    This works. This is all I do when in street fights, and it never fails me. Well, besides ounce, when dude was way too big and strong; I just stayed covered, weaved under, turned the opi. direction, and kicked backward toward his knee. It landed right on the top of his knee,he droped, and I began to kick and work that knee.

    I'm glad they have a place that teaches Pencak Silat. The place is called Sityodtong Muay Thai in Somerville, MA. They also teach Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Brazilian Jujitsu, Jeetkunedo, and Boxing. Kenny Florian sometimes goes there and Sean Gannon trains there.

    The most effective form of this combination of moves involves only the wrist lock (though backwards, straightening the arm rather than bending it) and a strike to the elbow. Imploding somebody's elbow not only renders that arm useless, but is ... magnificently painful! :D They will be disoriented and defenseless in under one second, if you can time the twist'n'strike correctly. Tastes great on cereal too!

    @DrStoooopid Granted, but many of those techniques (or similar ones from other forms) were adapted by actual self-defense martial arts. The fact remains that there are martial arts more suited to simply disabling an assailant or warding off a bully or whatever. I am mostly referring to the people saying things like "Dude next time I am bullied at school I'll try this technique!" If they manage to pull it off at all, their lack of training will likely lead to mutual (probably severe) injury.

    @budoarts101 thank you for the sharp observation. Yes, silat is all about close quarter combat and short range weapons and quick kill moves. I've 'earned' the experience of being a subject of the sinking python and another move called 'seligi' that ends with a double fists to my solar plexus (i was 14) and I passed out for 3-5 minutes. Not keen to try it again.

    yeah, the Jujitsu variant I have seen (the knee strike becomes an ankle-level sweep that creates a 'see-saw' effect to ensure they go down) that the black belts practice ends up with you kneeling on the attacker with your knee in their ribs - still in a more upright position, ready to face the next problem... it's still a VERY effective method for a single attacker though. Just feel that getting down to that level isn't a good idea with more than one (potential?) attacker

    @joiless true, but many of Silat's techniques can be applied in a "necessary force" manner. For example, I can choose to respond with varyious levels of resistance from simple disarms to reversals from the same technique. It's more about the practitioner than the art itself.

    @mauiboynokaoi i think the point of there little exchange is silat is not about a fist fight. its about a puncher vs a complete fighter. boxing does have amazing punching and body movement, but silat is about a lot more then just hands and body movement.

  • @devilsdevil19

    @mauiboynokaoi I don't know if you have ever study Silat. But it has to do with timing you don't catch his arm when its fully extended, you catch it when he is about mid point. Then you go with the flow of his punch making it easier to grab his wrist. You also have to start moving over when he is about to throw the punch causing him to miss, again timing. Just like when a boxer is ducking and weaving.

  • @thefez-cat
    @thefez-cat13 жыл бұрын

    Silat is NOT a self-defense martial art. It is a battlefield martial art - it is meant for warfare and many of its techniques are intended to permanently maim or kill an opponent. The force used in techniques like the sinking python can break bones, shred muscle and completely incapacitate someone. Don't expect The Man to be super happy about your use of this kind of fighting to "deter bullies."

    @DrStoooopid It's a damn good maxim for any and all martial artists. People get too focused on "I could totally kick someone's ass with that!" and don't consider where these arts come from. The term "human weapon" is very apt because such training carries just as much responsibility as owning a firearm does, and for the same reasons.

    Just a to add to your comment; When the enemy gets the knee there is a 100% probability his body will jerk forward causing him to bend at the waist - that's a shock to his system - esp. if the knee hits the solar plexus. Then the control technique with the "sinking python" bring him to the ground. (At this point you could even mount him -Brazilian Style)

    @wayoftheforesthand But there's a difference between ring fighting and street fighting. With ring fighting, for safety reasons, many strikes with certain parts of the body to certain parts of the body are illegal. For example, headbutts are illegal. Strikes to dangerous areas (throat, spinal cord, kidneys, etc.) are illegal. This gives grappling a HUGE advantage over striking as very few grappling techniques are restricted.

    This move is effective but very very hard to execute. You need to look for the perfect opportunity, if you try it at the wrong time you end up just grabbing your opponents wrist. Your opponent is then free to turn and land a hook to the side of your face, which would very possibly cause knock out.

    @wayoftheforesthand The thing about being a "complete fighter" as you say is that no matter what you do, you'll always be outclassed by a specialist. A boxer will always outbox you, a tae kwon do practitioner will always outkick you, a muay thai fighter will fight better in a clinch, a jujitsu practitioner will defeat you on the ground, and an aikido/wing chun practitioner will always fight better defensively than you.
