Danny McGinn & "the Sapper" that my Father was dispatched to S.America after World war 2 with a Lee Enfield 303 & a pack of playing-card-like photographs of German Nazi officers who slunk out of Europe rather than face war crimes. (My mother thought he was whoring around in Germany) According to Danny & Sapper, my Dad shot them all, the whole photo- pack of them. Ironically, my Dad taught me to shoot with a Lee Enfield. 303 sniper rifle when I was 10. He died from alcoholic poisoning when he was 53. People say, move on, get over it. My Mother died at 83 still believing that my Dad was a whoring bastard. I stayed with my Dad a few weeks before he died & he told me how much he loved my mother. It's a huge fucking shame that two people can view the same relationship so differently? This is what happens to snipers.

@@amaree9732 well iv had night force optics at 3500 a pop , but iv never heard of any civilian being able to get the DU rounds in any calibers let alone 50 bmg. The MK 211 rounds Maybe, at 80 to 100 dollars a pop. Yes iv operated many 50 caliber weapons platforms in my line of employment.

I remember siting on the side of a hill after setting up, my part of a demo ambush. It started raining and I sat there drenched looking down a long valley in the pitch dark. I remember thinking , I am at the bottom of the barrel. Wet cold and no were to go to get out of this. The bottom,,,, than all of a sudden down the valley all hell broke out and I realized where I was. It was crazy, a mad minute, flares of all colors that made no sense. Explosions and tracers going everywhere. I thought I would rather be here than their, all things considered. Than Jake whispered over in my direction, " Happy New Years" and I thought wow where was I Christmas? It all ran together. RECONDO

Ive fired 4.50BMGs. The M82A1 is by far the most comfortable to shoot, the other rifles were an AR-50, Alberta Custom X50, And the McMillan. The M82 (Or M107) has a floating barrel in which the recoil was reduced drastically.Since the other 3 do not have this feature your shoulder is getting the full kick. The M82 is like shooting your Grandpa's 12G compared to the older rifles that are more available.

I just want to clear something up, as it appears there may be a slight lack of knowledge here. First off, the Barrett M82A1 does NOT have "tremendous" recoil. It has a highly effective muzzle brake as well as a recoiling barrel that significantly reduces recoil to make it very manageable. Second, I don't even know what the hell you mean by the .308 be adjustable. Finally, if the shot comes within 5 feet of you, so what, you'll be fine. If it hits you though, that's another story.

He was a bad shoot, he didn't hit anyone...

@jaikster he is using earpro, just the small ear buds that go inside the ears. Wearing a helmet when shooting a scoped long gun can be annoying, as the helmet chin strap can fuck with cheek weld and the front of the helmet can sometimes interfere with getting a good eye relief, especially since he's shooting at an upward angle. Just easier without it, same reason they wear hats backward when looking through glass.

@rachelkay06 Are those the earplugs that muffle loud sounds but still allow you to hear someone talking?

The MOA on that must be insane. I shot a .50BMG at the range the other day, and surprisingly my Mav. 88 has more recoil with some slugs loaded in. Maybe it was because the .50 had a brake, but still it was surprisingly low for recoil compared to what I expected.

The 50 BMG has an average free recoil of 83.17 pounds. The brakes are designed to slow the recoil velocity way down. That's why it feels more like a shove and not a punch, like a 12 gauge.

I been there getting shots right across those Mountains is tuff once you think you are dialed in the wind does something else .it can be done but it has to be just right no cross winds but almost impossible with long range .....

Not for me. I tried firing it by standing and hell, my shoulder hurt for like a weak. The recoil is so painful, the recommended cheytac instead. And I'm a 18 years old and weigh in at 60 kilos and my height is 5.7

@Jake4595 This is the reality of war. War doesn't stop for holidays, if anything it gets worse. The most complex attack we experienced on this mission took place on Thanksgiving when the troops were trying to get food. Half of them didn't eat before having to take cover and defend themselves. The apple pie was out because our priority isn't putting away the food it's staying alive. Yes, I got the shot with the pie in it to show that the fight goes on no matter what. How you view is up to you.

The soldier wears earplugs AND it is outside, where it is not as loud as on the inside shooting range.

actually your wrong. the barret has a spring mechanism in he barrel which reduces the recoil considerably so it is pretty much the same as a 7.62, having a spotter depends on the distance your shooting, not the caliber.

+PunaJussi I'm sure you need to be completely aware of any enemy fire and other elements of combat. I have no military experience but as a hunter I never wore earplugs regardless of the game I was killing. You need to completely aware of any noise in the woods.

That's exactly right! i have a AI 50cal. i had the Barrett M107 but got rid of it after i shot the AI one time. but recoil is extremely low. my AI AW 300 Win mag kicks like a horse compared to the 50. but with the brake, it has low recoil also. but people think 50's kick but its just hearsay.
