I absolutely adore the scene where Beni first sees the Mummy, immediately pulls out tons of necklaces and starts reciting prayers from every religion in any language he can remember out of desperation. As I've gotten older I've grown to really love and respect the hustle of villain character who runs away and is a coward.

The eyes thing isn't a plot hole, it's actually part of the plot. The fact that the guy's eyesight is so bad is why the Mummy mistakes Evelyn for Anck-su-namun. One of the more clever little aspects of the movie if you ask me.

*Fun fact:* Brendan wasn’t fighting any stuntmen during the end battle. He was told to just swing at the air and imagine mummies attacking him. He’s just such a good actor that he could convincingly fake the impact of the sword.

54:18 the movie actually explains that! Imhotep flees when he see the cat, then Evie's boss explain that "cats are the guardians of the underworld" and in another scene O'Conell grabs the cat and says "LOOK WHAT I GOT!" to scare Imhotep away

And Evie's boss mentions "until he's fully restored" or something similar so they don't get the chance to use that tactic again once he's fully juiced up. It's a neat little moment and it's logically explained so they have reason not to just overuse the tactic.

One thing that is not specifically said in the movies but is likely to be true is that Johnatan is WWI veteran who suffers from PTSD or Shellshock as they called it back then. It would explain his behaviour and marksman skills. Clearest indication of it is the very first line he says: "Sometimes I'd rather like to join them (the dead)". When you watch the movies with this in mind you'll see his character in very different light.

Chelsea; the actor who plays the Nubian in the 1932 film is Noble Johnson. He’s a pretty interesting guy. Johnson started his own production company in the silent era that primarily made films for African American audiences. He also happened to be buddies with Lon Chaney Sr. He also played the native chief in the og King Kong. He was made-up to have a darker skin tone than his own for his role in The Mummy but he was African American himself.

I remember Evie being one of the first proper Action heroine I’ve looked up to back in the days. A pretty great example of a strong female character! She has class and elegance. Yet her knowledge shines through as power. Of course in the first movie she was more of a Damsel in distress type, so she was to be underestimated. A bookworm taken out of the library, and thrown into a world of exploration and adventure. But her strength and drive REALLY shined through in the second movie. I loved the warrior aspect of her, and how she ended up fighting for her life (literally) and for her family in one way. She learned to be a badass mother! She serves as inspiration to one of my own original characters for a story I’m trying to make, so that says something!

A popular theory about Jonathan is that he was a soldier in World War 1, based on the "I've had worse odds" interaction and his introduction of "Have you no respect for the dead?" "Of course I do, but sometimes I'd rather join them" Jonathan is a deeper character than you think. I'm also sorry if I spam this video with comments throughout my viewing, this is one of my favorite movies.

James, iirc, it's explained by Ardeth that cats are guardians of the underworld and that is why Imhotep fears them. However, as his power grows and he becomes more whole, the cat would no longer work. That's why the cat isn't mentioned much after the hotel scene.

The scene where Evie is on the ladder, the domino effect was one take. It's great. Of course, there was a stunt man who did the topple (and the far shots of her on the ladder). So, it was, "Action!", stunt man falls and slides down the ladder, camera rotates while the stuntman and Rachel switch out, Rachel rises as the camera goes back to the first position. They had one shot, and they got it. Always impressed by that. Edited to say: Brendan was pretty much hanged, yes. For the wide shots, they had a stuntman on a harness, but they did close-ups of Brendan on an apple box. The first take, there was light tension, and Stephen Sommers wasn't impressed by Brendan's fake choking. So, the stuntman in charge of the rope was told he needed to increase the tension. This forced Brendan onto the balls of his feet, and he wasn't doing well trying to stand on his tiptoes. So, the rope really did choke him out. If they had waited much longer to cut, who knows what could've happened.

I always like the trope of the hero still trying to help the bad guy like Rick trying to help Benny get out even after everything he’s done. Reminds me that part in Tarzan when he tries to save Clayton from hanging himself this is a good way to show a hero is legitimately a good person.

