Hummingbird Forced to Lay Four Eggs in Ten Days

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Due to an attack by a California Scrub Jay, our mother hummingbird Emerald lost an egg. She was already developing another egg, so she laid it a day later. What would she do next?
Emerald has rebuilt the nest where Opal and Jade successfully fledged on February 21 and 22. She laid the first egg of her second clutch on March 11 and the second on 13. We wish her the best for her new clutch.
Watch this Allen's Hummingbird Nest where you can see exclusive live footage of our mother bird "Emerald" keeping her eggs warm until the babies hatch, grow and learn to fly. The nest is located in Thousand Oaks, California, where this little hummingbird built her nest on a string of Christmas lights.

Maybe the one abandoned egg was a decoy for the egg thief. Bless her heart.

I feed all my local wildlife, including hummers and California scrub jays. I remember once seeing a scrub jay with possibly a hummer in its beak, hopefully a hummer that was already deceased, but that's nature for us-- beautiful yet realistically brutal

Emerald's a smart little lady! Nature has many emotions, opportunities and....OPPORTUNISTS. That was sad, but I'm relieved it happened early. She mended her situation immediately. I'm proud of her determination. 👏 Keep on keepin on Emerald! Thank you for this and everything that you do Carole❤

I always love Emerald and even if it was cute to see the nest perched on a bunch of Christmas light, her precious babies were exposed to predators even though this wasn’t Emerald’s fault though there should be a tree that provides better protection, shelter and shade for the babies. If there were trees available near the house that offered better protection for Emerald’s babies, Crimson might still be alive . Trees like the Ficus tree or any type of tree of your choice shall do as long as the perch is comfortable for Emerald to perch on so she can get the view from inside out. The leaves , big as they are, provides shelter from anything including natural shades for the expectant mom and her future babies to start her own family. I can’t wait to see more of Emerald the hummingbird because I miss viewing her videos of her happy broods of delightful babies.

Nature is both cruel and wonderful, often at the same time. Fingers crossed for little Emerald getting her babies hatched and fledged. It's so hard not to anthropomorphize when seeing something like this. Would sure love to know what kind of reaction they "feel" if anything when they suffer repeated losses like this.

Could the abandoned egg be placed in the new nest, or would three potential chicks be too crowded and Emerald not capable of taking care of so many chicks?

why not take the second egg she layed and put it in the nest wirh the other to, seems a bit harsh to just sit and watch and do nothing... its different if no o e was watching and she abandoned it but you clearly watch her so why not help lay an extra baby .....

  • @HummingbirdSpot

You can't do that. The eggs have to be laid days apart so they hatch at approximately the same time. She would have abandoned that egg no matter what you did and laid two more.
