The triangle choke is definitely effective in street fighting. The video leaves out the fact that you pull the "trapped arm" under the opponent's neck/mouth. That prevents them from biting and adds necessary pressure. Also, it takes about 6-7 seconds to make someone unconscious. As a practical matter, non-practitioners don't realize what has hit them in that short a period of time to bite or escape (not to mention the fact that the instinctive thing is to try and get out rather than bite).

This isn't completely accurate... in jiu-jitsu you are taught to take the guys arm that is inside the triangle lock and move it across his neck and than tighten your triangle so that both arteries are compressed and it will be much tighter

Correct, you can even shove the other hand away with your elbow, then embrace your thighs, lift your head towards your opponnent, so potential hits from the outside arm can't reach you and compress his head with all your force (like a snake), he will tap in a few seconds.

this was accurate. this was showing the traingle where you use your own hand and press that other side instead of pulling their arm across

That triangle demo needed more angle for a tighter squeeze.
Applied incorrectly

indeed, they dont show the hip pivot to get the angle nor do they show the passing the arm over...

I like how they show a bag triangle choke lmao, the arm that is inside the triangle should go acros your body so its really tight, not even gonna talk about the angle..
My favourite technique when working on my back. Great because you can use this choke just with your legs whilst defending with arms.
only bjj fighters know why this technique is wrongly applied

