    Storing this food is starting to become a challenge, but I am really hoping I won't have to grow nearly as many tomatoes next year.

    Nice harvest guy's. You have proved in Hickory croft fashion that weeds do not cut down yields that much. I am Shure you will be busy for the next fortnight.

    The tomatoes just got too big for the trellis and everything sort of collapsed. We are definitely planning to try higher trellis next year. We were blessed with an amazing harvest. We have since picked another 60 pounds off my San Marzanos. Thank you so much for watching.

    It definitely pays to know what you need as there is no point growing more and working harder than you need to. I have to say I really admire people who do market gardening as it is so much work. I don't mind working hard for my immediate needs, but I am not sure I would do more.

    Fascinating video..... and what an impressive harvest! I like the way you show the weeds and all - it goes to show you don't have to have a "perfect" garden to have a productive garden. Looking forward to your video on why you like the colored potatoes. I have Red Norlands, but have never done the blue ones. I think what you call Canada Crookneck Squash, we call Neck Pumpkin. At least it looks the same to me. Love the Cushaw Squash too. You guys are so inspiring!

    Those potatoes looks awesome! I got lots of scrubs on mine this year.. Canned a lot of cubed potatoes, potato soup and such of it 🙂 First year I've been able to harvest mature peppers outside though, after a couple seasons making seeds more suited to 63 deg north climate. Only a few, but hopefully their seeds give a good crop next year 🤞

    I was so impressed with these potatoes this year. Really nice size. That is great on the peppers. It is amazing what you can achieve with selection. Similar to our hopes with the potatoes.... select seeds from he ones that meet your needs, and eventually, that is what they all are like. I am sure next year you will have an amazing harvest of peppers.

Also love the squash! You guys did fantastic! Great harvest. Yes now is the hard part...where to put it and get it all processed lol

    I am so close to having to throw in the towel 😆 . The freezers are full and my jar stash is almost gone and there is still a ton of stuff to come in. I am going to have to admit defeat and start feeding stuff to the critters soon. But the hopes are that I will be able to grow less last year... famous last words. It was a funny year as some people's gardens were incredible and some were duds.

    Someone once advised me to wash my garden carrots in the washing machine. It works really well for the itty bitty carrots that I don’t want to scrub. The washer gets them really clean. I have not tried it with potatoes, but it might work. The little potatoes are delicious roasted in the oven with olive oil and rosemary.

    Do you mean a dishwasher? I am guessing so. It would probably work great and the water would be hot.

    @@HickorycroftFarm Actually, I did mean the washing machine, on the cold water setting. I hadn’t thought of the dishwasher, but that might work too. I have a portable dishwasher so I could just use the cold water tap. The advantage of the washing machine is that it really swishes the carrots around nicely.

    Have you thought about using a weed barrier like cardboard or weed cloth?

  • @HickorycroftFarm

    @HickorycroftFarm

    9 ай бұрын

    We did the weed cloth one year, and it wasn't too bad, but eventually, the weeds grew on top of it. We have done the cardboard and mulch and gravel around our raised bed area, and it works great. we are thinking of converting all the ingrown garden to a somewhat raised bed. Meaning that there are edges to the paths, and at least the paths are mulched or gravelly so they do not get the weeds ... it would at least save on some of the work. Hopefully, we can eventually figure out a way to tackle it.

    I love it! Your tomatoes are amazing. Do you have any trouble with squash bugs? I have lost so many plants to the little buggers. I'm on a quest to find a winter squash that is resistant to them.

  • @HickorycroftFarm

    I was out there squishing the squash bugs like crazy this year. But I kept picking off the eggs, and we were victorious. There were still a few here and there but not too terrible. We found the Hubbard type squash were terrible for the bugs they love them. Some farmers even use them as a decoy crop from what I have read. Last year, the bugs attached our Hubbard type.... we didn't get any, so this year, we didn't grow any of that type.

    Dealing with my 2 heads of Sorghum. How do I get the grains off the head? Let dry after cutting from the plant?

  • @HickorycroftFarm

    @HickorycroftFarm

    Sorry for the really slow reply (we are terrible). We have just rubbed the seeds off the seed heads when we only have a few but rubbing them over some finer hardware cloth would work to likely. We let the seed heads dry for a fairly long time usually (just hang them upside down somewhere kind of like drying herbs by hanging the plant) and that seems to work fairly well.
