The conversations in this episode about societal omissions and secrecy surrounding childbirth and having children--as well as the sensitive analysis of how any option you choose will have very vocal critics--was so refreshing. I swear that I could listen to Chelsea and James talk about anything. You are both my heroes.

OMG I talk to my students so much about those gory details. Being pregnant is horrible and time consuming, giving birth is agony, and then you don't sleep for at least five years while your boobs go to shit. ...But you can unplug the TV if bratty kids keep turning the volume up-and shut off the fuse for that room if they are clever little shits jajaja

Pregnancy horror is so interesting, because it’s an intersecting point for so many different fears, such as change, isolation, unmet needs or desires, the unknown, sexual violence, and death… And that’s not even close to comprehensive.

I loved this movie so much. I loved that it acknowledged that pregnancy can be an absolutely miserable experience. My pregnancy was very wanted but I felt so dehumanized with people coming up to me and touching my belly and telling me what to eat and what to watch and listen to and what to wear? Giving birth was really NBD, but pregnancy? No! Anyway, this movie made me feel seen and I cried at the end.

God the being told what I could and couldn't eat by people who didn't actually know what they were talking about just drove me insane. My ILs really got to the point where they were treating my pregnancy as more important than me as a person and it was so dehumanizing.

yes!! I've never had kids, I'm not planning to, and everyone is shocked when I say it's never happening, which I find confusing. it doesn't take long to find multiple diseases and issues pregnancy can bring, ESPECIALLY the mental issues that can be triggered, and even passed down. once I saw videos of being able to see a baby's hand, pushing against the stomach, I knew it wasn't for me.

I feel ur pain friend!! I had super rough pregnancies plus I was legit very sick w my last pregnancy. And I wanna make it very clear that I am all about my kids & very much love my children, but being pregnant was the most horrible experience. I was so uncomfortable & always sick w that super nausea/ vomiting illness ( sorry med name slipping my mind), but had so many ppl telling me what to do but not actually hearing me that I knew something wasn't right as I knew having had 2 other before that the last one was so much worse that I just got so dang angry too. And holy crap if u tell anyone u are angry at urself for getting pregnant especially when u already have kids they act like u are evil. It was awful. Hope all is well w you now.❤💞❤️

I saw the movie as a very stark allegory for postpartum depression/psychosis. The monster creeps closer and closer as her pregnancy progresses before culminating in trying to hurt the baby. At the end, she was trying to face down her demons but she wasn't strong enough to overcome them.

The way my partner and I interpreted it was that Val's fundamentalist Christian family pressured her into pretending not to be a lesbian and are emotionally abusive. The end of it is exorcising that false life and leaving a person who can finally live her life and her truth. We definitely felt like it was a queer movie from the beginning. It was a great pod, and we love Molly's fur cut 😹

Yeah, I think technically James and Chelsea might have had the roles backwards: the "bone woman" who was haunting her was the feeling of loss, and her dislike for her child... and in the end, it was the mother (or the expectations of what she's supposed to be) which was exorcised leaving the version who felt broken, freeing the bone woman to leave the baby with the father and presumably move to the mountains with her girlfriend.

Definitely need to check this movie out, it looks awesome! Watching the podcast, I was struck by the parallels between Val dunking her head playing chicken with her old friends and dunking her head for the exorcism ritual at the end. Val literally holding her breath until she's able to come up for air so often in her life feels especially thematically cool for her character. And I'm personally so tired of this "sympathetic woman" dialogue that's been in art discussions for fucking ever. Even Henrik Ibsen got so much hate for his controversial ending of A Doll's House (tl;dr - housewife leaves husband and children to figure out herself) in 1879 that he wrote a different play exploring what happens to a woman stuck in a wrong marriage her whole life (spoilers - she kinda hates her life) and THAT got panned too! It sure feels like there's no right way to be a woman on this earth!! Chelsea's right, shouldn't the discussion be about the forces that push Val to hold her breath and break her bones? Thank you for the hispanic heritage month representation!! And as a native spanish speaker, it can definitely be funny to hear gringos trying to pronounce spanish but at the end of the day you're still trying! and that means so. much.

Calf cramps are super common in pregnancy! In regard to the symptoms for pregnancy that no one tells you about- I don't think it is purposefully kept a secret. I don't know of anyone who purposefully conceals it or lies about it. More that it just doesn't come up in conversation unless you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant! Like, unless you are seeking those circles the conversation doesn't come up. I don't know a lot about the experience of an athlete with nutrition and work outs and injuries. Or someone's experience with chronic illness or even a severe mental illness! But it's not that people are keeping it from me - just my life experience hasn't overlapped with the those experiences. But when I started trying to become pregnant and with both births/postpartum experiences - I have found women to be very frank about what is hard and what is rewarding. I think too the pregnancy experience varies SO much from person to person, and you don't know what your experience will be like until you are pregnant. Like, you might be glowing and have everything be fabulous! Or you might be barfing for months and be put on bed rest.

I recommend a Korean found footage horror movie called Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum. It has some pretty great scares!

Its sweet seeing them get excited about "5S" ing a workspace! It is penultimate organizing and weirdly satisfying. Like asmr for your work brain

Remember, the H is silent and the U is pronounced like the one in Uber (oo·br). Huesera (oo·eh·seh·ruh)

Fun fact about H's in Spanish. They're silent. Huesera would be pronounced weh-se-ra

Oh god I crack basically everything in my body. I crack my neck which probably isn't the best thing in the world to do. I'm double jointed and things come out of place easier than they really should do. I can dislocate my right shoulder which is a fun party trick I like to pull out.

I really liked the movie, I take it as less horror and more a look into how women (especially in certain cultures) are expected to act and be a certain way. It's a look at how toxic some traditional families can be. Great episode and I was happy to see y'all covering it.
