HUNTER 350 : Accident Aftermath & Insurance Buyback

My Hunter 350 was totaled in an accident on October 18, 2033 ( • RIP Hunter 350 // Fina... ). The repair estimate was over $6000, so the insurance company deemed it a total loss. I requested a buyback option to salvage a few items from it and potentially rebuild the bike if the frame isn't damaged.
If it's rebuildable, then I might convert it into a scrambler or a tracker. Otherwise, I'll part it out and keep a few bits for my next Hunter 350 project. Wish me luck! 😉👍 --QM

    I’m really out of words 😢 knowing now what happened on that day gives me chills… the ground is covered in snow here in 🇨🇦 so the Busa is covered in the garage. I’m 47 years young and never been in a wreck but watching that footage is proof that no matter how careful you are on the streets… you can’t react to a wreckless driver coming from behind… best of luck on future project and mostly I wish you full recovery ❤️‍🩹 ✌🏼😎👍🏼

    I'm slowly getting better. I can walk around and I'm mobile again after 3 weeks. Being able to shower myself and get upstairs/downstairs at my house is a definite improvement, so life is improving. It's a shame that the Hunter was retired so soon, but I'm glad to be on this side of the dirt. If I can't salvage the bike and turn it into something useful, then I'll part it out and start over with something else. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    Congrats on your new Hunter 350! I was planning to install a crash guard on my bike when they became available again. I'll certainly add one to my next Hunter. However, a crash guard wouldn't have made much difference in this case. The hard impact from the rear and the high-speed flop onto the pavement would have mangled the bike with or without the guard. Cheers, and enjoy your Hunter! 😉👍 --QM

    I’m not sure what the insurance payout and purchase back amounts were but if it was me, I would cut my losses and get another bike the same and use the salvageable parts for the new one. I know from experience wreck repairs can end up being sentimental money pits. I wrecked my old z750 then spent a small fortune fixing it because I liked that particular bike. It ended up looking as good as it previously did but had continuous gremlins with the electrical and mechanics that I could never quite resolve. Get well soon as I enjoy your adventures.

    Yep, I've been down that path a few times with previous motorcycles and cars. If this frame is compromised at all (aside from the removable rear subframe), then I'll abandon that project and sell parts to recover $$$ toward the next bike. I'm tentatively planning to get another identical Hunter 350, so many of the parts from the damaged bike will be reusable as spares for the new one. The complete engine and ECU assembly should be saleable... or it could be an interesting power plant for another project. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    Howdy, and thanks for the support! Unfortunately, I didn't ride with the Fuel-X long enough to form any opinions or gather metrics for testing. The final ride video ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/pK15rq-tdcjSaMo.html ) was the only day that I rode with the Fuel-X and the Coffman's Shorty exhaust, and that was only ~20 miles before I got squashed. The engine definitely had more power and breathed better with the Coffman's exhaust and the DNA Stage-2 air intake. As I merged onto the freeway and entered the HOV lanes on I-10, the Hunter wasn't struggling at 70 mph like it usually did... it felt like 75-80 would be "easy" compared to before those upgrades. The Fuel-X was part of that equation for the air/fuel ratio adjustment, but I wasn't able to do any further testing. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    I saw that wreck months late, so this is probably something that might bug people, sorry, don’t mean to. But first, I am assuming from the the existence of other recent videos that you are healed up now, pretty much. Hope so! And importantly, did that Jeep driver get found out and get sent to a reckoning in court? If that hit was on purpose, I hope he gets taken apart. If it was an accident then I hope he still will have to make things right. Drivers that are so aggressive are a terrible thing they need corrective feedback they can comprehend. The vehicle is a weapon at speed. They point it at people and there have to be consequences. I hope you’re fine in any case, I hope you see your justice and I hope the jeep guy sees his side of that justice happen. Wow, what a thing to do. Anyway, I really like the small bore life thing you do, it’s a great concept.