I JUST rewatched this at an Alamo Drafthouse (highly recommend if you have one near you). It was a rowdy showing which means you can yell, whistle, and quote all you like. We got amulet trinkets, a bumper sticker and temporary tattoos. A mummy wrapping contest before it started and a host to enlighten the audience members of all the barriers it broke and how important it was a trendsetter 2000s mainstream pop culture. Also the VFX went HARD for no reason on this random ass mummy movie. LOVE to see this covered on the podcast, so excited to hear y'all discuss it and me say "I KNOW RIGHT!" like I'm in the room with y'all. Bless.

This and Mummy Returns are definitely comfort films for me. I have watched both thousands of times. Putting them on to watch or as background noise or to sleep to. Evelyn is one of the greatest female characters. Especially when she is super badass in the second movie.

The Nubian in the 1932 film was played by Noble Johnson (Aka Mark Noble) who was a black american actor. Nubians are actually north-african so well casted for a movie in that time! 😊

I love this movie. I did when I was 10 and still do. And the second one. The third one was not good. And they didn't do anything to make Brendan Fraser look older. He and the guy who played adult Alex looked more like brothers than father and son. I'm glad to see it getting covered here. Yes, Brendan was really being hanged in that scene. On accident. But he passed out and had to be revived on set. I hope you guys are doing ok ❤️

The mummy has been my favorite movie since I was a tiny tiny kid like less than 4 lol. My mom told me stories about me and my sis just laughing watching this and constantly wanting to watch it. She said she had to hide the tape at one point cuz she was so sick of watching it 😂. Benny of course was a favorite as a kid but as I've grown older I enjoy every character just as much. Literally everyone in this movie is crush worthy ❤. I love that yall are covering this!

You guys talking about the Paranormal Pool Party reminded me of how much I looked forward to and appreciated those episodes. I had a shit job at the time that was steadily making me beyond depressed, and the summer you guys did those episodes was the summer before I ditched that nightmare later that September. The Pool Party kept me sane during a crap time so I just want to give my thanks 😊 Great episode as always!

42:44 - oh.... so you didn't pick up on the EXTRA subtle bit... the reason why Imhotep mistakes Evie for a resurrected version of his old flame is because... he took the eyes of the American who needed glasses! The mummy had bad eyesight for a reason! Edit: Also, the plague of frogs COULD have happened... If you look at the original Hebrew translation, the plague refers to ONE frog. So if you see one frog in the movie, that was it!

Honestly, even though some elements and characters are a little dated, _The Mummy (1999)_ is one of those films I'd comfortably call a "perfect movie." It sets out to be a fun story that mixes action, horror and humor, and it pretty excels on all fronts. The pacing is perfect. The tone is just right. The performances are wonderful. And it's almost endlessly rewatchable. I saw it in theaters when I was eleven years old and I've owned it in every medium since, from VHS to 4K-UHD. And I've probably seen it 50 times over the last 24 years. I know his work splits people, but I always really loved Stephen Sommers' films in general. _Mummy, Mummy Returns, Deep Rising, Van Helsing, Jungle Book, Odd Thomas..._ he one of the few directors who seemed to love to just make consistently fun movies, and even his weaker films usually had great visuals and good action. His movies felt like you were watching a cute kid playing with action figures and making up silly stories to go along with the action. Shame he hasn't done anything in about 10 years.

Very fun episode! I think you both will be thrilled and surprised to find out how much of this movie is actually practical and miniatures. Corridor has a FANTASTIC video with the ILM art director who did The Mummy, and he shares a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes stuff. For instance, Brendan Frasier is shadow fighting the zombie-mummy-enemies with the sword. There were no stand-ins and he was holding a sword 😮

I just wanted to say one thing outside of loved this overall. The warden character is actually played by a comedian who is very well known for playing up how he is in this movie. He even had his own variety show for a while where he'd do things like pause the show to do a "belly dance", and *really* play up the accent. So if anything, you can blame the actor for that persona more than the movie.