i am a judoka and i noticed that it was wrong
The triangle choke uses one of your thighs and your opponents shoulder as a powerful vice against the carotid arteries. By pulling the opponents head down you ADD that much more pressure to the already acute angle the neck is resting on. By pushing the opponents trapped arm across your torso you make it MUCH tighter. To relieve the pressure on your neck (blood choke, not air choke). The opponent can turn away into the bent knee of the agressor, but he'l provide his head as a punching bag.
this is cool because i learned this in the gym and now i found it on youtube
this is like a big friendly hug
i do jujitsu and we were doing ground work a few weeks ago and i locked this in and made someone much bigger and more experienced than me tap like a baby i love it so much :D
The triangle choke exerts pressure on to the neck causing your blood flow to slow dpwn as well.
When you do Jiu Jitsu there are certain angles you can put the triangle where they can't pick you up. Also a leg wizer will knock them off balance when they stand up while they're in a triangle.
its like my finishing move in mma fights
I watched this a year ago and didn't get how the second leg adds additional pressure but NOW I get it. The second leg sort of does what your hand does when you're cracking a nut with a nutcracker. The neck being the nut and the first leg being the metal bit of the nutcracker.
This is one sweet choke.
You sir are indeed correct I noticed this as well.
Yes, many chokes and techniques were created by japanese judo but the triangle choke was invented in BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU (BJJ)
I love this move, as a warm up in bjj we do triangles.
lol you guys this move is no joke I train mma and this right here is a killa move!
We have such a tecnic too in judo. It's called SanKaku Jime :D
Ryan Hall (ADCC) has finished this move without having the arm across you can finish a triangle from this position if you've got the correct angle, the arm DOES NOT necessarily need to be across but it is better for it to be across. your leg does most of the choking an the opponents shoulder does part of the choking...in the video the opponent DID NOT tuck his arm under his leg(he has it forward allowing for the triangle finish) in which case he would need to transition to BOLT LOCK position
the way you sit forward when your getting chocked doesnt really allow you to strike hard enough to make him let go, it only take 5-10 secs to make someone go to sleep if the dont tap
my favorite submission :)
If you make their arm that is inside the triangle go across your body, you don't need to worry about getting bitten. LOL
While I don't execute it like in the video, this and the armbar are my favourite submissions
this hurts like shit even a 4 yr old could cause brain damage with this move!!!! You rock Human Weapon!!!!! keep up the good work
the rib cage is open, the armpits too and with the right amount of concentrated power it is possible to cause serious damage when hit in the right places. There are many pressure points in the body that is open when this lock is applied, also small direct rapid punches tp the rib cage will eventually make the grappler release his opponent!
omg i really need to find somewhere to learn jiu jitsu...might move to a big city in which i could find a jiu jitsu trainer along with my regular WC ;] epic combination
That hold is no joke, its like your shoulder is being used to choke you, really that's exactly what it is.
thanks
none would tap or go to sleep from the demonstrated "triangle choke"
@honkyxadonis One of the hosts of the show was a 10th Planet jiu-jitsu brown belt. It doesn't really matter if the animation isn't perfect, though, because it was just for demonstrative purposes. The animated figures they used probably didn't have the points of articulation necessary for a proper triangle, anway.
@1hwwtv , the arm on the neck helps a lot, where did YOU learn your fkng Jiu Jitsu?
A triangle chokes purpose is to cut off the corroded artery. The arm across is not necessary but optimal as the artery is still cut off on the other side while other major blood vessels are cut off effectively strangling the opponent
Agree, in brazilian jiu-jitsu, we were taught that the right arm goes across opponents throat.
You know, I've been watching a lot of martial arts related clips recently and I keep seeing people saying things like "that's all wrong" or "I could totally defeat that". Rather then talking about it they should remember, we have one empirical way of proving statements about which martial art is more effective.
thanks.
unconnected123: this was exactly my first thought when I watched the video... lol
I agree with you.. Depending how tight it is it would work.. But if the arm is across the body it would be much faster to choke out... It is lethal... Depending on how long you hold for...
NICE
I studied Gracie Jiu-Jitsu a few years back. I was never very good at triangle chokes. It's harder than it looks.
Catch the triangle setup, make a backstroke swimming motion to bring the opponent more towards you, cross the arm over, angle the hips, squeeze the knees together, lift the hips to the ceiling and last, pull down on the back of the head.
Yeah, its knid of like a sleeper hold except with the legs, and a sleeper hold really only needs a few seconds before you're out
If your opponent doesn't tap out...... he'll pass out... LOL
its almost as if the creators of this show learnt their triangle choke from watching youtube videos.
This triangle choke does pose that danger, as well as being picked up and slammed, search up "proper triangle" a few of us tested it, you can't bite, eye gouge, or attack the groin. very rare you'd end up in a position to do the triangle on the street but it is possible
just from looking at the way the video demonstrates it, it does have major flaws, but is still executable. from the front you can still get the choke off, and the main reason this would work is because of how far he is leaning is head up. notice his left hand is on his own knee, pulling in his head, and putting his chin near his forehead. he shouldn't of made the pulling motion at the end though. tips: tilt off, you shouldn't see his shoulder, if flexible, wrap your elbow around your kneecap.
@puzzypirate any idea about hou much time holding is neccesary to cause permanent problems?
can't believe they show this stuff the wrong way on tv. gotta pass the arm over to finish
Hey, if the man who is being locked from this stance he bite to get out ??? His mouth is very near the chest of his opponents.
I saw some guy on TV wrap the other dude up with this move then unleashed elbow slashes to the top of the head. He didnt pass out or tap out to the regular triangle choke itself. Is it really as effective as this clip portrays?
I think "hateprotoss" is referring to this particular demonstration. I don't know about "many mistakes", but I do see one, which is not pulling the arm across the chest to actualize the choking pressure. The triangle choke is successful in fights, but only when done properly. And I agree with "Charlesm2626". By turning sideways you can lock the choke tighter and hook the leg if your opponent attempts to stack.
i second that motion
the grappler's rib cage is open, the opponent just had to punch them constantly and he's free again!!
"Transforming you into a human vicegrip." xD