    Thanks for the feedback and the support! Yes, I'm back on two wheels again, but not back to my "normal" state yet. I have a lot of residual nerve and joint issues that are slowly healing... hopefully completely, or at least enough that I can enjoy riding again. The driver was arrested at the scene of the accident after the police and first responders reviewed my GoPro helmet footage of the incident. He was charged with AADW (aggravated assault with a deadly weapon), reckless driving, speeding, failure to control lane/speed, illegal lane change, and a few other things. The Houston District Attorney advised they may upgrade the AADW charge (or add a concurrent charge) to second-degree attempted murder. I haven't been contacted regarding a deposition or court date, so I assume the court date is still pending. There are lots of angry, aggressive, and borderline homicidal people on Houston streets. 😒 --QM

    Howdy, Paul! No, I don't have any real concerns or anxiety about getting back out on two wheels. However, I'll probably avoid commuting by motorcycle through the busiest parts of Houston for a while, if not indefinitely. The traffic conditions and drivers' aggression are really getting out of hand over the past couple of years, and it doesn't show any signs of slowing down or improving. I'll stick to the side roads and cruising on the back highways for my two-wheeled fun. If my stars align properly, then I'll probably move out of the Houston area sometime in the near future... somewhere farther west or out of southern Texas entirely. The overall mood and general quality of life has gone down the toilet since C-19. I think I'm ready to go back to rural living in a small town with fewer people, less aggression, and a lot more sanity. I just need to convince the rest of my family and work on the logistics to effect the change. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    Hi Aaron,, name is Charlie and I"m a truck driver. I live east of Tulsa and drive Tulsa to Houston frequently. I am an Ultra Glide 2010 owner and was watching a bunch of Classic 350 video's when I started watching HNTR 350 video's then saw your series on this bike. You had published several video's, some of which are gone now. I used to live in Spring Branch and was born in Belaire , Tx - Aaron. Very sorry this happened to you my young buddy, Very hard to take. I quit watching you for a couple of months and remember you were riding the Hunter as your pickup truck has some major trouble back then as well. Hope you still have SOMETHING to drive to do your work. Hope you weren't seriously injured and can make a total recovery. Anyway, i quit watching you back when you said you were making plans on riding to Missouri and I figured maybe you were going to take the Hunter up there. The Hunter 350 wasn't even a year old Aaron and it's gone. Still, since the engine is part of the frame on the Hunter, it did good I guess. The engine didn't come off the bike and it took a powerful impact. Will you plan on buying a 2024 Hunter or are you going to try something different. I have been eyeing the BSD GOLD STAR and also the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 which just came out. Take care man! You are so lucky. I hate the 4 wheeler drivers of Houston and Dallas, they are totally out of their heads man. Take Care Aaron and get well dude.

    Greetings from the USA! The cable for the seat latch was easy to reroute. I simply pulled the plastic grommet away from the inner tray plastic to free the end of the cable. Then I shoved the cable pull and plastic grommet between the inner fender and the frame rail to pinch it in place. The edge of the plastic fender holds it fast, but I also secured it with a heavy-duty plastic cable tie to prevent it from wandering/vibrating free. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    @@jasontomica8938 Howdy, Jason! Yes, I ride with foam earplugs about 98% of the time... always when I'm on the longer highway trips (sustained high speeds), and usually for my commutes and around-town jaunts. The only time I'll skip the earplugs is when I'm headed to the local grocery store or other close destination where the speeds will be below 45-50 mph. The windscreen spoiler was a new addition to my PCX150 for the Scooter Cannonball Run trip. The National Cycle windscreen that I have on there works well, but it points too much turbulent air right at my helmet's face shield. That laminar lip extension looked odd, but it drastically cut down the wind noise at my helmet so my audio/video recordings turn out better. I had a different spoiler on there several months ago, but its bracket was dead center in the middle of the camera and also interfered with my view of the road ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/e5ab2I-rd8bTeLw.html ). • @QuasiMotard

