In the footage, one can see that when visionaries began scoping out these changes 10-20 years ago, cars were still rationally sized. Now, drivers insist on bringing 6,000-lb mobile living rooms or toy pickups everywhere they go, and demand that everyone else accommodate them.

The solution is to allow family cars unimpeded but not light-trucks. I do not like that pickup trucks are getting the size of commercial trucks.

​@@mapgar1479 forget about light trucks, they are the size as a battle tank of WW2. Americans seem not the brightest humanity has to offer.

Really cool and great to see. Will be awesome when all the temporary infrastructure is made permanent with nicer pavers, and smaller streets space. I can't wait to visit New York again to see all the improvements!

Speeding up traffic, by giving people more space to walk, cycle and spend time in the streets, sounds like a great deal! Good to see the difference that's been made, looking forward to the changes to come.

I work only a few blocks from Union Square. There are still a good amount of cars on the surrounding blocks; it will be amazing to see the transformation once the new park renovation is complete!

Great, but still lots more to be done. Also, they need more greenery and better bike lanes. Too much bare concrete still. However, still a big improvement on what it was.

Was on a tour and was blown away. So important to document and love the history and progression. Everyone should take the tour. Great ideas here for any street activation project.

This will help other cities visualize what can happen when we do these projects right. I was in Times Square before this change. I hated it. This makes it much better.

The entire diagonal portion of Broadway ought to be closed. It’s disruptive to the grid and slows buses in the snarled traffic. A huge amount of public space could be created!

Car space is public space. I say there needs to be a balance of car and non-car uses. certain blocks should be car free while others car inclusive but to encourage local traffic.

This is great progress! I remember visiting New York City in the 1990s a couple of times and I remember Times Square to be utterly chaotic with left turners going at a breakneck speed for the area to get through the lights. Just organizing the square made even auto traffic better! It seems counterintuitive moves actually improves the traffic and city experience for everyone. Cities in Europe have been and are making similar improvements to the pleasantness and urbanity of their towns.

In 2020, there were supposed to be flying cars, robots as home nannies, and we have limited road traffic and bicycle paths. Something as simple as this took almost 50 years. I wonder if any science fiction writer predicted this 50 years ago ;-)

I remember in the early 2000s in Times Square and having my spouse, me and my young children crowded off the sidewalk and into a motorist lane. It was terrifying and it really happened multiple times. I only returned with my children when the pedestrianization projects were implemented. And to Mark Levine's point, all of the Times Square vicinity including the numbered streets should be closed off to motorists. Use automatic retractable bollards like are used in Europe so certain vehicles needed to serve businesses can go into the ped zone. Can't this be a 'dividend' of congestion pricing?

Walking, running, bicycles, escooters, green open spaces, electric buses, electric commuter trains and trams are all parts of a good transportation system. Speak up for improved transportation options in your city. Every train station needs safe, protected places to park and lock bicycles. Children and older adults should be able to ride bicycles to work, school or for fun safely.

Great improvements, though the treatment still makes people look like guests of cars. I guess it will improve with time.

I like some of these changes but certain areas should be reopened to cars. Instead of camera enforcement of bus lanes just hire more cops. Yet in Saint Pete Florida we just installed the Sunrunner B.R.T. on 1st Avenue Nort and South which was a pair of 3-4 lane one way streets so we repurposed one lane on each 1st avenue as a bus lane and added protected bicycle lanes but a lot of drivers are driving on it anyway. I do not however since I do like 1st Avenue better with reduced lanes however it is not really enforced here. However: The latest study by New York City D.O.T. shows that 63% of New Yorkers use a car which is a majority as their primary means of transportation while 43 percent use the bus or subway with less than 5% biking and about 25% walking as primary means of transportation.

That joke of yours is getting too old since no portion of Broadway needs to be reopened to cars (traffic on that street is pretty low). In fact, all of Broadway between 59th and 14th Streets needs to be permanently closed to car traffic.

@@TheRailLeaguer And he hasn't provided a link to the study. And there is a reason - there is no way 63% of NYers use car as a primary means of transportation. If that were true the entire city would be in gridlock every moment of the day.

There's no way that 63% of new yorkers primarily travel by car. There isn't enough pavement in the city for all those cars to exist at the same time.
