COMBAT FOOTAGE Ambushed Soldiers get A-10 air support to destroy Taliban snipers

U.S. and Afghan Army soldiers are caught in a sniper ambush after conducting a search on villages to locate enemy weapons, and IED factories. The U.S. mission is to disrupt Taliban activities in the area and to mentor Afghan soldiers so that they'll be able to take over operations by 2014.

Dudes on the ground never get the credit they deserve. I flew OH-58 during OIF and nearly got popped by RPGs twice, but the rocks, grit, and hell-bent determination of these guys has to be congratulated. It was an absolute honor to clear rooftops and feed intel to the boots on the ground. They are the ones who determine who owns the map space. (Anyone who has a party comment about whether we should or shouldn't have can take it elsewhere. Joe's don't pick the war, their job is to win it.)

I knew a Marine who worked a small town on the route between Syria and Baghdad in 05. At any one time, he told me intel estimated there to be about 400 insurgents to the their 140 or so Marines in this town. One day, driving the striker down the route, the insurgents on the side of the road wouldn't stop shooting at the striker, so he called in a Warthog just to fly over the side of the road. In his words, "First, crackling of AKs. After the Warthog flew over, dead silence."

you are 100% correct about instances of u.s. troops leveling an entire building to dig out a sniper. My unit used this tactic a number of times when i was in iraq in '03 and we did it even more in fallujah in '04. successful strikes almost always led to huge, invaluable surges in morale, resolve and other critical mental intangibles. anyone w/similar resources/capabilities would do the exact same and they should. at the end of the day, fire superiority is *supposed* to be disproportionate.

The problem with that is that this isn't a contemporary war where the enemies are easily identifiable. The enemies often look like regular civilians with guns or bombs hidden under their clothes. You may ambush what look like enemies just to find out afterwards that they were all unarmed civilians.

Once the troops have established the enemy's position and asses how much they need help / or if they can handle it with standard fire @ the enemy and shoot to kill. but if there pinned down from multiple sides they would signal for a air strike / a-10 to destroy the Position of target.

I agree with stwade. Risking the lives of 15 soldiers no matter what country is a mistake. The mistake even increases when you are attempting to eliminate a single well trained sniper (I say well trained because of the fact that he or she is holding down 15 soldiers on a flat piece of land) on flat land that is approximately 1200-1400 meters away is down right suicidal.