    @QuasiMotard

    8 ай бұрын

    That's a good question. The insurance repair costs are usually inflated to include full retail parts costs, dealer labor, handling/transport fees, and other factors. The actual repair cost might be as little as $500-1000 if I can source the parts cheaply and perform the labor myself. However, if the frame is compromised, then I will sell parts from this bike (e.g., engine, ECU, etc) to recover my "buyback" cost. I paid $1875 to get the bike back from the insurance company after they paid me the full value of the bike (plus taxes and the value for a few of the damaged upgrades). In the worst scenario, I should be able to sell the wheels and the complete engine (with ECU, throttle body, main wiring harness, etc) for at least $1800. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    7 ай бұрын

    Thanks for the support! This was an intentional road-rage incident. The cager got angry because he was forced to stop for slow/merging traffic into his lane (#4) while my lane (#5) continued moving. He nearly hit me while trying to quickly (illegally) change lanes directly next to me, so I tooted my horn to let him know I was there. This enraged him and he laid into his horn as I continued down the highway behind other traffic at a safe distance and speed. He chased me down nearly 1/4 mile down the highway and struck me from behind (rear-left) at 80+ MPH while I was traveling ~55 MPH. I was tumbling on the pavement before I realized that I had been hit. He was arrested by Houston Police at the scene for aggrivated assault with a deatly weapon and several other traffic charges (speeding, reckless driving, improper lane usage, etc). The Houston district attorney advised me that they were considering upgrading the assault charge to second-degree attempted murder. I haven't received any additional information about the criminal proceedings since the event. 🤷‍♂️ --QM

  • @QuasiMotard

    @QuasiMotard

    16 күн бұрын

    Well... that just depends on rider skill, riding habits (e.g., commuting vs pleasure riding), and where you live (traffic concerns). I've been riding on the streets for almost 40 years and well over 2M miles. This was the first time that I've been down on the pavement or had significant injuries. I've had plenty of close calls and a few low-speed drops because of inattentive cagers in the past, but never anything serious until now. If you've never ridden on the streets before, then I strongly suggest taking not only the MSF Basic Riders Course (usually required for licensing), but also some advanced MSF courses that teach evasive maneuvers and panic stops. Those advanced techniques will save your skin in city traffic. Safety gear is also extremely important. I wouldn't have walked away from my wreck if I hadn't been wearing all of my safety gear. The bare minimum for every ride is: helmet, jacket, gloves, and motorcycle-specific boots/shoes (include ankle protection). Armored riding pants are a smart idea, but the added heat can be problematic for southern climates. Good luck with your into to motorcycling, and I hope you find a good fit! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    I won't know until I tear into it and perform a full diagnosis of the frame and other pieces. The forks will need to be disassembled and rolled to see if they're still flat (not warped). If those are OK, then the big items will be the frame integrity on the left side and the rear subframe condition. If there are any stress-fractures or breaks, then it would be too much trouble to weld and recertify the frame. If the frame checks out, then I'll probably finish the parts list to see what the restoration/conversion project costs might be. The short list items are: - rear subframe (luckily, it appears to be removable/replaceable) - rear grab handles - rear outer fender - rear tail light and turn signals - seat - fuel tank (maybe salvage/reuse the fuel pump & sender) - passenger footpeg (not sure if the frame mount can be bent/salvaged) - left footpeg trellis, footpeg, mounting bolts, etc (unknown frame mount damage) - shift lever and linkage - center stand - side stand - handlebars, grips, etc - clutch perch (?) - clutch lever - headlight bucket and front bezel - fork stays for headlight bucket - speedometer/gauge cluster - front forks (?) - front wheel bearings (likely stressed or damaged on twist/impact) - ... (still compiling a mental list) We'll see how things turn out in a few months when I have time, money, and good enough health to work on the project. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

My cursory overview shows that I should be able to salvage about $650 worth of accessories and upgrades from the bike (parts that weren't damaged) that I can reuse on the next project. That leaves a $1200 damaged hulk behind for further salvage or rebuild.
