Hundreds of NYC Bike Riders Demand Mayor Eric Adams Make Streets Safer!

Transportation Alternatives organized a critical mass of human beings to demand Mayor Eric Adams commit to making streets less deadly for bike riders and to fully implement current and new projects without compromising safety.
Somewhere between 400 and 500 riders turned out to ride from Union Square to City Hall. I was able to put this up a few hours after the event after riding over 10 miles to get home.

Looks like what we did in the 1970ties. It started the transformation to what we have now in the Netherlands. Go for it NYC !!

The data is in: protected bike lanes make streets safer for EVERYONE, pedestrians, cyclists, AND motorists. The reason mayors are hesitant is because some free on street parking will be lost.

The data is in bikers following laws. This is such a street grab for profit. 3rd avenue is a mess and an underused 8 foot bike lane. Except of course rbikes going the wring way.

This 'world-class city' is so woefully behind. The future of densely-populated, transit-rich cities such as NYC, IS not, nor CANNOT be a private-use, 2-3 ton, often OVERSIZED (and far more deadly) vehicle for every adult over the age of 18. I have many friends who live outside of the U.S., and after they come to visit me in NYC, almost all of them make the same remarks about 'all the cars' here and the SIZE of our vehicles. It is beyond perverted. Time to END the catering to the owners of private-use vehicles. A very large portion of people in NYC drive cars for NO reason other than habit, laziness and gross entitlement. We need better, safe infrastructure. Protected bike lanes. 'Daylighting' at every corner. More 'pedestrian scramble' crossings. And we need ENFORCEMENT (which is currently lacking) regarding cars idling/parking in Bus Lanes. In Bike Lanes. Over entire crosswalks. On sidewalks (that's right...I said ON sidewalks...sadly, a not uncommon thing in the outer boroughs...). Cars idling'parked in Bus Stops. We need to address the drivers with No license plates. With purposefully bent plates. With thick 'decorative frames' intended to obscure the first/last characters of their license plates from being read by cameras. Car with fake 'vanity' plates like 'Go Yankees' or 'Mitsubishi Larchmont'. Cars with plates where the paint has been intentionally scraped off. License plates covered in blurry, clear plastic covers. Fake temporary plates. Cars with 100% ILLEGAL tinted windows. All of this suggests drivers who are grossly entitled, reckless, and scofflaw and endanger every single one of us, whether we are a pedestrian, cyclist or even a driver. It stands to reason that drivers who are unaccountable (by way of illegal plates and/or tinted windows) idle, park and drive however they please. And I don't want to hear about 'resource' challenges for the NYPD and/or DOT, as this is nothing but excuses to deflect blame. Heck, many of us have pointed such scofflaw driver behaviors to NYPD and DOT who were standing right there at the time, and they do nothing but offer up 'excuses' for the drivers' behaviors. We need to change the entire 'culture' around car ownership and use. It's a uniquely American problem, and is all the more perverted in a densely-populated city such as this.

100 000 Rideshare app cars is what your talking about? Do you know that? More TLC cars than privately-owned. What city are you living in? Are you actually here? Ridiculous. There are more unlicensed unplated motorcycle mopeds than cars. Look around. There are not 8+ million cars, there is not a car for every person over the age of 18. What!? Your statement is hyperbolic and wrong.