someone: i have seen this grip several times, and everytime the one being choked, stands up, and smash the chokers head into the ground. It's there a way to prevent this?
@DarxLotus you got served son
@Darinor pressure on one side is enough to get some to pass out, blood supply is being cut off, also choke out happens when breathing normally has become difficult, again the slightest pressure can obstruct or cut off air supply
how long will it take for the blood to reflow? after they have passed out?
i wouldve said the same thing but you already did!!!
A triangle choke with enough pressure can knock someone out in less than 4 second. Most people wouldn't know what was happening until it was too late.
Hey, can anyone tell me ways of how to get more flexible for this choke? ive been trying for awhile but it always seems like i cant get my right leg flexible enough to get under my left. any tips?
Lol mine is the flying arm bar or arm bar from mount or guard position so basiclly arm bar from any position. but i was wondering how often do you come across the position ot triangle choke i was taught it but have only used it once and it was half was accidental too until i noticed the position o my legs and his head. but if you ca help me oiut tell me how to do the triangle from say the mount position please :P i wanna try that move alittle more
@Darinor nice observation! i assume you take jujitsu???
I think I really good demonstration on how to do this is when Mel gibson does it at the end of Lethal Weapon 1.
@SolidOptic In an actualy triangle choke, the victim's arm is going to be across his face. So if you ever find yourself in a triangle, I don't think your opponent will mind much.
@haftir absolutely... The guy is perfectly positioned to escape, and he's not applying any choke.
actually no you don't if you get a good grip on the shoulder. moving the hand across is meant to move the shoulder, but it's a band-aid for doing the move wrong because someone who's good with triangles has the shoulder pinned right when they get the figure 4.
Apparently, this is the history of ass whooping.
this i not a critic but a genuine question for anyone who does this kind of fighting. i don't have anyone to try this on so please tell me , what hapens if the person on top rolls onto his right side using either his left leg or knee for the momentum? looks like it would cause enought pain in the botom persons leg to make them let go. also what is to stop a good ball grab and squeeze in so far as street fighting goes?
i got put in one of these today and it felt like my head was going to explode from all the blood rushing to my head
@iso53145314: it's a vascular choke, it stops blood from reaching the brain, not air.
The best way I managed to escape one of these was by putting my right hand on my ear. Got pretty lucky, as he hadn't trapped both. If you can get a hand free, I'd recommend that.
Pankration apparently has complaints saying that it's not entirely "pure" because most of the ancient techniques were lost.
Yeah you're right I'm pretty surprised this wasn't mentioned in the video.
well it's basically the same but they call it mma triangle choke because it was a move that they learned in the episode dedicated to mma
ill use traditional karate blocks on the big show hahahaha
@B3nBo1194 A few corrections: it would be under the THROAT. THEIR instead of THERE. That said, I agree there are variations, but the basic principle of jiu jitsu is to be able to defeat a stronger and bigger opponent using minimum strength. That variation would require a huge, ineffective amount of strength. Anyway, so long as the guy is controlled, we shouldn't care! =) Greetings and thanks for replying.
what´s the diffrence between tapping out and passing out? doesn´t sound so diffrent to me
@Darinor shift your hips then your body outwards perpendicularly towards your vise crushing leg, in this case, the gray man's right leg, this angle lets the leg squeeze harder and lets you grab a hold of the opponent's leg as well so he cant rotate his body to escape
yeah and also the fact that triangle choke is a blood choke meaning they will pass out in under 10 seconds if its done corectly, as opposed to an air choke
I like that move
@B3nBo1194 thnx for the advice, the part about twisting your body sideways is great. This way you can put a lot more pressure using just your legs. I can't apply the GI choke because we don't wear GI's :P
It takes A LOT longer if the arm isn't pulled across, as the artery on that side isn't being constricted. And like MetalCosta said, you need an arm across the chest unless you are choking out a grandmother
@dannyexistance23 its all about head control. if you keep his head down, it limits his escape options. with his head forced down, he cant use his legs to attempt to stand up without putting incredible pressure on his neck. also, when you push his head down, you're supposed to tighten your legs even more, so it sort of helps make the hold tighter
@RRTurbulence But if your opponent is able to defend at all, this may cause the position of their arm to be different, for your ankle to not be fully under your knee and this usually results in more of a struggle before they're forced to tap. Fedor tapped to a triangle with his arm straight, Royce Gracie tapped Dan Severn with a triangle almost exactly the same position as this video. What I'm trying to explain to ngaiflex is that although it's not perfectly applied, it's no less of a triangle.
eat the slam and dont let go. if you have the leg strength and can hold on with just your legs, put your arms out to the side on your way down and make sure your hands are the first point of contact with the ground. this will give spread the impact out over your entire upper body and make it hurt less. also make sure to have your head tucked in so you dont get slammed on your head.
What's a bite to the stomach compared to passing out, brain damage, or death?
my second submission wrestilng class i made my coach pass out cause he wanted to see how my technique was, it is now my favorite choke
@EtherPilot - In the opening segment of this episode they say that "you can force your opponent to tap out using submissions moves of jiu-jitsu that date back to samurai warriors." The producers or writers of this show seem to have some issue with BJJ because they refuse to mention it or even highlight the impact that the Brazilians have had on modern day martial arts. The current popularity and sport of MMA carries a heavy debt to the Gracies, but there is no mention of that on the episode.
The choke is with the inner thigh not the arm the arm is for added pressure and I'm an mma fighter and the triangle choke works every time
This thing hurts like mad, I got caught into one of these when I was trying to pass the guard, I under hooked 1 leg on my arm and as I tries to throw it over my head, didnt quite work, it stop right above the shoulder, then He simply did this and I had to tap, it feels like my head was getting crushed.
If the arm on the outside, hold it thumbs up and elevate the hips for an armbar. This will likely cause a smart opponent to move the arm to avoid the break. When the arm moves, tighten up and pull the head down for the choke.
which you can block by rolling, or slipping the arm threw...there is always weaknesses to any move.
guys do you suggest i shood trie mu thi before i join mma?
